tapedeck Posted May 18, 2008 Posted May 18, 2008 There's obviously a lot of potential involved with game development for the balance board. Just what Wii gaming should be about. BUT.... Now that a lot of gamers have actually played Wii Fit (or 'experienced' it) what would you now like to see the balance board bring to gaming? - Going by your experience of using the board and noting it's strengths / weaknesses. Would it be a good idea to use the board in (primarily) sports games? Infact, does the balance board need a traditional title to make it a must-have piece of kit...Or has Wii Fit already made it a must have accessory? Is the balance board better as an optional extra only housing specific "non-gamer" titles or does it actually deserve the opportunity to house traditional "hardcore" titles? Afterall, it could bring many new experiences. Ideas as ever people!
kiwikid Posted May 19, 2008 Posted May 19, 2008 I have yet to experience using Wii Fit, but from what I can tell it has two pressure sensitve pads on it, one for each foot. Could this mean you could use it for racing games with one pad acting like an accelerator and one pad being the break? It would respond depending on how much pressure you put on it. Thats my two cents.
Emasher Posted May 19, 2008 Posted May 19, 2008 I've never played wii fit, but perhaps movement in FPS type games.
Gizmo Posted May 19, 2008 Posted May 19, 2008 The obvious ones have to be; Monkey Ball Wario Ware/Mario Party 1080/SSX/Tony Hawk As well as those I'd like to see some experimental sequels, like Deweys Adventure, a new Sonic in the style of Secret Rings, just those average, decent Wii games where the idea was right but the control scheme didn't quite work 100%.
darksnowman Posted May 19, 2008 Posted May 19, 2008 I dunno if I want Ten Eighty. Its the obvious choice, but since opening the snowboarding yesterday in WiiFit, I'm not an instant fan. Two other ideas I've had are inspired by the bubble balance game. The first being Micromachines! Don't argue with me on this, if you've played Micromachines and played the bubble game on WiiFit, then you should know it would be a winner. The other idea, is like Gizmo says above- Sonic and the Secret Rings. Also inspired by the bubble game, I had the idea that it could work for Sonic when I leaned back and saw the bubble "reverse," just like how you tilt the remote back to reverse Sonic. Other than that, I would just like it if there was an option in WiiFit where you could do turn based multiplayer or even simultaneous- come on, we all want to be able to line up with our friends and do the step master mini game! And online leader boards in WiiFit would be cool but just amongst friends.
Noku Posted May 19, 2008 Posted May 19, 2008 For Skate It not to suck. Could it somehow be transformed into racer pedals? If so, that would totally kick ass. And I would be like "yeah, this totally kicks ass... too bad we don't have any decent racers..."
welsh_gamer Posted May 19, 2008 Posted May 19, 2008 A Wario Ware game and one of those light gun games you see in arcades, where you have to step on the pedal to take cover and step off to shoot. Also, as most players stand up to play Guitar Hero, it would be nice to see it featured in the game somehow.
ShadowV7 Posted May 19, 2008 Posted May 19, 2008 Snow/Skate Boarding game that isn't tacked on balance board games. Sonic would be interesting that way. It could work aswell.
darkjak Posted May 19, 2008 Posted May 19, 2008 Pilotwings. Imagine it. With the ballance board? Perhaps if you use the board for the rudders, but to control the planes... no thanks.
Fruitgun Posted May 19, 2008 Posted May 19, 2008 I actually think some kind of music game would be pretty cool with it: Imagine playing the drums with the Wiimote + Nunchuk and hitting the.. bass drum? Is it? :P The one where you hit it with your foot.. And the cymbally thing... Hat... something. I think that would be awesome! And cheaper than dumb Rock Band hopefully.
Mr. Bananagrabber Posted May 19, 2008 Posted May 19, 2008 Monkey Ball No, no, no, no! Monkey Ball Jr, DS, and BB all sucked because nothing is as accurate as an analogue stick (and they were all horribly designed). Wario Ware and 1080 would probably work best on the balance board. Maybe an American History X game as well.
darksnowman Posted May 19, 2008 Posted May 19, 2008 Pilotwings. Imagine it. Hang gliding with the balance board could be kind of therapeutic.
D_prOdigy Posted May 19, 2008 Posted May 19, 2008 Grrr, Emasher beat me to the FPS idea. It's fine throwing ingenious ideas about, but I wouldn't get my hopes up. Developers wouldn't make games that revolutionize the genre with the Balance Board, because Board support wasn't standard - it was the offspring of a game, not a console. I think the only Board games we will see in this generation will be similar to Wii Fit and aimed at that crowd. Admitedly, part of that is wishful thinking on my behalf, as I have no plans whatsoever to buy Wii Fit But who knows? Maybe next generation, Nintendo will capitalize on a balance idea.
Tellyn Posted May 19, 2008 Posted May 19, 2008 I don't think they're going to get far with full retail titles that only work at their best with the Balance Board. Downloadable titles would be a lot better.

I agree, the as yet announced games utilising the balance board will work well due to the simplistic party-game nature of the titles. I'm not sure if the balance board is versatile enough to allow developers to delve into the realms of implementation in mature, complex titles yet, ( granted, I haven't tried the board yet and am unaware of the potential of the technology). Also, about the FPS idea: how are you thinking it would be incorporated? In tandem with a 'sticky' cover system to allow you to move in and out? How about mapping the trigger and reload functions to the board? Ok...maybe not. Doesn't it sound like it might be a bit of a clunky addition to the often frenetic nature of FPS shooters?
NotAshley Posted May 19, 2008 Posted May 19, 2008 I think so - by utilising the balance board to act as a cover system in an FPS, for example, the developer would be overcomplicating things.

Well I was thinking a FPS game that focused on a stealth aspect - something we don't see enough of. That way, the Board can sense how gently you're standing on it to incorpoate how you move in the game. And as far as I know, the Balnce Board does have the technology capable of processing when a player is crouching/ducking.

Anyway I'm really interested to see what ideas developers come up with - I hope they don't attempt to shoehorn it into unsutiable games just to capitilise on the sucess of Wii Fit though. I can seriously imagine your idea of pressure-sensitive crouching in conjunction with the Lightgun-esque capabilitites of the Wiimote, making a really intereactive FPS experience. Sounds quite intruiging to me.
david.dakota Posted May 19, 2008 Posted May 19, 2008 Yes, a First Person Stealth. Make it so. A remake of Tetrishere, leaning to revolve the sphere as blocks fall into place.

When fat people step up for a go they'll be alerting guards what with their loud footsteps and all. Then they'll get tired out from all the running and die a slow, painful death. Just like real life!
