  1. Thought I might as well use this thread too as I'm looking into getting a new HDTV for when the Wii U comes out. Until now I've used my 22" PC monitor for my Xbox 360, and a crappy old 19" for the Wii.

This Samsung is top of the best sellers list on Amazon. Can anyone see anything wrong with this TV, or would it be a good budget HDTV to have for my Xbox 360 and future Wii U? And if it's bad, what are my best options with a limited budget?

Based on a quick search, it seems alright. Input lag is around 33ms supposedly (a good result by industry standards and shouldn't be too noticable - Game Mode supposedly does nothing in this set so just leave it off)

There are some issues with backlight bleed and screen uniformity though - meaning that black levels aren't the best and will appear slightly blue-ish)

    Pic from AVS to demonstrate...

    LL

Also be warned that there are multiple panel types for this TV, with some being better than others (The Samsung S-PVA Panel is supposedly the best one and can be identified by a version number on the box that goes something like T203 - or some other number that follows; so long as it has T, you're fine). If you really care a lot about the image quality, you might want to try and ask what code it has on the box...

    Txxx means Samsung S-PVA Panel

    Axxx means AUO A-MVA Panel

    Bxxx/Cxxx means CMO S-MVA Panel

Hxxx means Sharp Panel (This is supposedly the bad one - avoid it)

Colour reproduction and motion handling are good, at least with the non Sharp ones, so it should look fine in normal circumstances (i.e, not in dark scenes)

For that price, it's not a bad set. As long as you're not expecting the world with it, go for it :)

  2. I see all of the reviews are starting to pour in. I expect many 8's and 9's.

Given all the events that have happened recently...

And the storied history of the mainstream gaming media's journalistic "integrity", you'd be a fool to trust any Halo 4 review (or indeed any review of a major title)

  3. Some bad news...

    http://www.siliconera.com/2012/10/26/monster-hunter-3-ultimate-wont-let-you-play-on-the-wii-u-gamepad-screen/

We also asked if the Wii U version of Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate would support the option to play the game on the Wii U GamePad’s screen, rather than the television, and unfortunately, it will not. The Wii U version does, however, allow you to rearrange your UI on the GamePad, just like the bottom screen in the Nintendo 3DS version.

    And some good news!

We got in touch with Capcom USA to ask if download quests will be made available for the western release of Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate as well, and the good news is that they will.

    http://www.joystiq.com/2012/10/31/monster-hunter-3-ultimate-and-the-hunting-party/

The Wii U's 1080p graphics offered lush environments with better use of lighting. You could see more vibrant separations between colors. Textures were more richly defined and I could see every fiber on the Zinogre's crystallized back. It also appeared that the game was running at a constant 60 frames per second, which the PR rep verified.

    :D

BTW if anyone is wondering, the 3DS version runs at a variable 60FPS (in both 2D and S3D - the 3D has no impact on the framerate)

  4. Ok I got it! This is the best HD Remaster that has been released so far by far. Full 1080p, visuals seem to be perfectly intact, no glitches (the ink effect and the parchment filter look just as they should do) all the 2D elements have been properly re-drawn and not a bit of slowdown. The loading times are also substantially improved over the PS2 original (menu now features no loading lag at all :D)

Buy this if you want to show others a message about how it should be done (it's especially impressive in the wake of the disappointing Nights and ZOE HD Re-masters!)

I haven't tried out the Move controls yet, but I'll update when I get some of the brush powers to try out!

Edit: Ok, just gave them a go... The drawing recognition seems to work fine, but there are a couple of problems...

Firstly, the Move loses calibration very easily and annoyingly often, making repositioning a pain. Secondly, You lose camera control. Unless you are a master of the Monster Hunter Claw (camera controls are mapped to the D-pad on the DS3 controller), you aren't going to be controlling the camera - and in a game like Okami, where the auto camera controls aren't the best, that's a big problem.

Most importantly (and this comes as a surprise from someone who hasn't played Okami Wii), the motion controls don't actually make the game any more fun. That's a real shocker to me! I would've imagined that the extra speed and precision that you get would make combat more enjoyable, but I find that the impact it ultimately has is really very minimal.

Give it a go if you have one lying around, but don't buy a Move just for this game (do that for HOTD4 instead, like I did!)

  5. Not a great trailer really. Makes the game look kinda boring.

That being said, it at least looks like they've reduced the health of the normal enemies (no more having 20 whip hits to kill a skeleton!), so that's good to see - assuming that it's not just a matter of the way the trailer is cut.

  6. Starting to wonder why people are so eager to support Nicalis, they've always had bad support for Europe (massive delays or not releasing at all) and they always seem to have massive bugs in their games (bonus of our release being delayed means we have the bugs fixed.

Because despite their ineptitude as a publisher (and their generally poor bug checking/fixing process), they eventually put out fantastic products. Their ports are very good, they pick great games to port and their own Nightsky game is supposedly pretty damn awesome too!

  7. FINALLY! They've been silent for far too long (outside of their re-releases)

I just hope that it's a new IP. As great as their output has been, they've been relying on sequels for far too long.

I wanna see what craziness they can conjure using the touch, dual screens and 3D of the 3DS! :D

A touch controlled vertical shmup would be freaking awesome! (With 2D graphics and gameplay on the bottom screen and then having depth factoring into the gameplay when the craft goes onto the top screen - ALA Xevious)

If not something like my idea, then something that will completely blindside me out of nowhere please!

  8. No reason to believe that it won't come eventually. The mainline series is seemingly safe (DQ10 admittedly is a bit of is question mark - though I reckon that they're waiting for the Wii U version to be finished) and in a worst case scenario, this game already has a full English localisation that they can just re-use.

It's the spinoffs that have suspect chances of being brought over (Rocket Slime 3 :()

  9. I've heard that ZOE is considerably better on the 360 as the PS3 version looks rather washed out and suffers from serious frame rate issues.

To be honest I find it mind boggling that HD collections have these problems - but saying that ZOE HD Collection was put together by High Voltage Software...

I thought the inclusion of Snake in Smash Bros would have meant that Nintendo got something back. Even a version of Twin Snakes on the Wii with the first person shooting mechanic being mapped to Wii Remote aiming would've been nice. But instead - nothing!

They're both pretty shite. TBH, ZOE2 would've always have been a very challenging port, just due to the way the game was originally made, so it's not fully HVS's fault. PS2 has more memory bandwidth than PS3 and 360, relative to its resolution, meaning that any game that features tons of particle effects and transparencies would suffer heavily on the HD twins (and ZOE2 just so happens to be the worst case scenario for this)

Ironically, the Wii U is probably the only console out there that could actually handle ZOE2 in HD, but don't tell Koji Pro that ;)

  10. So will Disney now own:

    - Star Wars

    - Indiana Jones

    - The Land Before Time

    - Labyrinth

    - Monkey Island

    - Grim Fandango

    - Manic Mansion

    - Loom

    And various other stuff?

    tumblr_m99mb002eU1qb9fuc.gif

That's just fucking terrifying! The sheer force of that portfolio combined with everything else they own (Disney, Touchstone, ESPN, Marvel) is just insane!

It's like an unstoppable black hole of doom! How long until they buy Paramount?!

Pixar and ILM under one roof!? HOLY SHITBALLS!

Also, Disney just handed Square Enix an extra 3 million sales for Kingdom Hearts 3! :o

  11. I was the same. I didn't really watch any until I was 15 and then I was just "meh". It was all just predictable. It's an enjoyable franchise, but it's not the best of the best.

I call it "Sci-Fi" for the masses

Well, it's more fantasy than Sci-Fi really and it defined a huge chunk of the clichés that persist today.

The original trilogy was series of fantastically written fantasy movies, with wonderfully memorable characters and vivid lore, in Sci-Fi clothing. The Prequel Trilogy was Sci-Fi CGI porn pretending to be Star Wars (and failing miserably)

Disney do fantasy very well and I reckon it could lead to a great set of movies with George being as far away from it as possible. I'll be watching them with an open mind and a clear set of expectations.

The whole concept of Disney owning the entire Lucasfilm/Lucasarts portfolio just blows my fucking mind though!! (And for a measly $4 billion to boot! Thought that Lucasfilm would be worth way more than that!!!)

  12. l I don't know. if they made this with completely new characters with slight throwbacks to the originals( I'm talking planet references) then it has a good chance, but if they have a CGI'd elderly Luke Skywalker training someone or some shit I will puke my ring.

we all know george's problem was he had too much power and was surrounded by too many "yes" people that were afraid to challenge him whenever he made stupid decisions( you know like the entire episode of 2)

With new younger blood this could be awesome but this NEEDS to be live action.

Either way it will be clearly distinguished from the original Star Wars so I'm ok with this.

More importantly, the series (and Indiana Jones) is finally safe from George's clutches!!! We won!

Also Disney have a significant foothold in the Gaming industry once again, now that they own Lucasarts!

Proper re-releases of the original Star Wars movies and Lucasarts games!? HELL FUCKING YES!!! :bouncy:

  13. It'll almost certainly happen. Ubisoft and Nintendo are butt buddies. They'll give the Wii U ports of anything that can feasibly be put onto the system.

It will all be in vain if GTAV isn't coming over.

    Don't hold your breath...

    NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

Rockstar Games, a publishing label of Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc. (TTWO), is very proud to announce that Grand Theft Auto V is expected to launch worldwide during spring 2013 for the PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system and the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft.

Developed by series creator Rockstar North, Grand Theft Auto V is the largest and most ambitious title in the series to date. Set in the sprawling city of Los Santos and the surrounding area, Grand Theft Auto V delivers a world of unprecedented scale and detail bursting with life, from mountaintops to the depths of the ocean.

"Grand Theft Auto V builds on everything we've learned about open world game design," said Sam Houser, Founder of Rockstar Games. "We can’t wait to share it with fans."

Beginning November 5, 2012, Grand Theft Auto V will be available for pre-order in stores everywhere. For all other information and updates on Grand Theft Auto V including the latest trailers, please visit http://www.rockstargames.com/V/.

So long as the Houser Brothers maintain full control over the mainline series, it'll never hit a Nintendo home console...

While we're at that, EA have already made it clear that they'll never give Nintendo any proper support for Wii U (after the Fifa 12.5 and Mass Effect Trilogy/Origin rejection debacles) and Take Two as a wider entity are coy to give Nintendo any real support (so don't expect Bioshock Infinite)

On the plus side, Activision are at least throwing their full weight behind the platform; so that's something to be thankful for - while the rest of the smaller western publishers don't seem to have any major beef with Nintendo - so most other titles should rightfully come...

Japanese support (outside of Kojima Productions) should be in the bag though :awesome:

  14. Quote:

Coin Battle: Up to five players can play together and compete to see who can collect the most coins. One player will use the Wii U GamePad controller while the other four players use the Wii Remote controller. The player using the Wii U GamePad controller in Boost Mode can place Boost Blocks to help grab hard-to-reach coins. Players can also use the GamePad to edit and customize the coin layout in courses found only in Coin Battle. The coin layout can then be saved and played by the players using Wii Remote controllers.

OH MY GOD YES!!! I freaking LOVE the coin battle mode in NSMB Wii! (And that's a GODLY use of the Gamepad!). DO WANT!!! :D

There's more info here as well... http://www.gamexplain.com/article-885-1351616454-new-super-mario-bros-u---bulletpoint-preview.html

BTW, the more I hear about this game, the more I think that they should've called it New Super Mario World.

  15. Several leaps into the air and speedy circuits of the dining room!

If this is legitimate, I consider this to be the best 3DS announcement ever! DQ VIII was the first to be released in Europe, so I've always wanted to play this. And Dragon Quest is so immersive, it's the one series I prefer to be fully 3D, although the overhead-view games do have charm. I love them all, basically! The idea of exploring VII's world with a similar immersion to VIII's... :o

Let's hope they use this engine for remakes of I-III as well. And quite honestly, IV-VI wouldn't go amiss! Same goes for IX - what the heck, I'll spend 800 more hours on it! I do love VIII most of all and would love to step into that world again on handheld, but I'm just a little bit doubtful ogf how much it'd shine on the lower-than-PS2 resolution 3DS.

    Great news!

Just think how vast that DQ8 landscape would look in 3D...

  16. That scan looks too good to be a fake and the game has been rumoured to be in development for ages (the original leak came over a year ago!)

I say it's real. It would've had plenty of time in development and was probably pushed back in order to not compete with DQX Wii.

Besides, even without that original leak, it was blatantly obvious that it would come to 3DS eventually - given that every previous DQ game has come to handhelds (and in order even!)

The big question however is whether or not it'll finally see a release in Europe for the first time ever...

  17. Octopus Dance looks a bit meh, Yoshi's Fruit Cart COULD be interesting but F-Zero looks awesome. Shame it can't be controlled via analogue stick

Zelda's controls still bug me...pushing the right stick down to aim...I so hope there's another option

I agree with you on the 3 new games (the tunnels blocking the Gamepad view in Twister Race is a stroke of genius!) but if you think about the way the Gamepad is being held, the decision to have the craft controlled by tilt the best choice as the analog sticks would be too awkward to use in that position (and Stylus touch controls would obscure your view of the map)

They could always have you hold the Gamepad in its normal position I guess, but that would mean that you wouldn't be able to see as much of the map as you would do in landscape mode (and that is the main point of the Gamepad in this game...)

Octopus Dance looks too basic to have much lasting value though (even though I think it's a cool use of the Gamepad)

I wonder how each of these games incorporate co-op play...

BTW, I really like this trend of seeing Wii U games offering different perspectives of the game. That's something that they didn't do as much as I would've liked on the DS.

  18. Finally got a chance to catch up with last week's episode (Entangled). Great stuff! much better than Lemons (which felt rather forced all round to me and featured a plot that ran its course less than halfway through).

I love how this episode brings back more of the sci-fi wacky concepts from some of the later episodes, as I felt that this series was a bit lacking in those thus far.

My only real complaint is that the professor's ending was very much contrived - even for the series' standard (just read it to yourself on paper and you'll see how utterly absurd it is). Felt like it would be more at home on Father Ted than Red Dwarf ::shrug:

Other than that, great stuff! : peace:

    - When the alien dudes choke on whatever (was that even explained?), and then Listers says to Kryton and Cat 'so you two are connected somehow?'... 'so you killed them?'... I didn't really understand why he's come to that conclusion.

It was all rather coincidental, wasn't it ;)

  19. You know your child is going to grow up to become a Nintendo fan when you give him a name like Triforce.

He actually changed his legal name himself as an adult.

He's completely nuts. I'm surprised that Nintendo still allow him to be associated with their brand - he's poisonous, speaking from a PR perspective (I would've thought that they'd try and distance themselves from him publicly)
