  1. Nice read, thanks! I've only had a short abortive play of the original through unofficial channels. I'd love it if they put it out it on the eshop so we can complete it before Pirate's Curse.

They're looking to do that now. It has an ESRB rating and has already been submitted to Nintendo so it should be coming out in the US shortly.

Of course we still have to wait for our rating though... (Oh and we already have an import GB game on our VC service, Sword of Hope 2, so that's not a problem at least :) )

  2. NSMBU = 2GB

    Nintendo Land = 3.2GB

List of JPN retail titles on the eShop at launch...

    Launch:

    Orochi 2 Hyper (Dec 8th) ¥6,300

    FIFA '13 (Dec 8th) ¥7,655

Batman: Arkham City Armoured Edition (Dec 8th) ¥5,480

    Ninja Gaiden 3 Razor's Edge (Dec 8th) ¥6,300

    Tekken Tag Tournament 2 (Dec 8th) ¥6,280

    Zombi U (Dec 8th) ¥6,300

    Assassin's Creed III (Dec 8th) ¥6,930

    Nintendo Land (Dec 8th) ¥4,935

New Super Mario Bros. U (Dec 8th) ¥5,985

    Post-Launch

Romance of the Three Kingdoms 12 (Dec 13th) ¥8,000

    Sports Connection (Dec 20th) ¥4,200

Simple Series for Wii U Vol. 1 (Dec 20th) ¥2,940

Those two games are bigger than I expected them to be! (NSMBU is about 5 times larger than NSMB Wii in terms of file size)

Interestingly, it says that more than 2GB/3.2GB is required to download each respective game. I hope that doesn't mean that they're doing the same stupid thing as PS3 and requiring double the amount of space for the installation process (though I guess that could just be referring to the need to have free space available for the save file as well...)

  3. Yeah I'm really interested to see what Nintendo offers in terms of TV functionality and TVii.

Would be good if you can control the gamepad to do the TV stuff without needing the main console on. Need some clarification :)

That you CAN do at least :)

    http://uk.ign.com/articles/2012/11/08/what-were-learning-about-wii-u

It's possible to access your Wii U without even turning on the TV. The power button on the GamePad will enable the system, and allows you to access content without touching your TV. The best part - the TV Remote integration will let you then turn on the TV through the Pad itself. Pretty awesome.

But wait, there's more. You can also access the GamePad and turn on your Wii U through the controller's touch screen. Right within the remote interface is a button that says 'Play Wii U' - touch that, and your system turns on. Of course, you can also press the power button on the system itself - kind of how we've been doing it for decades.

  4. As many of us know, setting up a universal remote is usually a nightmare of inputting long codes until you finally stumble upon the one that works. With Wii U, all you have to do is select your box’s manufacturer (which is likely emblazoned just under the screen) and the system will automatically do the rest. Both times I’ve gone through this process, the Wii U synced perfectly with my television on the first try, and within a matter of seconds.

Excellent! Now I just need to know if it can be hooked up to two seperate devices at the same time (My TV and my AV Reciever) and I'm all set :)

Also, shame on these outlets for not giving us more thorough Gamepad wireless range and battery life tests. That would've been the first thing I'd do!

I also want to know what kind of limitations are at play with the Wii Mode. Are you stuck with the same old space limitations as before (256MB internal storage partition - with the separate SD Card menu) or do they give you more internal storage to play with this time?

I know that Wii Connect 24 has been disabled for Wii Mode, but can you still receive messages from games? Do save files appear alongside Wii U Saves, or is all save data handling done with the legacy menu?

You know, these are details we want to know and they're doing nothing! Hell this stuff should all be covered by the manual!

  5. NEW PANELS!!!

I got Kirby Returns to Dreamland/Kirby's Adventure Wii. Did anyone get anything else? (I hope there's a Skyward Sword one!)

Bit weird that they just randomly send out a panel for a game that came out almost a year ago...

  6. Yeah, I'm pretty happy with how it's looking so far. The only things I'm really disappointed in at this stage is the lack of cross game voice chat and the inability to playback videos/pictures/music, be it stored or streamed from a PC (The current PS3/360 interfaces and most Reciever/HTPC interfaces are really awful for this. I'd love a more userfriendly way of controlling this stuff!)

Both of those things could easily be added later on though. The most important stuff is already up and running at launch and in many ways it's well ahead of other competing services (Miiverse is a huge innovation and could be the biggest thing to happen to gaming since Wii. Just imagine your mum buying a niche game like Rhythm Heaven upon hearing all the people on Miiverse raving about it, instead of Zumba Fitness, or being able to get past a level she's stuck on by asking people for help)

Plus it solves the biggest problem with VG messageboards...

  7. Those new bundles are probably just for people who won't be getting it on day 1. I do have to admit, it's not a bad way of making up for the delay to those who couldn't get in on time.

Oh yeah, @Dcubed, you decided which bundle you're going with?

    I'm still undecided :hmm:

I'm sticking with my old 32GB NintendoLand pre-order (the one I made back in September).

Sick of waiting. I want the damn thing now! I'm not waiting any longer than I have to :)

  8. Interesting that Bill Trinen is getting a bigger PR role at NoA now. They seem to get him out at all their events to do more than just be Miyamoto's translator.

That's because he got promoted to Product Marketing Manager ;) (Presumably, he still does some translation work as overseer of NOA Treehouse though)

  9. That's why I thought they would directly buy a company to instantly gain footing, rather than doing it on their own.

Seems moreso to me that they aren't really that interested in the industry any more. That they're just gonna use games/iOS apps to promote their movies.

  10. I was thinking that Disney would look at gaming next, however I wasn't thinking about board games, but video games.

They did have a bit of a push into the industry earlier on, but they've moved away from that now (and pretty much just outsource their licences from time to time now), so I doubt they'll look to make any purchases (Lucasarts doesn't really count since they just got that as a freebie when they bought Lucasfilm)

  11. I've been playing Halo 4 all morning so I missed the live viewing. Time to catch up and see what's what. The apparent lack of voice chat already has me disappointed though.

    *presses play on subtitled version*

The subtitled version skips over the app screen interface and most of the suspend functionality.

It's worth watching the JPN one as well.

  12. Kondo:I just realised something, too! (laughs) Miiverse has a ‘Yeah’ button that you can push if someone’s comment resonates with you. You do not simply agree with a particular comment; it’s also about two people who have played the same game sharing the same feeling, so the empathy is double.

    YEAH! What that guy said!

BTW, Miiverse was co-developed by Hatena (Flipnote Studio). Guess that explains why we haven't seen Flipnote Memo...

Mizuki:Yes. There was a difference of company atmospheres, of course, but to me it felt like I was working with in-house people. And, maybe because it was Hatena, there’s a notification function this time. When someone feels empathetic and hits ‘Yeah’ on your comment, you get a notification. But that isn’t something we requested. Hatena said, "Of course we need that!" They made it and we thought, "This is great!" (laughs)

Iwata:Hatena has made all kinds of network services, like Hatena Bookmark and Hatena Diary, so they understood realities such as the necessity for a function like that these days. I feel like that’s why you were able to make something so substantial at a speed and level that you couldn’t have if you had only developed it in-house.

Mizuki:That’s right. When Mario Club debugged it, the notification function got great reviews. We wouldn’t have noticed how useful it was until we were told about it, so Hatena was extremely helpful in that regard.

Bloody hell! How could they have not even thought about something like that!? Nintendo's guys really are sleeping under a rock!

  13. Oh NICE! You can receive video calls while you're playing a game! (The Home button flashes blue :D)

You can also do video calls just on the gamepad itself (I am SO using this to watch TV shows and movies alongside distant friends by pointing the Gamepad at the TV screen :D)

  14. Disappointed that they didn't show the eShop or any voice chat support, but the rest looks really good.

Also seems that you can add friends to your friend's list from directly inside the Miiverse. Nice :)

NSMBU looks like HOT SEX :D

Edit: The Iwata Asks is up for Miiverse! (Japanese only ATM)

  15. I'm surprised that there isn't much going on in the background. Are they not doing any plane switching this time round I wonder?

Also echoing Grazza's comments on Wonderboy and Jake Kaufman.. I wanted to play Monster World IV for years and lapped it up on the Wii VC. Asha must have been an inspiration for the WayForward designers.

You wouldn't believe it if I told you, but supposedly Matt Bozon (Shantae's Director who created the character) supposedly never played those games until after he made the original!

    http://www.1up.com/features/shantae

"Zelda II and Castlevania II: Simon's Quest were direct inspirations," concedes Bozon. "People always ask if Alex Kidd in Monster World was a main inspiration, but I'd never played it until recently. It's similar in a lot of ways [an open quest and a transforming hero], but wasn't an influence.

I know! It's crazy to think that he hadn't played them, especially when the Shantae and Monster World 4 are so similar at a conceptual level!

  16. More details via GoNintendo from the Nintendo Power article...

    - 3DS eShop exclusive

    - direct sequel to Shantae: Risky's Revenge

    - picks up where the last game ended

    - Shantae is trying to adjust to no longer being a genie

    - she's also trying to defend Scuttle Town from attacks by the Ammo Baron

    - Risky Boots shows up on her door step looking for help

    - Shantae's genie magic had split into 30 parts and bonded with Risky's tinkerbat minions

    - the minions quickly mutinied and overthrew Risky

    - the minions set out to resurrect Risky's mentor The Pirate Master

    - the Pirate Master is a lot worse/a lot more evil than Risky

    - Risky and Shantae must team up to stop the tinkerbat's from unleashing the evil of the Pirate Master

    - regain all of Shantae's genie power by destroying the 30 evil tinkerbats

    - Special Pirate Gear for Shantae to collect in order to reach new areas (Grappling hook, guns, knives, swords, etc.)

    - Each piece of pirate gear will serve 2 purposes ( enhance mobility and act as a weapon for example a flintlock pistol can be used to kill enemies and hit out of reach switches)

    - Each piece of pirate gear will be upgradeable at in game shops

    - New and old locations throughout Sequin Land will appear

    - The game will supposedly be twice as large as Risky's Revenge and go everywhere even the underworld and the heavens.

    - A new/more Metroid style map system

    - Alternate/hidden paths for those who are want to stay off the beaten path

    - it will be in Stereoscopic 3D, with 3D effects similar to Mighty Switch Force

    - Series composer Jake Kaufman is back composing the score for the game

    - Familiar characters like Rollytops, Uncle Mimic, Sky, and Bolo will appear

    - Will see a 2013 release date on the Nintendo e-shop

I love the idea of each item serving two purposes. Comes across as a bit Zeldaish :D

  17. :yay: I was secretly rather sad at the thought that they might be skipping over the 3DS after the Shantae WiiU announcement. Wonderful, wonderful news!! Shantae is begging for the 3D treatment!

Well that wasn't really an announcement. They've made Shantae demos on every single Nintendo console released since the GBC (including the famous Shantae Advance demo, a 3D platformer for the GCN and a Wii demo of some sort).

That being said, I wouldn't be surprised if it did eventually get a HD version for Wii U like what Mighty Switch Force is getting (but given that the DSi game made such a big deal about plane switching - I'd assume that the 3DS sequel would follow suit, making it the ideal platform for such a game anyway)

    Either way, can't wait! :D

(Funnily enough, I was just thinking about them the other day and that they seemed like they were due for an announcement :) )
