NHL 2K9 Announced For Wii

First hockey game with NHL license on console.

by Bill Barnwell

US, June 12, 2008 - 2K Sports announced today that NHL 2K9 will be released on the Wii, representing the first NHL-licensed game to appear on the console.

Users will be able to employ the Wii Remote as a hockey stick within the game, likely in a similar fashion to the skill stick used on 360 and PS3 versions of the game.

"It's our goal this year to bring the fun back to hockey video games," said Christoph Hartmann, president of 2K. "NHL 2K9 for Wii includes the full feature set as available on other platforms, and added Wii Remote controls and other exciting features specific for the Wii console will allow dedicated fans the opportunity to fully enjoy and embrace NHL hockey in a brand new experience."

"Nintendo is thrilled to have 2K Sports' NHL 2K9 on the Wii platform this season," said Steve Singer, VP of Licensing at Nintendo of America Inc. "This title has been highly anticipated by our Wii consumers who will now be able to use the Wii Remote to face-off, play hockey, and fire a slap shot in their living rooms."

To celebrate today's announcement, Nintendo's famed mascot, Mario, will strut his stuff down the red carpet tonight at the 2008 NHL Awards beginning at 6:15 p.m. in Toronto. Fans in attendance will be able to meet Mario and even have their picture taken with him.

Stay tuned to IGN for more details on the Wii version of NHL 2K9 as the game's release date draws closer.

Personally I cannot wait :yay:

Fifa 08's controls would suit this, maybe not perfectly, but they would be very good.

Now that 2K sports have jumped onto the Wii Bandwagon then I wouldn't be surprised if we see a certain game that goes by the name of NHL 09 being announced very soon :heh:

Oh my god, they said they're bringing the full feature set with extras. Never! A developer actually putting the same options for wii as the next gen consoles?

I've always had a soft spot for hockey games, ever since blades of steel; but don't people find you just try and pass and shoot every time? Very tricky to just bomb towards goal and score, quite limiting in attacking options (similar to Mario Football actually)

Simply put , f'ing awesome news.

The lack of recent hockey games on Nintendo consoles has killed me , and to get 2k Sports on board is just fantastic.

Has always been a better less arcadey game than EAs efforts , but there always seems a be a major bug (or used to be) or two that can kill your franchise. Hope that is no longer the case and it will still be great to have this series back.

Now , if only the stupid NFL hadn't extended its exclusitivity deal with EA through to 2013 then we could also have had the prospect of a proper/decent American Football game as well.

Posted in case anyone is interested :heh:

The last NHL game I played was probably NHL 2000 by EA Sports on the PS1 and it was actually really good fun (though I was never entirely sure what I was doing and so scoring felt like a lottery..)

The opportunity for slap stick shooting with the wiimote is ON! Can't wait to see how this turns ou.t.

Is it just me or has Konami's PES2008 really invigorated the way developers look at the Wii 'Sports game' scene?

I agree with tapedeck, Konami has shown every developer that sports games can work on the Wii.

The lack of hockey games on Nintendo platforms recently has been a joke and the last one I played was NHL 2K3 for the GC.

If 2K9 is anywhere near as good as that was I will be happy

is there any information about how the controls work. got to say im looking forward to most sports games more than i have in a long time.

Nothing has been announced yet but normally American Sports games come out around the start of each new season so expect some announcements around E3-time.
