The useful thing i found is that google converts numbers for you.

E.G. If you type in "19 stone to kilograms" it will show you the answer

19 stone = 120.65557 kilograms

I've been using it for years. I find it a lot easier to use than Microsoft Calculator. Plus its very useful for converting currency values.

This isn't that useful, but if you ever need to demonstrate code on this forum you can use the [noparse][noparse][/noparse] tag. It allows you to type things such as "[noparse]This is emboldened![/noparse]", etcetera.

I was gonna say ctrl + f but everyone here will know it.

Use it to find a specific word/number. Useful on a forum to see if you or someone else has posted on an old page.

 

Everyone else probably uses this, but I use the 'Find More Posts by [your own user name]' and put it on my favourites. (found by clicking the user name) When you click on it, select 'find posts' and then you can check to see any of your comments that have been replied to and see threads that are old.

If you have the joy that is Firefox, then, well, see that search engine in the top right (by default)? Well, you can add lots of different ones to it - I find Chambers, Play.com, Amazon, and, as always, Wikipedia, to be most handy.

 

I may steal that essay sub-editing technique of Dan's, by the way...

Which reminds me, you can get Word and Open Office (don't know about any others) to automatically replace combinations of keystrokes with certain words/symbols, making the suggested one even easier, or, for the really lazy, allowing you to type just "u" or "r" (with spaces, obv), and have them replaced with "you" and "are", respectively.

i have google, wikipedia, runescape highscore, and youtube.

Removing the runescape one as we speak lol.

Are there any desktop/keyboard functions that are much quicker than mouse that people would use often, eg. Enter instead of click (but less obvious)

or alt F4 etc.

ok update:

 

if you write a sentence like 'oranges and pears with more oranges' you do ctrl+f to open the 'find' function and on that, there is a 'replace' tab. go in to that, type in 'oranges' and in the 2nd text field type 'apples' then click replace all

 

you'll then get 'apples and pears with more apples'

99% of programs have Ctrl + Z support, which is undo. Which is quite handy rather than having to use the menus.

 

Some really good programs have "re-do" which is Ctrl + Y. Always handy

 

Another one is Ctrl + Esc, this brings up the start menu if the keyboard doesn't have a windows key (which is highly doubtful).

 

Another great one, i use often: Ctrl + Alt + print screen. It print screens the exact Window you're currently using, so you don't have to crop out the background.

Alt + tab shuffles through programs.

 

Alt + space brings up the restore, minimize, maximise, move menu bar (on the focused window)

 

Windows + D minimises all programs and displays the desktop.

 

Windows + L locks your workstation.

 

Backspace - go back on your browser.

 

You can reverse a lot of functions with the shift key. IE Shift + tab goes back one space. Shift + backspace goes forward (for browsers).

Its mostly a work related thing tbh. I work in a call centre and time is of the essence yadayada.

 

Also they tried to disable our back button, but i found a cheats way of working around it.
