Doesn't bother me, it's gonna have the best games for me whether they sell more systems or not.

 

Also at the Giutar Hero vs Rock Band thing, wasn't Rock Band 2 like staggered releases because Microsoft paid for timed-exlucisve? I'm sure EA made plenty of money off of giving Microsoft an advantage.

I disagree, the Wii has the best line up this year, other than Halo Recon and Killzone 2 there's nothing on the other systems that interests me.

Fair enough, although I find it hard to believe they're the only games you can possibly be looking forward to on the other systems.

Yeah 2009 is going to be a massive year once again for the 360 i feel. Alan Wake, Splinter Cell, Bioshock 2, Resi 5, New CoD and SFIV. Hmmm.

To be fair I forgot Resi 5, that does look awesome. SFIV looks intriguing too. Although I prefered the look of SF2HD tbh.

Overall Sales in United States and United Kingdom Continue to Climb While Japanese Market Experiences Annual Decline

NEW YORK, TOKYO, LONDON, February 2, 2009 – According to recent findings from Top Global Markets, an integrated monthly report from leading providers of consumer and retail information in the video games industry, The NPD Group, GfK Chart-Track Limited and Enterbrain, Inc., combined video game software unit sales across the world’s three largest games markets experienced growth of 11 percent in calendar year 2008 (Jan.-Dec.), totaling 409.9 million units versus the 367.7 million units sold across these markets in 2007.

 

 

The increase in growth comes from both United States and UK, with respective increases of 15 percent and 26 percent. Japan did not fare as well, experiencing a 13 percent decline in 2008, which can largely be attributed to a decline in portable software, followed by console software.

 

While Japan’s overall gaming software market in 2008 declined, it wasn’t due to poor sales on any current-generation hardware platform. Instead, the decline in Japan was driven by the shrinking PlayStation 2 software market, which experienced a 46 percent decrease in 2008 based on units. According to Enterbrain, Inc., sales for Nintendo DS’ Touch Generation software series was also slightly down in 2008.

 

Looking at the Japanese video game software market by console platform, each system (Sony’s PlayStation 3, Nintendo’s Wii, and Microsoft’s Xbox 360) experienced positive year-over-year growth.

 

“Looking ahead to 2009, a string of star titles are lined up to hit the market, including DS's Dragon Quest IX: Hoshizora no Mamoribito,” said Ricky K Tanimoto, Global Marketing Analyst, Enterbrain, Inc. “There are also big console titles scheduled for release in 2009, such as Monster Hunter 3 and Final Fantasy XIII -- leading us to anticipate the console software market will fuel sales of this year’s gaming market.”

 

The United Kingdom experienced the largest aggregate growth as well as category growth, with console software experiencing a 38 percent gain, and portable software increasing 6 percent. Growth in the United States saw console software growth of 22 percent and portable software growth of 2 percent.

 

“There are some incredible statistics within the Top Global Markets Report that highlight the differences between the three major markets in the world,” said Dorian Bloch, Business Group Director, GfK Chart-Track Limited. “In fact, UK console videogame software units are more than double what was achieved in 2003, which just shows how fast the UK market has been growing. Because of this amazing growth and coupled with the downtown currently being experienced in Japan, the UK market has for the first time overtaken Japan as the No2 world market. Although still behind on revenue, the gap has narrowed considerably and it will be interesting to see how things develop during 2009.”

unit sales in the U.S. also saw an increase of 15 percent over 2007, selling over 268.4 million units for the year; nearly 36 million more units than last year,” said Anita Frazier, industry analyst, The NPD Group. “Only two months in 2008 saw a decline in unit sales in the U.S., with one due in large part to the release of 360 Halo 3 in Sept’07 and the other due to an additional week in the Jan’07 retail calendar.”

IGN: Late this month Capcom will deliver Dead Rising: Chop Til You Drop, the Wii version of the 2006 zombie fest. In preparation for this significant release, we thought it might be a good time to take a look at some of Capcom's other major Wii releases and see how they performed at retail. We often receive requests from readers asking how many copies of their favorite games have been sold, and Zack & Wiki is one favorite we still hear about often. Other notable Capcom Wii releases include Resident Evil 4, Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles, and Okami.

 

So, how have these games sold? Here are the life-to-date sales numbers for the U.S. These numbers come by way of NPD.

 

Resident Evil 4 -- 759,000 units sold

Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles -- 398,800

Okami -- 165,900

Zack & Wiki -- 116,600

 

Considering Resident Evil 4 was a remake of a game that was already available for Wii (since the system plays GameCube discs), almost 800,000 copies is a mighty impressive number. Much more disappointing are the lackluster sales of both Okami and Zack & Wiki. IGN readers are always asking if they'll see a sequel to Z&W, but that number makes it seem unlikely. RE4, Okami, and Z&W all received a 9 from IGN, and Umbrella Chronicles received a very respectable 7.9.

 

It will be interesting to see how Dead Rising: Chop Til You Drop performs on Wii. Capcom also has a new IP on the way with Spyborgs, but after announcing the game last year the publisher hasn't revealed any new information.

Well, that's just the US, hopefully it sold a bit more worldwide.

 

250k worldwide, as some guy from CAPCOM mentioned a week or so ago.

 

Bear in mind though the game was very quickly reduced to $40 in America and then the price went down again very quickly. Most of the games sales unfortunately brought in very little money.

A bit bellow average then, sad as it is a good game but expected. It was never a game that would reach a million and it was a fast (even if good) response by Capcom to the Wii's success.

It didn't break even though that's the point lol. There's a quote from a CAPCOM guy (might be in the Dead Rising thread) where he says that it didn't. Infact he actually said it costs a lot of money to make, strangely enough. Remember, it sold 250k worldwide but most of those sales were at a reduced price (amazon had a lot of offers around the $20 and $30 marks quite soon). It never made enough money to cover its costs unfortunately.

But don't retailers set their own prices? Surely by the time Capcom have sold their stock onto retailers, their money has been made? Ergo, the price has no impact on profit. Am I wrong?

Yes. Usually the publisher will still own the stock and the stores will pay for it when they sell it.

True but because the games were mainly sold at reduced prices, shops became reluctant to ask for more stock. Stock that was brought in, well they paid less for it because they knew it wouldn't sell otherwise.

 

Argh it's a shame aswell because Z&W rocks, got some great reviews and IGN pushed it damn hard too.

Of course CAPCOM's PR dude would say something like that to blame this on someone else, he's an asshole for trying to make gamers buy his shitty excuse of a game with guilt. Zack and Wiki would never be a big seller and Dead Rising Wii is a shitty port for quick cash in.

Capcom on sales of Okami, Zack & Wiki.

 

“It [Zack & Wiki] did not sell 500K units or anywhere near it. To the best of my knowledge, the 300K figure quoted by IR included European orders from Nintendo who published the title on our behalf in that territory. Nor did it do the volume it did do at anywhere near frontline pricing (in the US anyway). And what you think was a cheap game to make, wasn’t. Great games almost never are. Lastly, Okami Wii is not on track to outsell the PS2 version. The worldwide Okami Wii number might get to the US Okami PS2 number at some point though…

 

I will say that the Japan VG chart number appears to be pulled straight from Media Create… which is fairly accurate. Japan’s $2M TV campaign for the title in just that territory (e.g. better marketing) did not move the bar. We could have spent more, sold more, but due to that increased spending generated less profit (more loss). Look at publicly listed publisher financials. Industry standard is a variable marketing spend of between 9-12% of forecasted gross sales. We spend at similar levels (and sometimes above that) on every title we do, in every territory we operate in, including on Z&W…

 

Okami has been moderately successful… due in no small part to the quality of the game and the fact that it was cost effectively produced with managed scope.” - Christian Svensson, Corporate Officer/VP of Strategic Planning & Business Development.

I just read something similar to that on Hide and Geek.

It's not really anything new to what you posted, but it kinda elaborates a bit more on it, it's worth a read.

 

It really is a shame to see Zack and Wiki flop so hard.
