Sonic and the Black Knight

All of Secret Rings' controls get a bit better the more upgrades, etc you get. I enjoyed the game thoroughly and liked how much depth there is but I do understand why it got so much hate.

Anyway I liked the videos, it seems fun looking to me. It is obviously on a set path again though but you can noticibly stop and walk around and what not with the Analogue stick so there's none of that ridiculous tilting backwards to reverse nonsense Secret Rings had, which is very likely its biggest defining flaw.

Like the comments about the visuals and music too! Great to here they put in some effort in both those areas. I remember hearing some famous composers from retro Sega games were working on the OST.

I'm probably buying this now anyway! I enjoyed Rings enough to warrant my purchase and this looks better in most departments so I'm guessing I'll like it quite a lot.

well I must admit with secret rings I didn't give it enough of a chance but you can't deny that the game starts off horribly.. the tutorials just keep going..

Eventually you get to a point where you start off with great acceleration and are speeding along really quickly right away, you're able to "cancel" a jump in mid air and launch down to the ground while keeping your momentum completely, your turning is far, far smoother than the beginning and you can do backflips and what not to make "reversing" a lot easier.

If it had started off controlling like this I'm sure most people would have far more positive impressions of the whole experience but it was just their idea of giving you incentive to improve and level up. Ended up having negative effect though.

Before Galaxy came out Secret Rings probably had the single most visually impressive moment on the Wii for me too.

EDIT: Random example of how much "flow" you can play the game with when good at it.

Don't get me wrong, I saw so much potential in The Secret Rings - it was just the jumping which was never responsive enough. You moved so fast through lovely levels and everything was sweet - then you had to tap jump and there was a delay - then you wanted a big jump and you had to hold jump down which caused you to skid to a halt before you jumped.

That broke the momentum and the lack of fast and responsive controls stopped the flow.

It did however sell VERY well indeed. I fact it sold 2.12 million copies - making it a major earner for SEGA. Also when you add the fact that the Wii version of Sonic Unleashed sold more copies on the Wii than on the 360 of the PS3 I wouldn't be surprised if SEGA put more Sonic our way.

Also the biggest selling game to feature Sonic is Mario and Sonic at the Olympics!

^ unfortunately, yes the cat is Blaze. Personally, I think they should have just left them out of the game. But this is a Sonic Team game so they obviously know what's best

Nice to see some more varied locations.

And Blaze is one of the better new characters.

Yeah but having a small cast of supporting characters is funny..none of the crazies from Sonci Riders, just the essentials.

Loving those screens, Pedro!

Just read this over at GoNintendo.

“Sonic and the Black Knight is aimed at a younger, more casual audience. We’ve changed a lot of things, essentially. It’s thinking as children; approaching things from their point of view, thinking what they want to see. Sonic is kind of a cheeky, edgy character, and so we like seeing Sonic challenge new things all the time. The Wii is a big part of it, because it appeals to a wider range of people who maybe have not played a Sonic game before.†- Sega’s Sonic Team studio in Japan, Tetsu Katano

New trailer:

http://www.gamekyo.com/videofr14534_sonic-and-the-black-knight-une-video-spoilante-et-des-images.html

Although it apparently does contain some spoilers, which is strange as I didn't see anything other than perhaps the characters but then we know about them already. ::shrug: Still, looks good. Whether it plays as well as it looks is beyond me.

I do have a question though, I know controls have been moved to the nunchuk analogue stick but does that mean we have to hold it forward to run or is it still like Secret Rings where you automatically start running forwards and don't need to do anything?

Most likely free roaming, taking aside the gameplay areas that play like unleashed (2.5D)

After all stuff like this:

pretty much screams you can stop just fine along the way.

No, if you've watched any of the in-game gameplay footage it is most certainly on a "set path" like Rings. Like when you hold forward in the analogue stick Sonic will move along that path and you can't turn around, just strafe left and right.

You can stop, I think, but you can't turn around or move left and right in any way other than strafing. Not in the levels anyway, maybe if there's a hub or something I guess? (I forget if there is).

I did see a part in one video though where Sonic was running into a wall until the person jumped, much like Rings.

I'm not really excited about this game. I didn't like Secret Rings mainly because you were always running and the controls were so tricky.

I have to agree that Sonic's transition to 3D is not going all too well. The old school 2D sidescrollers were fantastic, Sonic Rush and Sonic Rush Adventure were also great games... all the 3D ones were weak.

The only one I really liked was Sonic Adventure 2. Sonic Heroes was mediocre. Not horrible but not good neither. The rest IMHO, was plain bad.

I think it would be a blast if they'd make another game like Sonic Adventure 2 or simply, another 2D sidescroller on the Wii. You can bet that would have a lot more success and they would partially regain their credibility. There was a time where I would blindly buy a Sonic game because I knew I'd like it... that time has gone for now.

Calling the original Sonic Adventure a bad game are we?

Well it appears he'll use the sword more than cutting up enemies it seems. mind you it's to be expected I suppose.

To be honest I hate that game with a passion. It's a shining example of a game where people were VERY forgiving of its massive technical flaws at the time because of what it was doing visually and well the overall impact of the product.

Anyone who thinks it's a genuinely good game though that's stood the test of time is blinded by nostalgia I'd say. It's almost unplayable, you need a high level of tolerance to be able to look past the camera issues alone.

I can safely say with completely sincerity I enjoyed titles like Sonic Heroes and Secret Rings a lot more than Sonic Adventure.

Well I actually Played DX on the Gamecube, only came across 2 or 3 really bad glitches which I could pass after a second time going through that part. Some glitches however were pretty cool. I know it's not a technically well done game but I enjoyed everything else.

I also only played SA in it's DX iteration, but I found it quite enjoyable.

People moan about the camera, but I found it fine for the most part. The only time it would be an issue is if you turn around and try going backwards through the level, something you don't generally do anyway - other than that, I have no problems with it.

And I don't think the glitches weren't as plentiful as some like to make out either. I clocked well over hundred hours on that and I can count the times I fell through the floor or caught on something during a para loop on one hand with fingers to spare.

Does anybody know the frame rate on this - is it 30fps like SatSR and SU, or have they been able to hit the magic 60 this time?

Sonic Heroes had a lot more glitches than Sonic Adventure. I never found any major glitches in SA and I never had any major problems with the camera, sure it got stuck behind a wall sometimes, but it never stopped me from enjoying the game.
