Samsung Harddrive problem

Recommended Posts

My computer started making a strange clicking noise the other night and I took my PC apart to find the samsung harddrive I have was making the noise. Turned the computer back on and the bios was taking ages to find the hard drives, when it finally found them it took ages for the computer to boot up but it never got to the Vista log in screen. I have disconnect the drive and computer is running fine.

I have loads of bits stored on that drive is there anyway I can get the stuff of the drive? as I cant seem to access the drive on my computer.

Strange clicking noises are usually a very bad sign with HDDs, in fact it tends to mean impending doom, so yeah, you do want to find a way to back up that data ASAP. You could try booting the drive after you've opened windows using a USB adapter - or maybe run ubuntu from a CD with the HDD in - if you get into an OS with the HDD running you might find you can still access some of the files - but I wouldn't get my hopes up with that.

Unfortunately chances are it's dead, I have heard a few people say putting it in the freezer can resolve one of the possible motor issues, but I've not seen many success stories on that front.

Professionals might be able to do it, at a hefty cost. You could ring samsung and ask them to fix it since it's in warranty. Be aware that any tech specialist will absolutely definitely browse through all your files looking for anything interesting.

You got the HDD's click of death (check it up on wikipedia if you must).

Follow what Shorty said. Another option is getting a spare disk and boot from there to try and access your data, but if the board can't handle it then Windows will never find the disk.

That's why people should back up. All disks nowadays have S.M.A.R.T, but sometimes they just die without warning.

I think I will try the usb plug, The hard drive is the slave drive in my pc, its just there is lots of my pics on there that I would like back and few other bits. nothing bad is on there so I havent gotta worry about becoming another gary glitter! Think I will invest in a bigger master hard drive and then get a external drive to back it up on when I want.
