The Quality of Wii Games

Wii is going through a slight lull period. And yes, as much as I like to point out 2009 as being a good year for games, it's sometimes smart be realistic and acknowledge that's not really going to help anyone NOW.

But quiet periods have happened to every console ever released in the past. The difference here is simple:

PS3 and 360 were both in a rut of fuck all having come out at launch, and it wasn't until 12 months later where the situation only just got started getting better. Wii had both its killer apps right there at launch: Wii Sports and Twilight Princess. For Nintendo to keep negativity supressed right up until the console's 2nd birthday, while competitors didn't have a clue what was going on at their own launches, is pretty triumphant.*

Now let's look at Wii's situation this year. Everyone seems to say that the last major Wii game was Brawl, so let's just go with that for now. Brawl was June 2008 (we're in Europe, live with it). Ignoring the rest of the quality games that came out during summer, and ignoring the hundreds of thousands who will be happily playing Animal Crossing this winter, we're forced to look into 2009. I see MadWorld, The Conduit, Dead Rising and House of the Dead (maybe) by March. By my calculations, that's a 9 month period of what many consider to be "no good games coming out". Yet my point is that it's still a shorter period of time than the shitty period 360 and PS3 had straight after launch.

*I know this argument could be destroyed by what was the original point of this thread, but I'd disagree. It was created in the midst of the release of Metroid Prime 3 and Super Mario Galaxy. My forum inactivity and gaming activity by Xmas 2007 can vouch for how much quality games overshadow 100 times the ammount of shovelware.

My opinion has definitely changed for the worse. When this Christmas' big game is Animal Crossing, a game that makes a minimal amount of improvements of the last two, I start to wonder if anyone is putting the effort in on the console.

I just want to make a general point here about the need for "big games", sorry for directing it at you but hopefully you'll see what I mean.

You started the Gamer's Seal of Approval project so that smaller, lesser known games which may not sell millions of copies or have millions of dollars pumped into their production may have a fighting chance in the market and in the eyes of gamers. Why then completely ignore all the smaller Wii games that are out now or will be released over the coming weeks?

This goes for everyone - how many of you have downloaded a WiiWare game, and which ones have you downloaded? There's been plenty of excellent smaller games out on WiiWare in this time period where everyone's console is a supposed dust sheet.

Nailed it with astounding accuracy. 100 points.

My opinion is pretty much the same, 3rd parties still don't do all they can, but they did pick up the pace and there's plenty of good software. Sometimes I get dates mixed up, so I'll skip some games I'm not sure were release in 08, but this year with Brawl, Mario Kart, Wario Land, De Blob, Disaster, Force Unleashed, Wii Music, Animal Crossing, Tiger Woods, We Golf (or wtvr the name is), CoD, Sonic (which is apparently good), Skate It and Shaun White (I know! It's from Ubi!), not to mention Wii Ware and VC, I'm more than happy. I see people content all the time buying good but not great and even mediocre games for other consoles, but when it comes to Wii if they're not AAA, high budget games they're ignored or shunned and that's annoying. Just Wario Land, Disaster and De Blob alone in the last few months of the year should satisfy any gamer saying there haven't been great games.

I think 3rd parties are starting to improve, I don't know if they'll ever reach the level they should've had earlier on, specially graphic-wise considering they should already know how to work with GC. What I want to know now is how will Motion+ be used, considering it's an add on, there're some inherent risks.

That is very true and well said.

But people like me who can't afford to buy too many games are gonna lean towards recent 360 titles tbh. I mean, Fable, Far Cry 2, Gears of War 2, Fallout 3 and im sure there's more on top of that. I admit i say the wii doesn't have 'too many great games' and whilst saying that I haven't gone out and bought games like De Blob (which looked really good tbh), it's just there are better quality games on the 360 this xmas. That said, if you gave me £200 to spend on games I would def check out De Blob, it looks brilliant.

As for Wiiware games, apart from Lost Winds nothing has really struck me (YET). Compare that to XBLA where i've downloaded Braid (one of my favouirte games ever made), BC:Rearmed, Geometry Wars, Castle Crashers and soon STFII:HDTR.

A lot of people out there in video games land can't afford to spent our money on too many games, so the games I will spend my money on are generally games that make me go 'wow' and that'll have me hooked for a while.

Yeah, for people who can't afford everything, they need to prioritize, I on one hand prioritize most Wii games over those games, mainly because they entertain me more, I'd choose Wario or De Blob over Fallout, Gow or Fable any day (dunno about Mirror's Edge though :P) and because the 360 ones are available on PC sometimes, but that's a matter of taste obviously. Luckily I found Fallout 3 LE and Fable II cheap.

Although the Q4 line-up is a bit disappointing Nintendo have given us a new Zelda, Smash Bros, Mario Kart and Metroid. Arguably they're also the best in those series. Plus all the casual stuff such as Wii Sports. And that's within first 18 months. Just to put it into perspective...

We used to have 9 months droughts between the classics on Gamecube as well (and just as much complaining on this very forum), but then there was always some quality third party title you could play in the meantime. But I wouldn't just blame this on third parties being lazy...

The worst thing about Wii being underpowered isn't the lack of HD or fancy graphics, but the difficulty porting quality multiplatform games for it. On Gamecube you had good multiplatform games such as Soul Calibur 2, SSX3, Prince of Persia, Timesplitters 2 and all the EA Sports games. Now, we're getting spin-offs and lastgen-ports of the same franchises...

Nicely done Tellyn.

WiiWare is brilliant. Actually, in my opinion it is one of the greatest features of the Wii at the moment. Like those beautiful Indie films that slip through the gaps playing on WiiWare is refreshing and fun.

But once in a while I want to see Bruce Willis blowing some shit up.

The small company effort on the Wii is brilliant. But I never complained it wasn't. The problem is the big companies. There is not one game I have wanted to buy from one the big companies since summer. Not one. And although the small games are great, that's just what they are; small. Once in a while I want a Fallout 3 of a Gears of War 2 or a Far Cry 2. Yeah they ain't that original, but they're fun as all hell. And if I get bored with that I can go to LiveArcade and buy a small game from there.

The greatest thing Nintendo did this generation is make the Wii easily to develop for and easy to get games onto. Yet in doing that they forgot that the big companies have the money to be putting up HD games and 50 hour quests, and they want to. But that is just more possible on the 360 and PS3, so those games go there. So it's left to Nintendo and its second parties to push the Wii to its limits and give us the epicness. And in the past they have, with MP3, SMG and Z:TP. But more and more now they're appealing to their new audience with games that are fun but don't hold my attention for too long.

And that's great. They're making loads of money, turning record profits. Go them. Just don't expect me to stick around.

What's that? You're re-releasing the gamecube classics? Great, shame I already have them.

And you know what, it's not the third parties fault either. In fact I cannot blame them anymore for the shit they often turn out on the Wii. It's expected with the kind of example Nintendo is setting. They're supposed to be the company of innovation this generation, yet animal crossing is the same game i've already played twice, Disaster has the mechanics of an N64 game, mario kart has made minimal progress. Where's the innovation? Where is the grand leap forward in gameplay? Where is my f**king swordfighting game?

Nintendo has proven you can make a low cost game like WiiSports and sell millions (Japan where it is sold separately) and naturally 3rd parties follow suit.

Where's my pokemon MMORPG?

Well then, my opinion about BOTH years (never got to write it in 2007 part)

2007: The bombs were sent, Mario Galaxy, Legend of Zelda Twilight Princess, Metroid Prime 3, Mario Party 8, etc.

I must say that this year was only worh the Nintendo bombs and some games on the store, mostly it was shit trying to copy Wii Sports and game that didn't know to use motion well.

Then, it came 2008:

Here are the pros:

-WiiWare (Gosh, with 60 Euros, that can be used to buy a great game, i am able to buy 6 good/great games, its definatevely worth it)

-More bombs Nintendo sent (Yes, less than in 2007, but still a lot of them, and Super Smash Bros Brawl takes the pie to the best of them)

Cons:

-A lot of shit

Overall, 2008 was better than 2007, but both were pretty mediocre, 2009 seems pretty good, but i won't get very hyped for it.

...Amen brother... Amen.

Tellyn is right though, and I agree. But the traditionalist gamer in me still longs for that one, big, mother of a game - the type that keeps your attention till you hear the blackbirds chirping and you realize its Saturday 06.21, you pause the game, go check the rising sun, yawn with it and go get some breakfast - then go to bed with a careless smile of pure joy... Those are the memories I have of games that get released during festivities. Haven't had that experience since TP in 2006 and Brawl.
