Yeah, I really liked the demo too. Seems like it would be fun in short bursts (though would make for a bit of a repetitive slog if you powered through it)
Just gotta wait till I get paid... Almost there!
-
about £100 for the system
got all the games for it for £50 as a bundle too
Were hookers and backs of dodgy trucks involved? Cause that's one hell of a deal!
-
Just need to ask me ahead of time and I could have told you that :p Certain other sites irresponsibly said there would be stuff because they ignored the context of Masuda & Morimoto's appearance on the show. However, I've been correcting these people since the 22nd so...
Clearly they think that an "earthshaking" announcement comes every time they mention something coming on a Pokemon show aimed at little Japanese kids :p

Level 5 usually overship their games, so having it sell out is obviously a good sign
I reckon it might be using the same cartridge as Animal Crossing (as I'd expect Nintendo to want to transition to the faster flash Game Cards for all games, so it might be sharing a production line with AC - which would be eating up most of the cards I'd imagine)
Hopefully Nintendo can share more of their own cards, or open up an additional line to get the FL cards out faster!)

So how is this any different to what Onlive did? They rattled up tons of debt and then laid off staff and then got bought out by a predecided new owner....
Anyway I don't personally see any of the big publishers whole hog buying up THQ. I'd see them either buying off licences or individual studios.
It's a real shame I'm quite fond of THQ. Actually just started Space Marine and it's a really good Third Person Shooter in the Gears of War mould. Having played Warhammer in the past it's drawing on some nostalgia as well.
The difference here is that THQ went bankrupt in order to sell themselves off, while Onlive just shut down to sell itself to itself (effectively) to wipe out its debt.
THQ have seemingly tried to do something similar with the sale to Clearlake (where Ruben and Clearlake's CEO seem to be buddies), but the courts are disallowing it from happening. As it stands, THQ will be sold off to someone else; probably piece by piece to 5 unnamed mystery buyers...
-
DP's sales include more time. BW is at just over 2 years old atm and has 15 million units. DP's from 4 years sales was at 17 million and is now sitting just below 18 million.
BW will undoubtedly outsell DP
I dunno... I reckon that B&W might get capped at the knees by the death of the DS as a platform. I suppose that partially depends on how strong B&W2's legs end up being and how long it props up the DS' legs for though...
-
RS almost killed my love of the franchise :p
Yeah, I filled my post with hyperbole, but you have to admit that new Pokémon are why things sell. Look at Black & White; during the first two days of sale, they sold 2.5 million units. Gold/Silver, Ruby/Sapphire and Diamond/Pearl did 1.5 million each in their first two days. The other games then do half of that because they don't have new Pokémon
Didn't D/P actually outsell B&W? B&W was just much more frontloaded than the past games (a byproduct of appealing to an older audience and expanding the series' demographic reach)
-
Probably because it was retarded :p
Besides, Ruby/Sapphire changed things a lot. The entire engine was scrapped and redone for RS, with the DP and BW engines being enhancements on it. It was the first to truly focus on a narrative (until BW made it the main bit of the game rather than the gyms).
As much as I hate Ruby & Sapphire, it changed the series for the better.
I honestly don't get why people want less Pokémon. I want each generation to be like Black & White was. No old Pokémon until you've finished. Without new Pokémon, then variety would go. You'd be using the same Pokémon over and over. The games would literally be the same but with a different story
Hate is a bit of a strong word for R/S/E no? It might be my least favourite of the series, but it's certainly not a bad game at all! It introduced a lot of the staples that have defined the series since (natures, double battles etc) and evolved the metagame into the beast it is today!
Also "same game with a different story"? Come on man! You of all people should know that this isn't true. The Physical/Special system being overhauled for D/P/P alone is enough to make it a wholly different experience, with a whole different level of strategy (Hitmonchan actually became useful for godsake!)
That being said, B&W is my favourite of the series and a big reason behind that is the fact that it wiped the slate clean with only having the 150 new mons being accessible until the main game was finished (it's also the first game that I actually bothered to catch em all since G/S/C too
)
I don't expect to get that from gen 6, purely because they have to write an all new game engine for the 3DS, in fact I wouldn't be surprised to see the least amount of new mons since R/S/E. I am excited to see what the 3DS hardware could offer though - full 3D environments with camera control perhaps? (The environments could also potentially be much more interactive as a result too!)
Not to mention new event Pokemon actually being added via Spotpass. No more would we know everything about what's upcoming any more! (Made all the sweeter by the end of the influence of Action Replay cartridges!
)
Oh and just imagine if you could have a special box in your PC that trades random Pokemon with people via Streetpass!
-
I cried.
Also, that loading time...seems much quicker than the loading times of the Wii version?
It's almost twice as fast. I posted a comparison in the Wii U thread a whiles back (3DS still wins though of course
)

Oh my! A twist has entangled THQ's thread of fate!
http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=506812
It seems that the US courts have not approved of THQ's bankruptcy plan with Clearlake!
Originally Posted by duckroll:I think what people need to consider is that it is looking more and more apparent that THQ management has been illegally sabotaging their own company in an attempt to wipe their debt, screw their creditors, and continue to keep their jobs with a new owner which is personally linked to their new president. It's really dodgy shit, which is why they're getting in trouble with it now, and it has nothing to do with the employees in the various studios who work hard making games.
Yeah, I mean, the opposition here is pretty straight forward.
Hunter @DDInvesting
THQ Creditor Committee Named: Wilmington Trust, WWE, Silverback Asset Management, Mattel, and Viacom
Hunter @DDInvesting
THQI Hearing: Original projections from just 2 weeks ago of -$10M of cash flow. Actual net cash flows actually positive of $3.4M.
Hunter @DDInvesting
THQ: Lawyers for Warner Brothers states they have team ready to complete due diligence if more time is allowed.
Hunter @DDInvesting
TQHI court heating up. Centerview's banker on record of saying buyers are interested in individual titles. Clearlake has said not allowed.
Hunter @DDInvesting
THQI: Judge doesn't approve bid procedures. Not approving DIP. Recommencing Monday.
Basically everyone they work with is opposing them (including Viacom of South park and the WWE), and they have five known bidders who don't have the time to actually bid with Clearlake also trying to stop them.
The judge also refused even basic funding to keep THQ operating, so that implies she thought it was quite suspicious.
So there are 5 parties who are all interested in buying parts of THQ, but Clearlake wants to make them buy the whole thing (all or nothing). THQ also have about 2 weeks worth of cash flow left - so the whole thing needs to be settled within that timeframe, or THQ will have to cease all development as they won't be able to pay their devs.
So I guess the big question here is... Who are the 5 potential buyers?
I'd bet on Warner Bros being one of them. Supposedly their lawyers were at the trial, testifying against the original bankruptcy plan. That leaves 4 mystery buyers who may or may not be VG Publishers...
-
Yeah true. I really loved how they made it so that no old Pokemon appear until you've finished the main game
That being said, I really doubt they'll do that again. They could do that because they already had a DS engine that they could rework, so they could focus moreso on the raw content of the game. With Gen 6, they'll have to start from scratch, so they won't be able to make as many new Pokemon as had appeared in B&W.

Did you at least pick BT up at some point? It's still a good game overall even if this is the tighter, more focused affair.
The original version doesn't feature the over shoulder camera - it was only like that in the remake which came out after RE4 did.
Yes it does. In the Spooky chapter, when you get the shotgun (it even has the laser sight that RE4 made famous!)
You can even move while shooting to boot! (Something that wasn't added to RE until RE:Mercenaries 3D
)
Oh and BT>>BK (Yeah, I went there :p)

Question that I should know, but don't.
Do saved games go on the game card or on the system? So if I use my Resident Evil Revelations card on another system, will I have to start again?
All 3DS games save on the card itself.

I've just finished the 4th world and I'm still enjoying it (4-3 in particular was lots of fun
)
But I do find myself wishing for more story and characterisation... I'm not fully convinced that ditching the story entirely was the right way to go (though I'm not really missing the experience points - I'm really enjoying the battle system in general still
and I'm finding myself using the Thing stickers in battle a lot more in general - now that I know that I can always buy the Things back from Decalburg after using them, I can enjoy all their funny animations
)
Am I to understand that this particular Paper Mario is actually the most basic in terms of areas?I mean, Thousand Year Door and Super Paper Mario were incredible in their creativity when it came to environments.
Even the very first Paper Mario had some great new spins on the classic Mario universe.
Yeah. The worlds pretty much follow the classic Mario cliches (Grasslands, Desert, Ice etc)
That being said, there's plenty of creativity throughout and lots of parts that'll make you laugh and smile...
Just don't expect the crazy characters, settings or story that you'd expect from a Paper Mario.

I've been playing through Conker's Bad Fur Day again on N64 in recent weeks
Considering it's been a decade or so since I last played it properly, I was actually quite surprised by just how much fun it still is and how impressive some of the graphics, sound and gameplay was for the time
I finished my playthrough this afternoon and did so in just over half the time of my original file. There were certainly moments of frustration, particularly during the war sections, but as one of Rare's final outings on a Nintendo console it highlights just how great they could be when they were on form.. and also how glad I am that I chose this over Banjo Tooie back at the time
Once a great game, always a great game
It's really one of a kind, a game that really defies a genre description (it was also the game that invented the over-the-shoulder 3rd person shooter view too! Take THAT RE4!)
Makes you pine for the good ol' days of Rareware
(and no, the Xbox version is nowhere near as good as the original!)

This is sounding like pretty big stuff, could Gen 6 really be coming this quickly?
It's not that early really. PKMN B&W came out in September 2010 in Japan. The Gen 6 games will probably come around September or so. I think that 3 years is long enough
Edit: Oh my... Seems that the official US PKMN Twitter account is now hyping up the event...
One does wonder what it could all mean...

Good. The quicker that PS4 and 720 get unveiled, the quicker we get all of this shrouded-in-mystery BS over and done with!
The promises of nebulous nonsense that has spread over the last year or so is just pissing me off. Finally we'll be able to see what they're actually doing/not doing and we'll see what fantastic/piss poor graphics jump that "next gen" will offer.
Looking forward to anti-used game systems that have discs with RFID tags (http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=506560) that sell for £50 with ingame ads and another £50's worth of DLC on top of the privilage of paying full whack for it
And with new controllers that are functionally identical to the ones you've already got for just £40 a pop (oh and you can't use your existing PS360 ones either...)
Only £300 with a 2 year XBL Gold subscription (Youtube and Netflix access sold separately) WHAT A STEAL!!!
I'm becoming a right Cranky Kong lol. Maybe if I'm lucky, there will be a couple of indie games I'm interested in playing in a couple of years down the line after retail becomes nothing but COD/COD clones, Uncharted & Heavy Rain clones, Asscreed and Fifa...

Pokemon Grey incoming!
DSi only for maximum trollage :p
-
So... that announcement that was mentioned on Japanese TV to be coming on Jan 8th...
http://www.pokemon.co.jp/ex/important_announce/
The official PKMN website now has a page set up telling people to bookmark this page for the day.
I'm starting to think that it's a bit more than just Hey You Pikachu 2

The radiator is the first thing I thought of using...
Same goes for the Fire Flower to get that level's other Comet Sticker!

Take all that functionality away. What games use those functions, and do any use them well?! I highly doubt it. Seems like another bollocks limitation to me.
And also, still doesn't stop you being able to use them on the gamepad. It could just treat it like a TV.
If you take those functions away, the games would crash. Anything that uses Miis (which is a large chunk of the Wii's library BTW) would simply not function.
And the Wii Mode has no way of even detecting the Gamepad at all, it's a limitation of hardware based backwards compatibility. What you are asking for can only be done through software emulation. Hardware based BC simply cannot work in the way you're describing (It's all or nothing).
-
Nintendo really need to embed the Wii mode in the main OS and also tie wii and wii u accounts seamlessly. They did it with 3DS DSiware, seems like a bizarre step back!
They also need to let us play all these game solely on the pad!
They have to have it seperate in order to maintain full compatibility. The DS or DSi's games never had any functions that hooked into its OS. The Wii however has the Miis that hook into the Mii Channel, games that can send messages to the Wii Message Board, games that can access data from the Weather and Mii Contest Channels and games that can install channels to the Wii Menu. If the OS wasn't there, the games would just crash and not function.
All the 3DS has to do is activate its BC mode to fully run DS/DSi games. The Wii U on the other hand has to have all of the Wii's base functions built in in order for games to function properly. There's no way around it sadly.
Likewise, activating Wii Mode literally turns the Wii U into a Wii (just like GCN mode turned the Wii into a GCN). The Wii Mode has no way of accessing any of the Wii U's hardware functionality and so, cannot stream games to the Gamepad. It's a hardware limitation and something that just comes with the territory of hardware based BC. Again, no way around it.

Bah! I held off buying a bunch of games on the VC when they announced the premium deal.
What about the VC games being tied to my Nintendo ID? Or is this just a case of transferring over all the ones on my Wii and then if anything happens send it to Nintendo who will put them all back on?
I think the bolded is correct. It's the same as with the Wii ATM, though who knows what's gonna happen when the Wii U VC comes out and whether or not we'll get upgraded to native Wii U versions of VC games...
-
A few questions about the premium points and eShop.
Do you earn points from VC purchases on the Wii Shop or is it just for stuff like Nano Assualt and downloadable retail games?
Say I bought Secret of Mana on the VC ( still wanna play it ) is that now tied to my Nintendo ID?
I'm pretty sure I know the answer to these questions but figure I would get confirmation from someone with a little more knowledge about said stuff. *cough*Dcubed*cough*
AFAIK, no. You get Club Nintendo stars for them, but no NPremium points.
The NPremium points come from Wii U eShop downloads only (though the download code that you get from the website can actually be redeemed on any Nintendo estore - including the Wii U & 3DS eShop, as well as the Wii Shop Channel and the DSiWare store

2013: The platform deluge of the 90s reborn?
in General Gaming Discussion
Posted
So with two new consoles announced in just the last two days alone (Valve's Steambox http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=506899 and NVidia's Shield Handheld http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=507099) and a further 3 consoles due to arrive late this year/early 2014 (Ouya, PS4 and Xbox 720), is anyone else here getting a flashback to the mid 90s; when pretty much everyone had a crack at making their own game console?
It's pretty crazy really! It's just been the "big 3" for the last decade and now all of a sudden, consoles are popping up left-right and centre! (granted, I fully expect stuff like Shield to crash and burn; if indeed it doesn't follow the Panasonic Jungle's example and just disappears out of existence before it launches)
Weird times at the moment! I wonder if it comes as a result of the past generation (gen 7) just lasting too long, or if it's a sign of an impending crash as the market becomes too fragmented for its own good?
The 90s saw these flies get swatted away, but with a burgeoning indie market now in place, I wonder if there may indeed now be room for more platforms (certainly not all will survive, but could we see more distinction between different surviving devices? - With Nintendo doing their own thing, someone filling in for generic AAA traditional games and one more for indie/mobile games on the TV/and maybe on the go as well)
What do you guys make of it?
