Recommended Posts

Woke up on sat morning to find my phone pritty much dosent work any more. SO need to get a new one.

My main priority is to get a phone which will take good pictures when im out clubbing. So must have a flash. And i will be getting it on contract. So any suggestions are welcome.

The Sony Ericsson range are great for photos - especially the k-series. I had a k800i (easy to get on contract) and that was fantastic. The top of the range is now a k850i which you'll need to pay around £25+ per month so get for free. I'm pretty sure it contains the same software for the camera so you shoul dbe pretty sorted.

The phone I have now (Samsung G600) is alright for a camera (very good phone features) but it dogshit at night, of if you want to take a quick photo. The G800 might be better, but I'm not sure. Sony Ericssons are much better for camera quality, and have the best autofocuses and flashes on camera phones.

If you can't afford the k850, you can go inbetween the two for the k810. The camera isn't as good spec, but I have one and... well it takes pretty much perfect pictures so I don't see why you'd need to spend so much more for 1.8 more megapixels. The firmware is exactly the same but I must admit, the k850i looks a lot purdier.

If you have money to spend, the N95 is where it's at now, and it's just come out with expanded memory and in black. It's got a 5MP cam like the k850 but a bigger screen and better software capabilities.

If you have money to burn, consider the iPhone (but if you use mobile internet, wait for the 3G one).

If his priority lies with image quality then i don't think he'd want to go with an iPhone. It doesn't even have flash IIRC.

To make this post more productive I'm going to add that the N95 is a good option if you can afford that type of contract.

The only thing that annoys me about the k850i is the touch screen buttons.

Most annoying thing ever. I keep pressing them and not meaning to, or i press them several times and nothing happens.

>_>

My Going out clubbing phone is the w810i!

Expanable memory, physically light, a physical button for photo so you can feel for it in the dark! a built in torch whihc acts like flash and no touchscreen action. and the 2MP is more than enough at a club which is more likely to ruint he picture when the house lights flash

EDIT: Keep in mind if you are using it for a night out you probs dont want an expensive phone. I dropped mine so many times!

IMO the N95 will get you the best phone and the K850i will get you as good a camera but a not as good phone.

I personally swear on SE phones. Right now I have a W810i - phone is good, music player is just right for my taste, battery runs pretty long, you get 512MB card and ear jacks with it. Camera is quite good but it has no real flash - I think. My girlfriend has the K770i - 3.2 mega pixel camera, real flash light and so on.

Depending on the money you want to spend get a high-end SE phone.

Really? I'm staying well away from the N series now. They almost put me off Nokia all together in fact.

N73 and other similar models before that. It's just the shitty OS running on hardware not good enough to handle it. Plus I'm getting tired of having a phone that tries to do too much I think now. I'm wanting to go in the "phone that's just a phone" direction.

But then again the iPhone does seem very nice.

That's the thing, phones aren't just phones anymore. At some point they've become mobile internet/camera/game combinations, the phone is just another function of a portable media device. They need a new name.

I can see laptops/pdas/cameras/multimedia playing systems/internets/games systems all merging into one device made of pure AWESOME.

Maybe.

On topic. Don't get the k850i if you want a practical phone. Its flashy just for the sake of it.

3 touch buttons? I don't understand the concept of it. All or none.. Stupid.

Yeah but we all know that if Nokia or anybody just made and heavily marketed a simple sturdy cheap phone that EVERYONE would get that (3300 series *cough*) and never need to buy another phone. It's rediculous.

Seriously, you didn't like S60? It's the best software platform I've ever used, it's so stable and responsive. (On my phone at least, Nokia 6120c), ridiculously customizable and can run anything. I have an SSH client, IRC client skype and MSN if I want them. I can hook up my keyboard as well if for some reason I need to or I can plug the phone into the computer and use it as a modem or send texts through the software.

Of course, that's stuff which clearly doesn't interest you. But I think as a phone it's decent as well, sound quality is the best i've ever heard, and basic functions like contact list are easy to use and quite rich.

Welp, each to his own I guess.

Was that aimed at me? Now you see, you have to spend quite a lot of time getting all technical on any system really to use any of those extra functions that you've mentioned. Also, IRC, MSN? It's a phone! Just text someone or call them. I'm rarely away from a computer so there's no point. And no the OS (which is what i'm guessing you're calling S60) was a heap of crap on both of the phones I had it on. That OS has been around for ages and it's only just recently that the hardware has got good enough to use it.

To me, the only thing that I would genuinely want as an extra from a phone right now is a solid, functional and user friendly internet browser, that feels like im actually on the internet, not some gross little program for accessing certain pages. The iPhone is the only one that i've seen do this so far.

I think that the iPhone is great for browsing the internet (but lacks in other areas) but it won't be long before all other phones catch up...A friendly mobile-internet browsing experience will probably be the next big thing dev's push. (Just as music playback/camera functionality were previous.)

Personally I always liked the s60 devices. (Specifically the 8.1 operating systems seen in the 6600 etc.) The trouble is that some of the newer models (OS9.1) either don't have enough on board RAM in relation to what they are doing/or some apps leak RAM. This is what causes massive problems. However, one of the most frequent problems is that apps don't close down properly and so you could be using massive resources without knowing it - And so crashing/restarts and freezing of the handset occurs. It's a pain in the arse when the N-Series phones go schizo but there are third party apps that can help that. (And recent firmware updates).

I guess for those willing to hunt these "specialist" applications it's well worth it (for the stability alone.) Yet for those just wishing to make calls I totally see where (Jamba specifically) complaints come from.

For JUST making calls I would recommend the Nokia 6300. And for ease of use (in regards to internet browsing) I would say the iPhone.

The market is so saturated that you can pretty much find any phone that suits your needs...If you're prepared to pay for it.

I'm one of those old fashioned losers who has an ipod, actual camera and then a phone.

Phone doesn't really matter to me. I only text and ring people on it. If I want to take photo's, I use my camera.
