Posted May 27, 2010 Actually I live with a bunch of jocks and I can confirm that geeks are still uncool, and it is all about how much pussy one can aquire/invade. But I can live with that. Because there is no choice. Anyway, I'm having an angry, self-abusive day of witlessness and lost words. Etc.
Posted May 27, 2010 I think it really depends on who you ask. I don't think there is such a thing as general opinion anymore - if there ever was.

Aww come on, I've met those guys, they don't mind geeks, they are just a bit dickish to you!
Posted May 27, 2010 Actually I think it's just easier for people to find similar people thanks to the internet, and thus feel socially acceptable more easily than previously. Jocks still think geeks are uncool, geeks still think jocks are idiots. In fact, I don't care. I can't argue about anything anymore. Too many circumstances, too much subjectivity. Posted May 27, 2010 English/non-American people use "jocks" to mean sporty people? It means a Scottish person.

But it is still a shame about the people you're living with. If you do live in Sheffield next year are you planning to live with other people again?

Posted May 27, 2010 I thought "morons" meant Scottish people. Yeah but sometimes there are Scottish people around, so it's handy to have a less offensive synonym.

Posted May 27, 2010 Well depending on your belief of the usage of semantics Jock (meaning Scottish) is antiquated as its seldom used (and very specialised) compared to the much more commonly used and accepted sportsman usage. Its like trying to argue that people using the word gay should be referring to being happy.

Its like trying to argue that people using the word gay should be referring to being happy. But gay is a development in our language, whereas jock (for a sporty person) is an American term. I'd say it's more akin to people saying public school when they mean state school. (Or pants when they mean trousers).
Posted May 27, 2010 But gay is a development in our language, whereas jock (for a sporty person) is an American term. I'd say it's more akin to people saying public school when they mean state school. (Or pants when they mean trousers). An American term which has been assimilated into our language though (from its original usage (50s) really due to the 'America is cool' vibe running through the 60s youth of England). You can't just say it can't be an evolution of our language because its origin is American. As I said, its just taken over the original usage. The other examples you give aren't used as much but jock is quite commonly used over here (and hell, they may even wear jocks too but I can't say I've ever gotten intimate with one). Language is about power and usage after all. And we all know the Scots have neither power nor use :p (although I'm mostly just arguing this because it annoys me how much people get their knickers in a twist about any American language being used)
Posted May 27, 2010 Essentially; the word Jock doesn't apply exclusively to any group, and you obviously knew what I was on about when I used it in the sense that I did, so let's all shufup and move on with our lives. (Oh and Nightwolf; If I stay in sheffield I'd currently have to live with a guy who I actually find quite annoying, but I'd be around the corner from Dan, Shorty and nami -- I pretty much change my mind about what to do with my life every day. And less than a month to sort it! Whatevs.)

Posted May 27, 2010 (and hell, they may even wear jocks too but I can't say I've ever gotten intimate with one). Jockstraps are kinda sexy, in a weird way. Language is about power and usage after all. And we all know the Scots have neither power nor use :p My opinion on the whole affair:

Posted May 27, 2010 Ageing rockstars trying to lip up to their reputations? Yeah I get that, but I mean who was the first? What's the history behind it. I can't internet-detective the answer... "During the Rolling Stones' 1972 North American tour, guitarist Keith Richards and musician Bobby Keyes hauled the television set from Room 1015 out to the balcony, and dropped it down 10 stories. Best part is that Robert Frank got it all on tape for Cocksucker Blues. You can watch the entire 1972 Rolling Stones tour on Youtube. Fascinating stuff. And apparently, The Who's Keith Moon has done the same thing at Riot House. Throw the TV out, I mean." That's the closest I can get to an origin story. It's not clear as to which Keith was actually first. Stones were who came to mind when I first posed the question to myself.
Posted May 28, 2010 Last couple of days have been pretty exhausting, went to Chester, planned to go at midday but ended up being delayed after stopping a few times in Glossop for various things - wound up on the Manchester Ring-road at rush-hour, not good. Went to Chester Zoo yesterday which was awesome, the bat cave is just amazing, they just fly right past your face. Saw lots of other things to talk about but doubt anyone cares didn't really get chance to explore any of Chester as hoped, trip home took many hours, still very tired x_x
Posted May 28, 2010 Yes it does. Wrong. Jock isn't a term used to describe the Scottish people rather a term more generally used to describe Scottish soldiers. Still referring to people but not the general populous as some people here seem to think.
