I think it's safe to say the days of arcades are long and gone. We have no decent one left and every arcade that comes out now has to have some gimmicky crap attached to it..Like a gun or whatever. I love the stick and buttons.I think we are had our good memories. I miss it

My favourite arcade game i would say would have to be street fighter 2 turbo followed closely by bubble bobble. What's yours?

Way, way too many good memories of arcade gaming as a yoof...

Kung Fu master (Classic I could complete 4 times over)

Yie Ar Kung Fu (Was crap at it to begin with, but after honing my skills on the c64 version, could complete twice in a row....Hot fighting history)

ASO (One of the first shooters with powerups...quite a rarity being I only ever saw 2)

Dragons Lair/Space Ace

Star-Rider (Was there one year, then disappeared the next....cases seemed to be recycled for Hang on)

Bubble Bobble

Nemesis, Salamander, Vulcan Venture (Konami were the shoot em up Daddy)

Gauntlet (Fantastic multiplayer....VALKYRIE, YOU ARE ABOUT TO DIE!!!)

Karate Champ (twin joystick contols)

Street Fighter 2

Shao Lins Road

Paperboy (I remember the blisters on the thumb knuckles from the grips)

Galaxian 3 (Ok it was shallow for the time, but awsome)

Galaxian

Ridge Racer

Hammering Harry....(Hitting people with hammers....doesnt get much better)

Space Invaders

Defender

Tron (I would love to own this alongside a Star wars machine)

Point Blank (Light gun games are like a drug to me for beating)

Time Crisis (Pissed on XXX's top 3 scores in Meadowhall, XXX was the guy playing the game on gamesmaster

Sky Kid (Quality)

Wonderboy

Ghosts and Goblins

Hogans Alley

Donkey Kong

Boot Hill (early game...)

Alien Syndrome

Shoot Away (early light gun game....still see it to this day at seaside arcades)

Pop & Twinbee

Ordyne (top shooter...if I remember correctly was the prequel to pop and twin bee)

Commando

Bionic Commando

Dragon Ninja.....

Green Beret

Combat school (Blistered palm from track ball)

Express Raider (A game I mastered and enjoyed)

Super Mario Bros

Pole position

Mikey

Tapper

Robotron (I had never wiped out a level as quick before this game)

Smash TV (Amusing and violent for the time)

Tempest

R-Type (fantastic shooter)

Splatter House (Mad game, dunno why I liked It...)

Robocop

Phoenix (See Below)

Gorf (Classic shooter and still playable for me today)

Moon Cresta

Bezerk

Marble Madness (The music still haunts me to this day, had a really nice precise feeling when controlling)

Hypersports

Track and field (Both excellent and would cause a debate on best button technique)

Star Wars (Still one of the best)

Pac land (eye candy.....the first game that everyone described as cartoon graphics)

Mappy (great game, and the tune that looped in your head for the rest of your life)

Star Force

I could go on for the rest of everyones life and possibly longer if I had the braincells left.

And that isnt accounting for the horrendous pinball addiction phase I went through.

Well this is more recent, but last weekend in Skegness i stuck my 30p in, and went all the way through Time Crisis, right to the end and finished in one go. I was well proud, also had a small crowd of 4 or 5 people watching. Also Point Blank, just gun games in general.

I spent a good chunk of change on the following:

-Legend of Kage (yes the critically-bashed VC game)

-Ivan Stewart Off-Road Rally

-Cruisin USA

-Mortal Kombat 2

-Samaurai Showdown

-Sonic Blastman

-Arcade Punch-Out

I did that in front of an ex of mine once, she wasn't at all impressed, in fact I'd wager she was pissed off that I'd wasted so much time on a game lol

I forgot to list Point Blank, that was amazing.

I don't remember many stick-and-buttons arcades. Only being The Simpsons, Mortal Kombat, Metal Slug and a bunch of other games that I cannot for the life of me remember the names of.

Non-stick-and-button coin-ops: Out Run, Point Blank, Time Crisis, House of the Dead, Hang On. And my favourite: Prop Cycle.

All these arcades remind me of the times going on holiday to Wales. The class arcades they had at Aberystwyth Pier, the Cambrian Coast club, Clarach Bay and the Caravan Site where we stayed for our hols. Good Times.

Arcade isn't very big here, but I have fond memories of Super Hang On, Harrier, Time Crisis, Ghosts and Goblins, Metal Slug, Puzzle Bubble and Cruisin USA.

Nemesis

I used to love that game, me and a couple of mates used to completely dominate the high score table on the machine in our local arced and were constantly struggling to keep the number one spot from each other.

4q2, you have spent some serious time in the arcades!

These are the ones I played regularly at one time or another:

- Pac-Man (tabletop version was awesome!)

- Super Mario Bros

- Pacland

- Splatterhouse

- Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (4-player)

- Puzzle Bobble

- House of the Dead

- House of the Dead 2

- Time Crisis

- Streetfighter Alpha 2

- Pang

I remember the time I saw Pang for the first time on Bournemouth pier with a teenage girl standing in front of it. I was about 10.

She was waggling the stick and pressing buttons and things appeared to be happening on the screen, but I couldn't understand why the words 'Press Start' were constantly flashing on the screen.

After watching for a few seconds, I came to the conclusion that she was just playing around whilst the demo was rolling. I asked her if she was really playing. "Yes" she said, obviously a bit annoyed at being interrupted. She actually then moved the stick left a touch, stopped, then right a touch and stopped so I could see the guy move left and right on the screen.

"But it says 'Press Start'" I pointed out. After she almost shouted that it was talking about Player 2, I walked away with a very red face.

Loved the game ever since! Who else has played the arcades at Bournemouth Pier?

I wish we had have had it locally, unfortunatley it was one of those games that was restricted to a day trip or holiday to the seaside, seeing quite a few arcade conversions of it never helped either being that they never felt faithful (until Gradius III on the snes)...The intro theme to the game was one of them that stuck in my head though.

R-type was the one that we treated in a competitve way locally.

I have and still would be if it hadnt have been for the downhill trend of innovation in arcades in recent years. The last time I visited Namco wonderpark in Meadowhall (My current 'local' arcade) I was a bit unimpressed with the fact the it was full of beat em up sequels and those damn prize ticket machines.

I liked the looks of the laser disc cabinets from American Laser Games - stuff like Mad Dog McCree, Who Shot Johnny Rock? and Crime Patrol always had that air of technology other arcade games could only dream of at the time.

I've played in alot of arcades, but my best memories are of The Simpsons game by Konami and Street Fighter II': Hyper Fighting.

I used to be so good at the latter, back in the day :(

I used to play those as well. I imagine The Simpsons used the same cabinet and hardware as the TMNT arcade game, which was also great :D

The only thing that came near to them in recent years were the Sega 'Holographic' games which were a good novelty for about an hour if anyone remembers those.

Ah the good ol' days of hanging around arcades all day - (now the playground of pedaphiles the world over) they gave us all great joy - back in the day.

I remember getting a quid off my parents

70p would see me complete Double Dragon (god bless that powerfull elbow move!) and the other 30p would get me about quarter of the way through Golden Axe.

Also spent many a 10p's worth on the fantastic StarWars "sit in cabinet" game - there's nothing quite like blowing up the Death Star in full Isometric goodness and then going for some canned Space Invaders in tomato sauce at yer Grans!

yep them were the days indeed.

We never had any arcades around here, so never got to play any as a kid. I only remember this one fighter arcade thing set up somewhere in Spain, but we never played it.

First time I really played any arcades was on my first trip to the States about three years ago now I think. And I played again last winter. Had quite some fun with the Simpsons arcade actually; four player button mashing. =P

There's pretty much no arcade machines around here, but when I used to go swimming at Doncaster, I always used to pop into the dome, get some Wimpy fries and spend an hour on Point Blank with my brother.

I also spent hundreds on those 2p machines if that counts. I was addicted to the damn things. I actually ran away from my dad once because he tried to get me back home. When he finally caught me we was next to a donut van, and he bought me one, so I won in the end. Ho ho ho, those were the days.

i spent alot of time playing the house of the dead series in the arcades. I think the house of the dead 4 just came out last year also, but i haven't played that yet.
