October 15th, 2007 - AdvertisingAge have awarded Nintendo with a Marketer of the Year Award for their steps forward in the gaming world via the Wii. AdAge say Nintendo have created new types of gamers, and through sheer marketing brilliance have brought videogames to the homes of people who've never picked up a controller before in their lives.

Julie Shumaker, VP-sales for in-game agency Double Fusion and former Electronic Arts national sales director had this to say about Nintendo: ''They've always had a wonderful conviction about the market they will own. They saw Xbox and PlayStation duking it out over tech specs ... and realized, 'Hey, let them go ahead and let them fight it out over the 18 to 34 year old males. We can expand the market.' "

Thanks to smart marketing, Nintendo has seen the awards roll in, and profits are rising all the time. Nintendo stock is at an all time high, the company is now worth 10 trillion yen (EUR71 billion or £49 billion), which puts them right up there with Japanese car giants Toyota and Mitsubishi, and shares are worth 70,600 Yen (EUR420 or £294). And with major first party games getting releases at the end of 2007 and into 2008, the future only looks good for Nintendo.

Gotta say, I think they deserve it. Although the adverts don't really appeal to me, being a more veteran gamer, they're extremely successful at what they do and certainly seem to get the Wii Brand into more peoples heads then PS3 or 360 adverts.

Thoughts anyone?

I wouldn't say Nintendo have particularly marketed their console that well... the adverts are still pretty few and far between and aren't from what I've seen on as much when the more casual shows are on. I mean ok at E3 and such like they made a big song and dance about the casual market and shifting paradigms but the casual market isn't going to be sat watching a live stream of the conferences etc... like we all do...

I think it has spread far more through word of mouth and news articles...

The E3 press conference was infront of the entire American Mainstrea media (Washington Post, News Channels etc). That's why the whole thing was so focused on casuals, and Wii Fit, cause they were trying to give them something to write about.

I think they need to up the anti now it's approaching Christmas, and need to really start pushing Super Mario Galaxy, Metroid, Mario / Sonic Olympics and some of the third party games, but so far so good I'll say. The Wii name is so great in sticking in peoples heads.

The thing is marketing a console and advertising it is completly different.

The sales clearly show that it was very well advertised.

Has there even been any PS3 adverts :wtf:

In all honesty, I've not seen one at all on tv...

The only ones i have seen are the very first launch advert and then the heavenly sword one as well!

But it would be unfair to take from my experince as i am to busy playing games to watch tv! lol

Well, actually the only adverts I see in Portugal about videogaming is about the PS3 or PS3 games with almost no exception. Maybe 1 or 2 Xbox360 ones.

But here in Portugal Wii is the most selled console of the Country, so that means that they are having Sucess from one point at least :)

I think it must be the programs you watch as I've seen loads of Nintendo adverts on TV. And most programs I watch I sky+ so fast forward through them alot of the time, but still manage to see a nintendo one and have a look at it. The most recent ones being Super Paper Mario, Trauma Center and Big Brain Academy, oh and I've seen that brain age 2 one loads of times.

I don't see them as much now, but earlier in the year alot of the comedy shows on UKTVG2 were sponsered by the DS too.

I think you should post this in every single one of those threads that grumble about how Nintendo need to do more advertising. You got a couple of hours?

Change the thread title. They won an award for marketing, not adverts. There's a pretty big difference.

Er . . . oh. Good point.

I swear I heard the sound effects for DS and Wii adverts more often then watching the adverts. The TV is left on in the background so I guess that explans it.

Oh, and I must have seen so many Phantom Hourglass adverts this week. Still hasn't got me to buy the game yet, but it's on my to-do list.
