Jimbob
I've been thinking bout HD and Blu Ray, which one of the two formats will actually win and be the true next-gen format. I'm thinking that HD could be Americas next format and blu-ray is UK's next format, what do you guys think about it.

Coolness Bears
I think samsung are developing a dvd player that has a combo drive and can play both types of dvd. This should stop confused consumers, who are unsure which of the high definition dvd types to get Blue Ray or HD-DVD So they both can exist on the market at the same time. Although ultimately one could get more sales than the other any way, thus wiping which ever out of the competition. The DVD player will probably be really expensive as well. Guest Jordan
At the moment and for the very foreseeable future, neither. HD movies is way too much of a niché market and its not going to take off as much as DVD's did, because they lack alot of the 'features' upgrading from VHS had. Cube
Neither. By the time most people will want to get into the HD thing properly, digital distribution will probably take over, and DVDs (as they are cheap) will be kept for those who don't want it. Exactly like Minidisks - Those were beaten by mp3/digital distribution, and CDs were kept due to compatibility/price.
Caris
I honestly think a good DVD upscaller is the way to go.
Calza
You guys say that but really quite alot of people still use VHS. Can digital media really replace DVDs that quickly? No wai! And the thing about HD-DVD becomming USA's format and BluRay being ours is never going to happen. I bet are film sales are not even 10% of USA's and where are the biggest percent of film studios? America.
McPhee
This has been done to death already. I think the conclusion was neither because the whole idea of 2 formats is dumb and is costing the industry Billions in potential lost sales. Its the same old problem that consumer electronics is having at the moment: Everyone is trying to make as much money as possible. In the end this results in nobody making as much money as they should
Marshmellow
All I know is they need to choose a winner soon. I'm getting impatient!
Shorty
I really do think one will win eventually. Remember how expensive DVDs and DVD players were when they first appeared? How about the first widescreen or plasma televisions? I wouldn't be surprised if one day HD DVD/ blu-ray and the players will sell for 10% of the price and be in nearly as many homes as current DVDs - and at that point a clear winner will emerge. I remember a family close to us bought us a DVD player once. It was a small one, didn't look nice and kept freezing the image, cost a lot though. However you gotta remember the underdog usually wins. I don't know anything about these but they lost out to VHS even though Betamax was superior to it. HD-DVD is the underdog I think, Blu-ray has higher disc capacity etc. I'm not sure which'll win

Jon
Blu Ray. HD-DVD doesn't have enough backing. There's a lot of talk recently of Universal (HD-DVD's only loyal supporter) releasing for Blu Ray as well.
Calza
HD-DVD. Blu Ray doesn't have enough support from porn companies. Theres been alot of talk about them favouring HD-DVD over Blu Ray. This what won VHS over Betamax but at the moment it might be too soon to say.
DCK
Bluray has no porn. HD-DVD has. People will want HD porn. HD DVD wins. I kind of hope that HD-DVD wins too, as it's generally cheaper and easier and I hate to see Sony's stuff winning.
Caris
People who buy porn dont care if it's in Hd, they just want porn. It's movies with big action shots and that they want to see in HD.

Actually they do, alot of websites are now offering their videos in HD and it seems more and more 'directors' are now shooting in HD. And like DCK said HD-DVD have porn, Blu-Ray does not. Supply and Demand.

There's a lot of talk recently of Universal (HD-DVD's only loyal supporter) releasing for Blu Ray as well. Most publishers are backing both now or will be soon. They've all realised or are begining to realise that this isn't going to end quickly and that theres more money to be made by backing both. Sony and maybe Disney will remain Blu-Ray exclusive, other than that its down to releases. Its pretty even at the moment but HD-DVD is looking like it will have the better summer (The Matrix Trilogy being a prime example)
Marshmellow
Why does Sony always have to be different? I mean with Betamax, UMD, and now Blu-Ray... Well hopefully with Sony's success rate will continue.
theguyfromspark
Thinking about it from a typical consumer's perspective, the name HD DVD is clearly more meaningful than blu ray. I'm sure if i asked my Dad what Blue ray was he wouldn't know, but he'd have a good guess at HD DVD, and that's got to count for something once the prices start to fall and "real" people start buying them. Jon
Why do you you fools constantly swipe Sony for Blu Ray? They are only one of many backers, they don't own it.
