  1. Advice on buying a new pc

Mesh have become teh sucky recently apparently, the quality has gone downhill and they almost never deliver when they say they will. Or so I've been told. Self-building for the win. ;-)
  2. Integrated graphics

Not that hard to find... http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?rb=17886939900&action=UFNQcm9kdWN0U2VhcmNoUmVzdWx0cw==&subcat_uid=265&order=ASC&order_col=sell_price&show=stock
  3. Integrated graphics

Wow a motherboard with no graphics slot.. and it's definitely not worth buying a PCI graphics card. If it were my PC, I would buy a decent Skt A motherboard and an AGP card for it, or just use it as an excuse to totally upgrade my system. I see you're getting a laptop, hope that's got a good gfx chip in it!
  4. Whats the best Antivirus program

    http://www.virus.gr/english/fullxml/default.asp?id=72&mnu=72 Look and weep.
  5. Integrated graphics

Yes. All motherboards made within the last few years will definitely have either an AGP slot or a PCI-E slot. Find out which one yours has.
  6. emulate windows xp 32 bit in x64 version

This is why it ain't worth buying XP 64.... many device drivers aren't available. Emulating Windows within Windows? Doubt thats possible tbh... if you're desperate either go back to 32 bit XP or try a dual-boot job (not sure how well that'd work though). The other option is Linux, there's well supported 64 bit distros such as Mandrake and you could use Wine for Windows stuff.
  7. Broadband solution, help!

Get a router like this http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0000E0YHF/qid=1143912924/sr=8-4/ref=sr_8_xs_ap_i4_xgl/203-1067459-2113527, Most routers have enough ports for 4 PC's. Run a 'huge ass' network cable (cat5 patch cable) from it to your PC. Don't forget to fit a microfilter into the phone socket so that you don't get cut off every time the phone rings.
  8. I was speaking in general terms. My ISP is Pipex and they have introduced capping recently, which means I will not be upgrading my service with them.
  9. convert files to divx

VirtualDub Mod is great for saving videos as different file types such as XviD or DivX. You'll need the encoders though, I ususally get them from the Klite Codec Pak. Google is your friend.
  10. Malware, malware, and more malware. Pfft. What I really want to see are upload speed upgrades and removal of download limits, which will benefit P2P users.
  11. 3D Mark scores

That's a pretty insane score. I haven't tried 06 yet but here's my 05 score: 3690 marks with Opteron 146 OC'd (from 2ghz up to 2.7ghz), and Radeon x700 Pro OC'd (GPU: from 425mhz to 459mhz, and VRAM: from 864mhz to 958mhz). That's using the latest ATI cats, and my PC has been OC'd carefully to be fully stable in Prime95.
  12. Mobile Phone Help Needed

Stay away from motorolas, their software is slow the buttons are crap too. I've been told that Sony Ericssons are the best performance wise.
  13. Computer Is Seriously Messed Up!

When PC is off but PSU on, try touching the two power button pins with a screwdriver or some other metal object, which acts the same was as an on button. Or when the PC is on try doing the same with the reset button's pins. The LED lights don't actually matter, they don't need to be connected for the PC to work.
  14. Computer Is Seriously Messed Up!

Hmm, a stab in the dark but... try disconnecting the hard disk.
  15. Computer Is Seriously Messed Up!

Is the CPU seated correctly? Heatsink attached properly? Fan spinning up? All power cables pushed in? If those are all okay, it may be a motherboard problem or something. I'm really running out of ideas..
  16. Computer Is Seriously Messed Up!

Does it get to the POST screen? Do you hear any beeps?
  17. Video card advice needed..

Ok, I can tell you that gfx chip is ancient, and I'm assuming the PC is fairly old too. If you're going to get a new PC, I'd reccommend steering clear of the likes of PC World and other electrical stores because they're often overprice or offer poor service. (I did work experience at Comet and shuddered as I was told to install Norton on a customer's messed up laptop, after cracking into the admin account. PCW and Dixons, etc would probably just reformat, lazy gits). I find that small highstreet PC stores often have more knowledgeable employees and will not try to flog any old rubbish to you. Just to give you an idea of the sort of specification to look for: http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/pcrange.html?MTE Notice the "GeForce 6600GT 256Mb PCI Express", that's great gfx card for a (relatively) inexpensive system.
  18. Video card advice needed..

Start > Run > dxdiag > Ok > Display Tell me the Name/Chip Type from there. Also an idea of your budget for a new gfx card would be handy...
  19. Raid configuration

I've been told raid 5 is supposed to be the best, but it's probably a bit over-the-top for most people. Out of the other two, for reliability and data safety choose raid 1, but for speed and performance, choose raid 0.
  20. Video card advice needed..

Umm, where did you get 21.9mb from? You can't just "tinker" with a gfx card to magically increase its memory. I assume you need 32mb to be able to play a certain game? Most new decent gfx cards are 256mb+ now. Any reccommendations I give depend on your buget though...
  21. Laptop processor/HD temperatures

Athlons can handle high temps quite well tbh, but unlike P4's they don't cut out if the temp gets too high (e.g. if the heatsink fell off an athlon would fry). As for HDD temps, below 40c is good for desktops, but they should run fine at around 44c. Laptop HDD's are low rpm though, so theoretically they should run cooler. Best thing to do might be to get a notebook cooler, as it'll keep your knees from being toasted too. ;-)
  22. Pc upgrades?

Bogbas - Did you click the link in my previous posts? All those 1-way Opterons are Skt 939 and fully compatible with any Skt 939 motherboard. They are not just server chips, they are ideal for overclockers because of their low temperatures and voltage tolerance. Also, they will perform better due to having a 1mb L2 cache instead of just 512kb (which most Athlon64 San Diego's have IIRC). I would also advise against stock AMD heatsink fans because they are high rpm and so often have noisey bearings. I was on about the budget memory... I'm just saying the dual channel memory will perform better than a single 1gb module, as long as the motherboard does dual channel. Anyway, I'm just slightly obsessive with opteron overclocking, but for the normal gamer an X2 probably is the best option anyway.
  23. Pc upgrades?

Instead of the Athlon64, get an AMD Opteron (they are still skt 939) from scan.co.uk and get a zalman copper heatsink too. http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Products.ASP?CatID=11&FilterCategories=252&Thumbnails=yes If you're after dual-core, choose one with a Denmark Core instead of Venus. For the memory, I'd go for Corsair 2x512mb (dual channel).
  24. "Subscribers to Microsoft's Volume Licensing Program will be able to get the code in November 2006" So I'm sure it will be 'available' before then. ;-)
  25. Restrain me from smashing my router

To be honest it's really overrated. I actually have the non-wireless version of that Netgear router and it's fantastic. I shudder to think how unstable my net connection would be right now without 15 metres of cable between my rig and the r00ter.
