  1. Internet

    Why fix what isn't broken?
  2. Portable WiFi Device?

Nokia N800 is a great WiFi device. It's replaced my iPod Touch as my wifi device for a few reasons: 1) The iPod Touch's web browser, while great, is too prone to crashing for me 2) The N800's browser is just as good as Firefox on the PC, mainly because that's what it's based on 3) The N800 browser plays Flash 4) The N800 allows you to install your own programs, aswell as do everything the iPod Touch can. ScummVM on the go is great, it even runs The Curse of Monkey Island :-D
  3. Updating my CPU

If your PCs struggling to keep up after a virus then you'd probably be better reinstalling Windows. That used to be what I'd do after a virus, it's a pain in the ass trying to remove every trace of a virus, there's always just enough left behind to slow down your computer.
  4. Wii Fit

Anyone else having a problem that when they move the board to a different part of their floor a message comes up saying their weight has changed quite a bit? I think my floor's pretty uneven so that might be it. It's not a great space in front of my TV so I have to move it about for example if I want to do the pressups. I did a check , I did a body test then moved the board and did another test and I had lost 5lbs in a matter of 3 minutes. Anyone else having a similar issue?
  5. Mario Kart Wii

Yeah I did that but it wasn't working. Just figured it out though, at the first screen where it says Press the A Button, you've got to press the A button on the GC controller. *jackster = stupid* :awesome:
  6. Official Issues and Problems Thread

I've got the GAME Component Cables and they work fine :-) Don't know about any of the other unofficial ones though
  7. Mario Kart Wii

OK stupid question but how do you set the controller mode to GC controller?
  8. bbc iplayer confirmed

There seems to be a few people confused about how this works, not sure if maybe they're unable to read back a few posts to find out or they're unable to ask Google or whatever, maybe aliens are interfering with their PCs so I'll explain it here. Go to http://bbc.co.uk/iplayer/ on the Wii's Internet Channel which is 500 Wii Points if you haven't downloaded it already. There is no update to anything, the BBC just seems to have changed the way iPlayer works behind the scenes if you access it with the Wii so that it works with the Wii's version of Flash. When you're using it it works just like the iPlayer through your PC or Mac or iPhone's web browser. As for TV Licenses. As far as I'm aware if you own any sort of TV, TV Card or Radio then you're supposed to pay for a TV License. Similarly, if you want to watch iPlayer then you should have a TV License. The BBC can't tell if you have a licence though when you're watching iPlayer. It all just depends on if you feel that watching iPlayer without a license is right or not. So, what does Mr Jackster think? Personally, I have no problem downloading stuff from commercial stations like Channel 4 or ITV or American stuff or movies for free because they'll have got all their money when they showed it on TV with adverts. But with the BBC it's different, they rely on you being honest I suppose and not watching their stuff if you didn't pay for it. I'm also wondering if it's fair, after all everyone else is paying what is essentially a TV Tax, and some people are kinda like claiming benefits (i.e. watching iPlayer) when they should really just be paying the Tax. Not the best comparison I know, but it kinda works. Anyway, do what you want, I forgot why I started writing this post already I just got lost in the moral argument. Personally I guess I think watching BBC stuff on iPlayer without paying a license fee is wrong but ultimately I don't care. I'm off to watch the X-Files movie, bye.
  9. k800i Software Buggered Up

You could try taking it to a Sony Ericsson service centre, I think most Carphone Warehouses are SE services centres. Dunno what they would do or how much it would cost but it's probably worth checking it out.
  10. Must Have Gadgets..

EeePC - definitely worth the money (the Linux one at least) Wii - Prossibly, later this year once we get a few more decent games and less mini game crap DS - Yeah sure why not, although the only thing I'm playing right now is Ace Attorney 3 and 4 (yes... both at the same time) iPod Touch - No, not worth it. I have one and I think I'd have been better getting an iPod Classic or maybe a Creative Zen. iPhone - Perhaps. I can say that while I myself wouldn't buy an iPhone, the web browser is great and the screen and input method works really well along with that unlimited data they give you. But £269 + minimum £35 a month is pretty expensive. N95 - It's an amazingly kick ass phone if you update to the latest firmware (any firmware version 12 or below sucks, update to version 20 or above and it's like a whole new phone, seriously). I wouldn't say it's good enough for the £399 price tag on Nokia's website, but I got mine for £200, and it's definitely worth that price. A future Nokia S60 Touch Screen Phone - Definitely! :-D I think the ultimate gadget will come out some time in the next 3 or 4 years. It'll be like Nokia's S60 in that developers will be allowed to develop anything for it and not be restricted like Apple restricts their developers on the iPhone. It'll have a nice touch interface like the iPhone and data prices will have dropped dramatically, so that even PAYG cutomers can browse the likes of Youtube without generating huge bills. Who knows, maybe we won't see it in the next 3 years, but we'll get there eventually. At least I hope we will.
  11. XP won't see my invisible network?

No idea why it's not working but uhh you could just turn SSID broadcasting on? I used to turn it off until I realised that if someone had taken the time to find out how to crack my WEP key, they could probably get round the lack of SSID and so it was just a pain in the arse for me to have the SSID broadcasting turned off.
  12. Broadband help.

You could get something like this http://netgear.co.uk/extra/wallplugged_range_extender_wgxb102.php I think the Apple Airport Express can do something similar.
  13. Will it harm my mouse...

Is it a AA battery? Or some other kind?
  14. Mobile Phone Chat

Something like the Nokia 6500 Slide maybe? http://www.mobile-review.com/review/nokia-6500slide-en.shtml
  15. Will it harm my mouse...

Don't hold me to this but as far as I know mAh is just the amount of charge the battery holds, not the amount it will supply at any one time. I think it's kinda like a tap and a water tank. You can have a tap connected to a 2 litre water tank, but then if you swap the 2 litre tank for a 2.5 litre tank but use the same tap then you'll be able to store more water but it'll be the same speed the water comes out at. So I don't *think* it will fry your mouse. I've used 2500mAh batteries in a digital camera and various other things and it didn't fry them. Although if it really matters that much maybe you should just get a more efficient mouse?
  16. Mobile Phone Chat

I have an N95. Best phone I've ever had. It let's me play ScummVM wherever I am, that's the coolest thing a phone can possibly do. A lot of people do free SDKs. And 'other software'? Like the other software the iPod Touch users had to pay £12.99 for despite the software already having been developed for the iPhone and already being fully compatible with the iPod Touch, essentially giving Apple infinite profit? I don't really care if you give a shit, it just annoys me when people on the Internet are wrong,
  17. Mobile Phone Chat

OK so basically Apple could just not host the apps for developers and not screen them for 'unsuitable content' and save themselves some cash and let developers take care of themselves. I'm sure the developers are big boys now. Maintenance and development costs of the platform? I thought costs like that were covered by the money people use to buy the devices. Then they also have a slice of you iPhone users' contracts going to them every month, that should be more than enough to continue development of the platform. And advertising of the service? I think the point of advertising a service is that the advertising pays for itself. I just thinks it's odd how you think Apple has to charge 30% to continue developing and maintaining the platform. Nokia, among many others, manage to let developers release their own software on their own terms and they seem to be doing ok. Hell, Nokia release firmware updates for free, just the other day I updated my N95 to v20, gave me a few nice little additions to my phone including a few backend changes, i.e. 'developing the platform'. I think it's clear the 30% is profit for Apple. Apple isn't a charity, they're just another big American corporation.
  18. Mobile Phone Chat

They don't do that on the Mac. Why? Because people would laugh at the Mac because it's such a fantastically horrible idea. Clearly the only reason Apple are doing this is because they can see that if they get 30% of the monies made, they'll be rolling in the cash. It's kinda like saying we should have a camera in every house so that the government can ensure no one's breaking the law. Sure it would cut down on crime but life wouldn't be as fun.

For once I'm with Jordan on this :-P The iPhone SDK thing all seems very nice and I'm happy for you guys to finally be able to use third party apps, but ultimately you've still not got a good open platform for other people to write programs for. Why? Let me explain. On the Nokia S60 phones (i.e. N series) and Windows Mobile phones, third party apps are pretty much allowed to come from anywhere and you can install whatever you want. The developers are allowed to make whatever apps they want using whatever compatible tools they want. Simple. The iPhone, however, is still limited with 3rd party apps. All the applications *have* to come through iTunes and be checked by Apple to ensure there's no 'unsuitable content' in there. All the applications also have to use Apple's libraries which is a pain, it just means that the likes of Firefox, KDE (not the whole desktop obviously), Second Life, ScummVM, Quake, Opera, Flash, Java etc. won't be able to be ported to the iPhone because they rely on their own custom libraries being available. Essentially, while opening things up a fair amount, Apple still have control over what goes onto an iPhone and what doesn't. It's a shame, I was looking forward to getting ScummVM on my iPod Touch. I guess I'll just have to stick to using it on my N95. ScummVM rules : peace:
  20. Ping. Some advice on internet connection

ok I think we have established the lower the ping the better. It sounds like your ping rate should have gone down, but the engineer may know things about the way he's done it that we don't, which may well have increased your ping times. You could check your ping time yourself, open a command line and run this (without quotes): 'ping www.google.co.uk' I usually get around 30ms to 40ms response time from Google, but unless you're getting something a lot higher than that, everything should be ok. It could be the engineer was just trying to sound smart by using scary technology words.
  21. Point & Click Games ***With Human Avatar***?

Check out 5 Days a Stranger, 7 Days a Sceptic, Trilby's Notes and 6 Days a Sacrifice. They make up the Chzo Mythos and they're really high good freeware point n click adventures with a good story, get em here: http://www.fullyramblomatic.com/5days/ http://www.fullyramblomatic.com/7days/ http://www.fullyramblomatic.com/notes/ http://www.fullyramblomatic.com/6days/ I actually found Trilby's Notes and 6 Days a Sacrifice pretty scary, it's pretty impressive how well the developer did them It might also be worth checking out the Phoenix Wright/Ace Attorney/Apollo Justice series on DS, as I played through them I began to realise they're actually somewhat similar to the classic point n click adventures.
  22. Nokia's New Concept - Morph

It'll be really cool when this sort of stuff becomes common. As Jordan says it'll be quite complicated but don't underestimate just how many intelligent people are working on this kind of technology. 2015 seems realistic.
  23. I think a lot of people would be surprised at how much they break copyright law :-(
  24. Toshiba Accepts Defeat to Blu-Ray

They only created one of the formats which BluRays use, VC-1. BluRay players also *have* to be able to playback H.264 and MPEG-2. In other news, there was a story a few days ago about the Bluray Disc Association saying that both Microsoft and Toshiba would be welcome to join the group.
  25. Whats the difference between 1080i and 1080p?

1080p is like *the ultimate*. In saying that, I've never had any sort of problem with 1080i and I do think it's superior to 720p even in games. That's just my opinion, however.
