Nintendo News | Rune Factory RPG Exclusive on Wii

C3 Exclusive - In Cubed³'s interview with Yasuhiro Wada of Marvelous Interactive, it was revealed that Rune Factory, the RPG spin-off of Harvest Moon, will be heading to Nintendo's Wii. In the same interview there is also talk of Wii controls for Magical Melody, Virtual Console support and much more.

C3: And with Rune Factory 2 now announced for DS in Japan this year, is that set to become a long-term series that will eventually appear on the Wii?

YW: Yes, of course. We’ve already removed the subtitle of “Harvest Moon” from the game title in Japan and Rune Factory is now independent game, working as an original series. I can’t explain the details, but a new angle will be added to Wii version and Rune Factory will grow up as an original series.

A Harvest Moon RPG? Huh? How does that work?
Well the DS game/s work like this...

Rune Factory is spin-off of the Harvest Moon series, part of a re-invention of the franchise for its 10th anniversary. Described by producer Yoshifumi Hashimoto as Harvest Moon where you wield a sword, the game has being developed with the idea of creating a fantasy world in which the player exists, rather than the standard type of RPG where you play the role of a hero and work your way through a storyline. You are able to capture monsters, raise them on your farm, and add them to your adventuring party.

Produced by Yoshifumi Hashimoto, Rune Factory is a DS-exclusive title that takes the world of Harvest Moon and turns it upside down in a unique fantasy world. Now a balance of crop-harvesting, animal-tending, and monster battling, Rune Factory promises to deliver traditional Harvest Moon gameplay with a peculiar twist that seems to be very reminiscent of the classic "Dragon Warrior Monsters" world. Battle and capture monsters, tend to them in your village, and harness their energy in order to bring peace to the land.

IGN: First of all, the title is Rune Factory: A Fantasy Harvest Moon. How does this series differ from Harvest Moon, and what additions have been made to the game and series since the first Harvest Moon DS?

Markay: Rune Factory: A Fantasy Harvest Moon is a blend of the Harvest Moon series and a mythical RPG. Some of the fundamental features found in the Harvest Moon series, such as growing crops, tending livestock, making friends and getting married are in Rune Factory. In addition, Rune Factory also has some new elements normally not found in a Harvest Moon title, such as the battling of monsters, a complex storyline and living in a fantasy world.

IGN: So the game is now farming intensive and combat intensive. How is that blend handled? Are the two sections of the game divided at all, or will you be farming one moment, and battling the next?

Markay: Both go hand and hand together. You have Health Points (HP) and Rune Points (RP)…basically your life line and stamina. When your Rune Points are all used up doing activities like swinging a sword, watering crops or breaking rocks, you start to use your HP. When your HP is gone…game over. Therefore you need to keep a steady supply of Rune Points. Growing crops is the way to do this. When crops are ready to be harvested, a Rune Point Crystal is created, which will replenish some of your Rune Points. Crops = Rune Factories! As you explore caves and battle monsters, you also need to plant crops to help restore the much-needed stamina to complete your task.

IGN: From what we've seen the game focuses on a more fantasy-inspired world. How does that affect the crops and animals you tend? Are any of the previous Harvest Moon elements still there?

Markay: As mentioned above, growing crops is a bit more important than just a source of income…it is necessary for your survival. Unlike in Harvest Moon where you tend cows, sheep and chickens, in Rune Factory: A Fantasy Harvest Moon you befriend monsters and tend to them and in return they produces similar goods (milk, eggs, wool).

i have just had a thought. wouldn't this game be ideal as an mmorpg? i would love it. Everyone playing together with each having particular things they can add to the world.
Well he does say...
