Dog-amoto
I have been following the construction of this for some time now with great interest (yes, I should really get a life!) This is a truly colossal structure being built in Dubai, scheduled for completion some time in 2009/10. When built, it will be the undisputed world's tallest structure by some margin, possibly measuring from 800m/2650ft to as much as 1000m/3000ft in height. The final height is being kept secret. By comparison, the Empire State Building is a mere 381m/1250ft and the current world's tallest is the Taipei 101 tower in Taiwan which is 509m/1670ft tall. Already, Burj Dubai is the 2nd tallest building in the world with 129 floors and a height of around 480m. It's expected to be the tallest this Summer. http://www.dubaimegaprojects.com/ http://www.emporis.com/en/wm/bu/?id=burjdubai-dubai-unitedarabemirates You would think that after Sept 11, that building huge towers like this would be like putting a giant bullseye up for the terrorists, but what do you think? Is it a marvel of engineering or foolhardy? Or both? Chataboutit.

AshMat
I've been following this for a while now, man it looks awesome. But dangerous.. Good to know there's someone else around that's as interested in Skyscrapers as i am.
weeyellowbloke
They'll be fucked if they have an Earth quake... True, it's not that far away from the Zargros faultline in Iran which has quite a few major quakes a year (had a 7.0 one last year I think). But then human endeavour often picks the stupidest most inapproriate areas. Just look at Los Angeles, Mexico City and Tokyo all of which are stuck slap bang on top of some of the most unstable areas of the world. Still looks like a pretty impressive project. Looks like they're sticking towers on top of yet more towers like a house of cards.

Blackfox
First of all, nice thread. A good engineering discussion is always a Brucey bonus! I really like that fact Dubai are doing this. They've relaised that their oil will be gone at some point in the future; so they're spending they're money now and investing in a more tertiary based economy. Plus, it does look spectacular and its great that people are expanding the limits of engineering. I doubt terrorists will attack this though. Dubai is a mainly Muslim country, and I doubt the extremists would attack a Muslim country.. Earthquakes might be a danger, but with a building this size the rick factors must have been calculated! But yeah, ncie building, let the discussing continue!

Earthquakes might be a danger, but with a building this size the rick factors must have been calculated! Especially countries like Dubai are in danger. Loose, progressive muslim countries like Dubai are seen as apostates (not sure if that's the right word) because they don't share the same fundamentalists' vision; in their eyes they destroy the islam and should be destroyed, too. Countries like Dubai also have far more difficulty in protecting themselves against terrorism. Awesome building though. I'm getting an aspirin now. Dan_Dare
thing is about the fault line, very very smart people spend alot of time working their way around such problems. it'll be built properly.

As for the earthquakes, the people behind this surely know about them. Edit: While reading through wikipedia I found this: According to the census conducted by Statical Center of Dubai, the population of the emirate was 1,422,000 as of 2006, which included 1,073,000 males and 349,000 females HAHAHHAHAHAHAAA!!! Ramar
One question, how the hell do they get the cranes down from the top? Or how do they even get them up there to begin with..
Dog-amoto
One question, how the hell do they get the cranes down from the top? Or how do they even get them up there to begin with.. I always wondered that too. It seems that they build the crane up as they go along and reverse the process, dismantling it after they're finished. http://www.howstuffworks.com/tower-crane.htm

weeyellowbloke
What the hell. That has to be one of the most random things to stick at the top of a skyscraper. I'd be scared to dive for any balls.

Dog-amoto
Sorry to bump an 18 month old thread but I didn't want to create another. Burj Dubai has now topped out, ie has reached it's final height, and will be completed by the end of the year. It is 818m (2684ft) tall and is now the tallest structure ever built Just a comparison with other tall buildings And the crazy thing is, they are already planning another tower in Dubai which will be almost twice the height of Burj Dubai. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Al_Burj How the hell do they stay up??
