The fish
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Al_Burj How the hell do they stay up?? I'm a civil engineer, so I could explain it to you in some detail... Put simply, use of diagonal struts made from a strong material (steel is still the best for the mass/cost/strength ratio) keeps the whole thing inflexible (so it won't twist/bend over), and strong enough to support it's own (relatively light) weight. Pile foundations, are, of course, essential. Oh, and the contractors for the Al Burj, WSP, are a likely candidate for where I'll be in my placement year if I don't get a position in Canada. I may well be involved in he Al Burj, in fact...
Falcon_BlizZACK
...From a religious stand point, this structure kind of reminds of the colossal building people tried to construct at Babylon. God seeing it as an act of defiance or challenge, confused the people by making them speak different languages... Dubai will be the gateway to hell. Dubai is the gateway to the UAE, which, if you're, say, a women or gay, pretty hellish.

martinist
I was in Dubai back in 2003 its was bairly even started then. I was thinking of going back some time this year maybe. I heard they were also building a rotating skyscraper which looks kind of cool.
Jimbob
It would look impressive once it is complete, but this day and age of terroists and all that, this would be a huge target to attack (no pun intended). Still, an engineering feat.
Jav_NE
Looks nice. They have cheated at the top though with the large spike, that gains an extra 50m or so! What will the building be used for?

MoogleViper
And the crazy thing is, they are already planning another tower in Dubai which will be almost twice the height of Burj Dubai. Sweet jesus, 800M tall? Is the next one going to be 1KM?! Great maths there Jordan.

Gizmo
Tallest building I've seen in person is the TV Tower in Berlin, which, after a quick google, is 365m tall. And damn, that was big. So 818...fuck. I want to go see it when it's done for sure.

Pyxis
Chinese skyscraper builders to put up equivalent of 10 New Yorks, says Rio Tinto · Research suggests 50,000 towers over next 20 years http://www.guardian.co.uk/business/2008/aug/27/riotinto.commodities Can't imagine what Shanghai will look like. Canary Wharf is so tiny it's embarrassing. The Petronas towers are great because of the Marks and Spencer at Suria KLCC (the big shopping centre at the bottom of the structure). Yummy! Malaysians are really proud of it, but I believe that a British architect designed it.
Shino
From Dubai!... umm no... ya big racist! [/joke] And I bet all this big ass buildings is were they train them! The tallest building I've seen was probably the twin towers and those were 500m, this thing is almost double the size. It's mind blowing.

MoogleViper
Did you jump up and down on it? Nah I'm much too much of a poof for that. I didn't mind standing and looking down, but I didn't like looking down when I was walking across it.
