Church Sign Kissed a Girl

Recommended Posts

Mixed feelings. That's the best way to describe how people feel about a controversial church sign that was seen in Blacklick this past week.

For 24 hours, the message board outside Havens Corners Church, 6696 Havens Corner Rd., read, "I kissed a girl and I liked it, then I went to Hell."

The message refers to the chart-topping song by pop artist Katy Perry "I Kissed A Girl."

Pastor David Allison said he didn't put up the sign to draw attention to the church.

"We didn't intend to get into all this, but it's become a bigger thing," Allison said.

He was just very concerned about the implications of the song for teenagers and what he called a music video so suggestive it borders on pornography.

"If anyone's seen the video and understands how lewd and suggestive the video is for this song, that is not something young people should go toward," Allison said.

He thought the message would be a loving way to remind teenagers that the Bible denounces homosexuality, NBC 4's Mikaela Hunt reported.

Taking a look at the other side of this story, some people can't believe the church displayed that message so publically.

A viewer sent us a picture of the sign with the subject title "Worst Church Sign Ever."

The sign was removed Thursday.

Pastor Allison said it was not due to outrage. He said he received volumes of support from throughout the state.

Instead, he said, it was confusing to many people who called in or e-mailed because they didn't know to what he was referring. They were unaware of the song.

Hunt spoke with Equality Ohio Thursday, and they said their "jaw dropped" when they saw a picture of the sign.

"It was a little jaw-dropping. But it happens and we want people to know there are more than 300 welcoming and affirming churches across Ohio," said Kim Welter, of Equality Ohio.

They maintain while the church is free to air their opinion on a reader board, members of the gay, lesbian and transgender community will find more than 300 welcoming churches throughout Ohio. Allison said they do welcome the GLBT community but believe they are engaged in sin.

...and this is why I don't bother going to church. I read about this a few days ago, and laughed so hard. It's utterly ridiculous.

lols. But then also, kinda facepalm.

And theres more pornographic videos aimed towards teenagers. 'Dirrty' comes to mind straight away.

Those crazy church folks eh? I prefer the type that are far more accepting. Like my friend whose a devout Christian but asked me to be her daughter's godfather. Times they are a changing. I understand, traditional views and all that but...I think im rambling.

Also, surely that sign is advertising homosexuality anyway? A guy sees it, thinks he can't kiss a girl and so goes and kisses a guy. I know it wouldn't happen, but you see my point?

It has to be said, the news story that the thread title conjured in my head was better.

Anyway, that sign offends me. Is it really so hard to track down one measly comma card?

I'd love top know what he was really trying to achieve with this stunt. People like this make 'Christian love' seem like an oxymoron.

To be honest I think most Christians with their sanity intact, think this guy is being a stupid Nazi too.

Perhaps I should point out before this turns into a hate thread, that not all christians are homophobes. In my opinion, no religion is about hate, so how can anyone call themselves religious if they hate homosexuals?

Agreed, they can't. But it does annoy me how even though some aren't exactly Homophobic, that they do still believe it's a so called "sin". But anyway, getting back on topic - the guy that came up with this sign has to be the single most dumbest person alive. How did he think it would help?

Doesn't see a lot of music videos, does he?

Just another bigot hiding behind his invisible protector, also a bigot.

Some people just believe homosexuality is wrong. Its just how they were brought up. I'm not defending him. I think the sign is wrong in so many ways, I'm just trying to explain it from his point of view. So rather than calling him the dumbest person alive, it perhaps would be better to call him the most misinformed person alive.

But though he says he didn't know it would cause such a stir, he obviously did. He's heard of the song, therefore he would of known just how popular it was. Thats why I called him "Dumb" - there's no way he was "mis-informed".

What the Bible sounds like in parts:

That's a pretty good summery of the old testament.

Some people just believe homosexuality is wrong. Its just how they were brought up.

Their belief is based on nothing, therefore they stupid, ignorant, or suffering for psychosis.

Oh, and what is it with this forum and religion at the moment?

maybe - JUST MAYBE - y'all have jumped the gun a little bit on the gay pride march...? from what i can tell the guy's made no objections to homosexuality but rather the gross over-sexualization of a music video aimed at young teenagers...? plus from listening to the song - which i don't like at all O_o - it sounds like it's promoting promiscuity MUCH more than it glorifies lesbianism.

maaaaaaaaaaaybe he is/should be disagreeing with that?

.....cant we have that discussion instead.......? :heh:

and yes, dante, i was a christian ~ just like i stated in the post that you quoted. thanks for clearing that up for everyone... =___=

Same here! :D

I was disappointed when I read what the news story was not nearly as interesting as an actual church sign making advances. :p

Usually I come into threads like this and am the lone christian voice defending various stuff.

But wow just wow I have to admit my first reaction was to laugh out loud a lot. I have a catholic friend who loves this song shes gonna love this so much hahaha.

I think what was said, jokingly, is that the sign promotes homosexuality because it claims that kissing a girl gets you a place in hell. Which sparked discussion of people like this.
