But what if you want it wireless? Thats another £50, and the arcade doesn't really give the the disk space for much more than game saves!

PS3 is WAY better value for money than the PS3!! Taking evertything into account. If you don't want all that, fair enough; but for what you get, I don't think you can complain!

Pachter says HDTV sales are the main cause of PS3 sales.

Slow sales of high-definition television hardware in the US is holding back sales of Sony's PlayStation 3, as consumers feel the effects of the economic slowdown.

That's according to analyst Michael Pachter, who also said that consumers had been opting for cheaper Xbox 360 console deals, rather than the more expensive PlayStation 3 offerings.

"There was likely some substitution of Xbox 360 for PS3 purchases, due to recent price reductions for the Xbox 360 and the bundling of the console with two free games," said the Wedbush Morgan specialist.

"In addition, we believe that PS3 sales are being impacted by lower demand for HD televisions as a result of the recession."

Sales of the PlayStation 3 during November were 6.1 million units, compared to 12.4 million Xbox 360 consoles.

However, Pachter believes that during the first half of 2009, sales for Sony will begin to look up as consumers show interest in exclusive titles and Blu-ray capabilities.

"We believe that several PS3 exclusives, notably LittleBigPlanet, along with focus on the Blu-ray will drive hardware sales over the next six months," he said.

He also added that he expects December sales for the entire hardware market in the US to show further improvement over last year.

"We do not expect the recession to impact videogames in December; rather, we think that as Nintendo increases Wii supply further, Sony markets Blu-ray, and Microsoft rolls out its New Xbox Experience, hardware sales will show year-over-year increases in December."

I think with the "PS3 being a good value" thing, you really also need to consider the recession. If you consider the price of the 360 compared to the PS3, and you also consider that a lot of the best games are on both consoles, a lot of people would rather pay less and get a 360. The main point behind the PS3 originally to boost Blu-Ray sales. Not the other way around. The average consumer doesn't care about all the bells and whistles on the PS3.

LBP outsold Gears of War 2 and COD5 on PS3 the past week in the UK. Will it take PS3 no.1 for christmas?

The console is the only one of the three home consoles to have performed less well this November than it did last November - it's sinking ship.

Wii is the wii(amazing) but 360's increase of 7% yoy is not healthy given there was price cut( second as well) since last year. Not only that but its cheaper than the Wii, DS and PSP(+PS2 with bundles). What does that really say?

the "It's a blu ray player!" reason is now a moot point with stand alone players getting much cheaper.

You get far more out of the PS3 for video(and pictures, music than a 'standalone' Blu Ray player. If anything it makes PS3 look good and hopefully people learn more about the multimedia aspects and Blu Ray. The PS3 is stillt he Blu Ray standard bearer and does much more than just Blu Ray or Internet browsing/downloading, streaming from cameras, phones etc. all in a polished package.

Especially as people consume media in more and more different ways.

The average consumer doesn't care about all the bells and whistles on the PS3.

Why should everyone just be 'average'? :indeed:

The average consumer doesnt even care about games and Wii is most accessible to those. The average 360 owner does not have a HDTV or play online.

PS3 is different, bold and even insane in some ways. So some of us will ofcourse cherish that(much like car enthusiasts cherish loss making Bugatti Veyron). Some bad sales are hardly going to take away what PS3 has given this generation already. If Sony can make this profitable then I hope they can somewhat continue the idea of PS3 next time rather than copying the Wii.

I'm so glad Choze is picking up steam again. Thank you I thought PS3 was just a Blu Raay player now I am wiser and know PS3 is bold... and insane!

Choze is a bit like the orchestra on the Titanic; playing a nice tune - but, at the end of the day, going down with the ship!

LBP may have outsold Gears 2 for a week or something pathetic, in one territory - lets look at the actual overall sales: LBP: 1.1m, Gears 2: 3.2m. So you're looking at Gears 2 outselling LBP nearly 3 to 1!

You can say the 360 has only had a 7% increase in sales, but it's an increase - where as PS3 sales have decreased. Price drop or no price drop, MS still sold more consoles than they did last year showing their system has gained momentum this year, unlike the PS3 which has lost momentum despite all these 'killer titles' we keep hearing about.

Wow, the PS3 does all these things with pictures, and cameras and music - why? My PC does all that too, and with a mouse and a monitor and not through my TV!

Well, all I can say is, you go and be 'special', with your 'special' PS3, that is bold and fun and wonderful. So bold and wonderful that SCE have made a 1.25 billion dollar loss and cut shed loads of staff. A loss like that = EPIC fail!

…with Nintendo as top dog, I think it’s time for publishers to throw it a much bigger bone by leading development on Wii, then up-porting the games to the more powerful systems, which should result in a larger addressable audience. - N’Gai Croal

I certainly didn't expect Croal to say this oO

I absolutely love how most people on the internet make it an undeniable fact that Wii has very little good games. It's really fun, I love the "Wii with dust meme" too.

Not getting in this, just one thing jammy, PS3 selling good for the price point, means nothing at all, they're in the red, they need to do something about it. Maybe, and I really mean maybe, cutting the price would increase the sales so much they would make more money or at least lose less, specially since the "It's a blu ray player!" reason is now a moot point with stand alone players getting much cheaper. Sony can't use it's "selling OK for the price" as an excuse for anything. But like I said when PS3 was announced, Sony backed themselves into a wall with PS3, so asides from occasional spikes there's not much they can do.

i'd say very little excellent or killer app games. You could list the games people will remember or classics..but the situation on ps3 is technically worse but helped by the fact it shares a lot of 360 games..That's why it appears better.

on ps3.. i'd say they shot themselves in the foot by not lowering the price(right?).. I also can't see many games helping the sales bar little big planet.. Ps3 IS NEVER making a comeback in my opinion it's mistake after mistake.

Most games that are considered excellent or killer apps on other consoles I don't find that excellent. Hardly any classics for me that's for sure. Most of them are more of the same and overrated.

I hate this mentality that games need to be "AAA" and have high review scores to be worth it. It's up to taste if a console has more good games or not, but then we always have people going "lol you listed stupid games because x has waggle, y is casual, z sucks, b has better online on 360, c has bad graphics and I prefer w, therefore those games are objectively bad". I don't care if a game has an average of 9+ reviews, high production values or is a big brand, if I enjoy it it's already good, if I really really enjoy it, it's excellent.

Why should I care (or even know for that matter) what games will be remembered? A lot of games are remembered because they're hugely marketed and are basically a big brand.

Hope fades for PS3 as a comeback player

MK-AT648_SONY_NS_20081228215134.gif

For most of this year, Sony Corp.'s PlayStation 3 videogame console seemed finally to be taking off after a slow start. The PS3, trailing Nintendo Co.'s Wii and Microsoft Corp.'s Xbox 360 consoles, was closing in on the No. 2 Xbox 360, with new games and quarterly sales growth at twice the speed of last year.

But early results from this holiday season aren't promising. U.S. sales of the PS3 fell 19% last month from a year earlier, while sales doubled for the Wii console and rose 8% for the Xbox 360, according to research firm NPD. Analysts say they expect PS3 sales for this month to be flat or lower than last year, while sales for its rivals are likely to rise. And Sony may not reach its goal of selling 10 million PS3 consoles in the fiscal year through March, analysts say.

The sales decline is a heavy blow to Sony, which was banking on the videogame division to provide a bright spot as its core electronics business is hit by the global economic downturn. Sony in May forecast that its games division would turn a profit this fiscal year after two years of losses since launching the PS3 in 2006. Meanwhile, poor sales of television sets and digital cameras are forcing the company to lay off thousands of staff and close factories.

Sony's strategy of selling a pricey game machine with advanced features and cutting-edge components appears to be backfiring as a deepening recession has U.S. consumers more price sensitive than ever.

If Sony doesn't close the gap with its rivals, it could risk making the PS3 an afterthought to game publishers, who focus most of their resources on the machines with the most users. At the end of September, the Wii had a wide lead with nearly 35 million units sold since its launch in 2006 compared with about 22 million Xbox 360 consoles and 17 million PS3 machines. Nintendo last month sold 2 million Wii machines in the U.S., while Microsoft sold 836,000 Xbox 360s and Sony sold 378,000 PS3s, according to NPD.

Sony said earlier this month that it was happy with the "strong momentum" of the PS3 and focused on the machine's 60% rise in the year-to-date sales. A spokesman at Sony's game division declined to comment further, saying it is working hard to close the quarter strong.

A key factor behind the decline in sales may be the PS3's high price. At $399, the entry-level PS3 model costs at least $150 more than the Wii or the least expensive Xbox 360. Sony emphasizes that the PS3 comes with a Blu-ray high-definition video player and an 80-gigabyte hard drive, features not available with the Wii or Xbox 360.

Microsoft cut Xbox 360 prices in early September and started bundling games with the most basic console for $199. Nintendo has maintained the Wii's initial $249 price, but sales are rising now that it has overcome an early supply shortage.

Part of Sony's strategy hinged on selling the PS3 as a relatively inexpensive Blu-ray player. But prices of Blu-ray players have fallen so sharply recently -- new players are available for less than $200 -- that it's possible to buy a Blu-ray player and an Xbox 360 for less than a PS3. Meanwhile, the economic downturn has cooled sales of flat-screen TV sets and Blu-ray players this holiday season.

Industry watchers say they were surprised Sony didn't cut PS3 prices to boost sales before the holidays. One reason may be Sony Chief Executive Howard Stringer's commitment to making the games division profitable after heavy investment in the PS3 machine. Console makers hope to eventually recoup development investment with game sales and production cost reductions. Sony is still losing money on every PS3 it sells at $399, so a price cut could push the games division back into the red, analysts say.

"With Stringer saying, 'We will be profitable,' you can't cut price," says Michael Pachter, a research analyst at Wedbush Morgan Securities in Los Angeles. He expects Sony to cut prices at the start of its new fiscal year in April, which could help boost sales.

Sony also is suffering from a lack of attractive titles that are exclusive to the PS3. Microsoft has hit the jackpot with two action-adventure game franchises, Halo and Gears of War, which are available only on the Xbox 360. Most of Nintendo's top games are made in house and playable only on the Wii.

Sony used to have a stable of exclusive games. But in recent years, Microsoft has persuaded most game publishers to release highly anticipated games to it and Sony at the same time.

Last month, four of the five best-selling U.S. games were exclusive to either the Wii or Xbox 360, according to NPD. Sony's best-selling game during the month was an action shooter game, Call of Duty: World at War from Activision Blizzard Inc. But twice as many people bought the Xbox 360 version.

Wedbush Morgan’s Michael Pachter has told videogaming247.com that he expects Christmas sales for Nintendo Wii to be “up more than 100%†whereas he anticipates only a slight rise in 360 sales and a possible drop in PlayStation 3 numbers.

“I haven’t done the work for NPD yet, but my guess is that 360 sales were flat or up a little, PS3 sales down a little, and Wii sales up more than 100%,†said Pachter.

“That would end up around 1.2 - 1.3 million 360s, around 700,000 PS3s and around 3 million (or more) Wiis.â€

Pachter went on to say that his official estimates would be released early next week.

December’s NPD figures will be released on January 15.

Amazing if it turns out to be true.

Was that a new article? It took them about 12 months longer then even the dumbest of people that Sony's comeback hopes are over.

IT's all turning a bit stale at the moment, will be interesting to see what results from all this speculation of Sony shutting down various departments and whatnot. Can only see minor effecs on SCE but it's bound to keep the PS3's price well above the competition for a while still.

The funny thing is all the people who have been predicting this comeback by SONY! The PS3 actually sold worse this Christmas than it did in 2007! hahaha
