Thanks for the suggestion, but it would be the 50hz PAL version (which I've had before) and I also want to leave the Wii Virtual Console behind now. I'm hoping when Link to the Past next becomes available, it will at least be the 60hz version (which I think would happen on the 3DS) or 60hz and HD, which might happen on the Wii U. I do want to build up a big SNES collection, but only on the 3DS or Wii U.
Oh yeah, I forgot that the UK Wii VC was 50hz only. Fair point.
Well... NOUK didn't deny 60hz support on Wii U VC when I emailed them at least! So there's at least some hope! (running the 2D games in Hd res will do absolutely nothing though - they'll just look identical to how they look on Wii)

WTF!? Another one!? (And a proper one this time!!! )
This has to be focused around EU release dates. So far absolutely nothing is scheduled with a proper release date other than Layton Mask of Miracles this month.
I expect release dates for Paper Mario SS, Devilishly Difficult Brain Training, Fire Emblem Awakening, Style Savvi/Style Boutique and CrossworDS Plus and maybe a few eShop titles (including Hana Samurai and Nano Assault EX)
I don't expect anything actually new to be announced (especially if it's for EU only)
Man! Nintendo Direct and Red Dwarf X on the same day!? MY BODY IS NOT READY FOR ALL THE AWESOME!!!

Oh wow, the Gold Rush pack is ridiculous! Got 30,000 on my first try. You really will rack up a million coins in no time with this one
I haven't managed to beat the first level of the Nerve Wracking Pack yet! (It really does deserve all 5 difficulty stars! )
Can't help myself from trying to go for the Gold Flower in the first level Has anyone managed to beat the level while also nabbing the flower yet?
-
Only tried the Coin Challenge pack so far, but it's fun. I like how it has a different focus in its level design than the levels in the main game. Gives me a nice SMA4 vibe Also nice to see the fat hammer bros return from SMB3/NSMB Wii - Good to see that the new levels also have new enemies/mechanics to play with
Will try the other two packs later (looking forward to giving the Nerve Wracking Pack a shot on my work commute!)
-
Ok got my message. Annoying to see that they offer absolutely no discount for buying the 3 pack set Would've been perfect to see that go for £5
Ahh well, the shop music is nice at least
-
We're getting screwed on the price though. £6 for all three
Talk about a price hike! £2 per pack!? It's like Theatrhythm (US and EU got the DLC songs cheaper than Japan did) but in reverse
-
WTF!? Why haven't I got my Spotpass notification yet!?
Spot Pass feature unlock is kinda interesting...Does kinda make me worry about what might happen if someone buys the game down the line and they're not sending out the notification any more. How else is someone meant to access the ingame store?
Edit: Oh never mind, apparently they said that if you haven't played in a long time, it will take longer to receive the message for the packs... I suppose the Spotpass message is pinged from the server when you play the game and it prepares a data package with your total coin count to be sent to Nintendo. I suppose that means that the Spotpass message will continue to get sent automatically and indefinitely so long as the 3DS online service continues to run (which is presumably forever)

Timesplitters 2 HD
We had a “HD” downloadable version of TimeSplitters 2 in development at Free Radical in 2008. I don’t know what happened to that but yes, I’d love to see it released at some point. Maybe it could be the catalyst that is required in order to raise enough interest in TimeSplitters 4 that a publisher might want to fund it.Confirmation that JFG GBC had nothing to do with Rare
There were many leaked photos back in 2010 of a Jet Force Gemini beta/prototype for Game Boy ColorCan you share any information on whether this game actually exists, how far along it was in development (completion), the type of gameplay it had, and why it got cancelled?
Martin Wakeley: JFG on the Gameboy was the only occasion I can remember Rare outsourcing anything. It was being done by Bits Studios and was nearly done last time I saw it, I’m not sure what happened to it.
The fabled Timber 64 never existed
There was a rumor that Timber 64 was a game Rare was developing during the N64 days. Basically, the rumor was that Timber from Diddy Kong Racing would get his own game just like Banjo and Conker did. Pipsy and Bumper would co-star in Timber 64.Can you or Lee provide any details on this rumor? It’s interesting because Diddy Kong Racing takes place on Timber Island so it seemed that Rare really liked the Timber character.
Martin Wakeley says: I couldn’t say for definite but I have no recollection of that ever being in development. Where the rumour may have started is that an early version of DKR (I think it was called RC Pro Am at the time) had Timber as the lead character. I’m sure I’ve got a badly fitting Nylon polo shirt with the game logo on it somewhere.
Lee Musgrave says: There was never a Timber 64 game. Yes, there was Pro-Am64 that had Timber as the main character, but that became Diddy Kong Racing and that was the end of that.
Donkey Kong Racing (and the revelation that it did get to a playable state, beyond that CGI video!)
Donkey Kong Racing (GameCube) is kind of shrouded in mystery, and Donnchadh (Don) Murphy told us in an interview that you were the right person to clear up questions because you lead the project. The only time we saw video footage of DKR was a prerendered CGI video at E3 2001, and then the game later turned into Sabreman Stampede. Was there ever an existing playable prototype of Donkey Kong Racing, and why was the game cancelled so quickly? Also, can you provide some insight on how the gameplay, level design, and animal racing would have been like if Donkey Kong Racing had been made?Lee Musgrave: Ha! – yes, I made that video! . . . Donkey Kong Racing was obviously pretty heavily tied to Nintendo as a franchise, and as Rare approached the finalization of a buyout deal with Microsoft it was clear that the game had no future, at least with the ape’s as characters. We switched it around to be a Sabreman game, and there was a great early Xbox prototype – but someone, somewhere decreed that it was a little too old-school for the kind of ‘revolutionary gaming experiences’ that the Xbox was capable of delivering, and so it started down a path of meandering changes, updates and ‘evolution’ that finally saw it run out of steam and fall over. There were some great ideas in the game as it developed though, and I still look back to the early racing game design and think we could have done something great with that.
On Donkey Kong Racing’s gameplay:
It was a pure racing game, the underlying software mechanics were actually based on car physics, but it also incorporated the idea of riders jumping between different animals mid-race, to always be riding the ones that were bigger or faster . . . we had some awesome gameplay in place, and it was lots of fun – we even had a multiplayer version working – and when you fell off, you had to tap-tap-tap (HyperSports style) to run on foot and catch up with an animal. Fun, but it lost some appeal without the DK universe around it, and Microsoft were unsure of its potential with Xbox gamers I think.
So it's possible that someone may have a prototype to share after all!
The reason why we haven't seen any more past Rare games on XBLA
Rare outsourced some of the conversion/development of Banjo Kazooie for Xbox Live Arcade, and it was kind of a test case for us to see what could be achieved in terms of developing with a partner, keeping our costs low and making some revenue. You can make your own conclusions as to how that turned out by the fact that we didn’t move on to any of the other games you mention. We came close to firing off a conversion of Killer Instinct a few times, but there were licensing obstacles to that, and it never really had enough perceived interest to push it forward. Oh, and of course, there was Goldene . . .There's plenty more goodness in the interview, including some anecdotes from their days at Nintendo that I'm sure you guys would love!
Oh and as an added bonus, have some beta footage of Kameo for Xbox on me! (Courtesy of ptoponline/Borman!) Enjoy!
The unfinished ending to Kameo Xbox...

@Dcubed, your next mission, should you choose to accept it is to track down some details and footage of the fabled Timber platform game Rare had in development.
Heh, funny you should mention that. An interview that was just released revealed that it was actually never in development

Surprised that Punchout, Rhythm Heaven Fever and Fire Emblem RD scored so low! Thought they'd be up much higher.
Nice to see that Rabbids Go Home made it onto the list

Well said. LA is one of my favourites in the series and it's partially because it's so compact. It has a tighter focus on each individual moment than any other game in the series and features some of the most brilliant level designs in the series!
At times it feels like a parody of Zelda, while feeling like a perfect personification of what Zelda is all about at the same time.
A truly timeless classic and one of the most touching games in the series
As for the DX extras, I like them - but I think they're best experienced only after you've played the game normally as in the original B&W version. It's fun seeking out the extra stuff and messing round with them, even if the colour dungeon tunics arguably break the balance of the game (though in a fun way for S&Gs )
That being said, it's only really Twilight Princess that has ridiculously huge dungeons. The other games in the series (including the DS Zeldas and Skyward Sword) feature much shorter dungeons.

I'm just going Zelda-crazy at the moment. Completed:
Ocarina of Time 3D
Legend of Zelda
Zelda II
Minish Cap
Link's Awakening (review on Retro Board)
I really want Link to the Past and the Oracle games! Will buy them immediately if they become available on the eShop!
Why not just get ALTTP on the Wii? (You have one don't you?)
-
I bet that they changed the words in order to not have to do separate recordings for each and every supported language. Bit of a shame, but understandable (especially when you consider that they're releasing the game just 4 months after Japan)
-
Is it me or are Nintendo not really doing much to hype this game up? I haven't seen any TV ads yet and their online efforts aren't nearly as strong as they were for B&W, hell we still haven't even had a decent proper English trailer! (And no, that cheap and shoddily made 1 minute crapfest doesn't count)
Have I missed something?

Generally speaking, most newer (quality) sets will have 3D as a simple bullet point feature - so you're not getting a better 2D picture by avoiding a 3D capable set.
I'm assuming that input lag is a big factor for you... in which case, you're not gonna find a lot of newer LCD sets that have low input lag without resorting to the absolutely ghastly looking "Game Mode" that most sets come with...
If you're after a Plasma set, then you've got a bigger choice of low latency sets (and as luck would have it, that's a sticking point that Panasonic are generally good with - so you may wish to look up their sets)
Me personally, I prefer LCD (ugh, phosphor trails...) and given that all I wanted was a TV that delivered on great image quality and low latency (didnt give a toss about the TV's sound quality or streaming tech - as my Reciever handles all that anyway) it was the best choice for me. Your requirements may vary, but I'm assuming that we're looking for similar things here.
Generally speaking, best thing to do is define a set of features it absolutely MUST have (low latency, certain number of HDMI inputs etc) and draw up a short-list - then go to town on doing research on each of them.
-
I didn't even realise Samsung were even considered to be "up there" with the likes of Panasonic and Pioneer in terms of quality (but the go-to brand for cheap TVs). Things must have changed in the last year.
One thing I do have to say about Panasonic: I don't know how they do it, but quality BBC iPlayer app is magnificent. If I watch the iPlayer on my PC it looks dreadful and blocky and pixellated, yet it looks amazing on the app installed in my Panasonic.
Oh yeah, Samsung do great LCDs - their plasmas are generally average though (Right now, Panasonic are the go to brand for Plasmas)
Though there's obviously much more to TV choice than just going by the popular brand...
-
If you can still find it, go for the Samsung D5000. I just bought the 40" version a month or so ago and it is a cracking set! (You'll also be glad to know that it has less than 16ms input lag - making it the LCD TV with the lowest input lag out there currently)
Here's a review from HDTV Test...
http://www.hdtvtest.co.uk/news/samsung-ue32d5000-ue40d5000-201112121567.htm
Picture quality is stunning after calibration (blacks look truly black!) and it also does a brilliant job of upscaling a Wii image (without introducing any input lag at all!) It's a bit feature light, but if you value image quality and game performance over App support, fancy streaming features and 3D, you can't go wrong! : peace:

Yep. It lost its way and ended up somewhere absolutely wonderful. Seriously. Resident Evil 4 absolutely shits on the previous three in terms of enjoyment factor. And RE5 was pretty conserved, passing on most of what made RE4 great and adding awesome co-op.
No idea why people clamour for the style of the first 3 games. Ok, the survival horror format was entertaining, but the gameplay was pretty ridiculous. Gathering up random objects of the floor and constantly backtracking to the room where you're supposed to use it as well as awkward movement mechanics, terrible voice acting and annoying door loading.
I think it's a case of rose-tinted glasses if you think the series has got worse, tbh.
RE5 can only dream of being anywhere near half as good as RE4. It has the outer shell of its predecessor, but the inside is completely hollow.
For all that RE4 did to the series, it actually still clung on to being survival horror (albeit in a different way - focusing on creating fear through tension and horrifying set-pieces, rather than the jump shock scares and disturbing stories that defined the past games). RE5 was a pure action game, done using the same mechanics as RE4 and didn't even try to be a survival horror (not to mention was designed basically as a long set of linear Mercenaries maps strung together, rather than an interconnected world)
RE6 however is an outright disaster in every respect. Forget how it compares to past RE games, it's just a bad action game - end of (even when compared to the games it's cloning!). It's the RE series' Final Fantasy 13.

Cake time (as it's all I ever make).
Today I made small coffee sponges.
With coffee buttercream and a sweet coffee icing on top.
The problem I've always found with coffee cakes in general is they never really taste much like coffee and they ALWAYS have walnuts in / on. WHY DAMN YOU?!
So I made my own - less the walnuts. And with lots of coffee!
Those look delicious! BTW, you're spot on. Hate it when they add nuts to coffee cake. WHYYYYYYYY?!?!?!
BTW: Made my first homemade Katsu Curry tonight, turned out pretty well! (Sorry there are no pics though, didn't even know this thread was here and it was too yummy to hold off eating!)
I think it might've been better if I placed the curry sauce below the breaded chicken though (having it absorb the sauce takes away from that nice crunchiness. Should've thought about that before mixing it together lol!)
-
A perfect ending all in all. Touching and bitter sweet - with some beautiful time travel/space time continuum screwey uppery (resulting in a brilliant double set of twists at the end that stand as some of the series' best!)
Nothing like a good Moffat episode!

Embarrassing confession: I've never played a mainline Pokemon game
I'm thinking of giving Heart Gold/Soul Silver a try.. Or would Black/White1 be a good place to start? Advice appreciated.
Black & White are probably your best bet. As Serebii rightfully pointed out, it's a clean break from the past and is designed to be experienced as a self contained game (you can't even see any of the old Pokemon or communicate with the older games until you've finished the main story)
Alternatively you could play the original Red/Blue/Yellow or better still, its GBA remake - Fire Red/Leaf Green.
The other games were all designed with the idea that you've played some of the past games, though they're all easy enough to get into. They always do a great job of easing in newcomers - even though you'll get the most out of them once you've played some of the earlier ones since there's a lot of references and little nods to past games (Gold&Silver/Heart Gold & Soul Silver, does this particularly well!)
-
TBH it did look a bit suspicious how they only ever showed co-op play...
Wouldn't it have made much more sense to have you play as Rayman and have Murthy being the one who was AI controlled?
This sounds like a game killer. Trust Ubisoft to fuck up a great concept in one fell swoop yet again...
or maybe not! Going by Nintendo Power's latest hands on it seems that they've changed how it works...
Though Rayman Legends is intended for -and best enjoyed with- a bunch of friends sitting on the sofa, it does offer the option to play solo. In that case, you'll spend the vast majority of your time controlling Rayman or one of the other platforming heroes, and when you get to a section that requires Murfy's assistance, you'll temporarily switch to him while the AI takes the reins of your other character. We've yet to try this for ourselves, but the developers promise the AI will perform flawlessly to avoid frustration.Crisis averted? Seems so!

Those new levels look great! Nice to see one that takes more advantage of the Mega Mushroom too!
Here's hoping we get some levels that better exploit the mini mushroom and the Raccoon Leaf!
Price is also very reasonable too (Roughly £1.50 for 3 levels)
Edit: Oh hey I just realised something! That difficulty rating they give is actually a throwback to Super Mario Advance 4!
Nice touch!

The Nigoro games you find do have beneficial effects later on. If you combine them with other games, you get various stat boosts.
