    Today at independent developer conference BitSummit in Japan, Cave Story creator Daisuke Amaya revealed a 2D iPhone action/platformer called Gero Blaster.

     

    Starring a gun toting frog — "gero" being the sound a frog makes in Japanese — the game resembles side-scrolling shooters like Metal Slug and Contra; or more specifically Super Time Force, given the shared pixel art style. The plot sees main character Kaeru hunting for his kidnapped girlfriend on an "unknown planet."

     

    According to a product page handed out at the event, Amaya is planning to release the game in May 2013 (though we don't know at the moment if that means for a U.S. or Japan-only release) and is currently looking into other platforms beyond iPhone. Another Amaya game, Ikachan, recently released on 3DS 10 years after its initial shareware PC version.

  2. So if I can only get one Nano Assualt Neo, 3DS or Wii U.... which would people reccomend?

     

    They're both completely different games, so really you should get both eventually.

     

    Still, get the Wii U one first since it's cheaper and if you like it, get the 3DS game as well.

  3. Just came in to say that Nano Assault EX is freaking awesome! Love it! :D

     

    Circle Pad Pro is definitely the way to go with this game (except for the Starfox style stages, don't try to control the cursor, just use the one analog stick - it controls much better that way)

     

    It definitely feels like a full retail title (which makes sense considering that it IS a full retail title), much more expansive than the Wii U game.

     

    I also finally picked up Tokyo Crash Mobs (which is really surprisingly polished! As well as bat-shit insane :laughing:), Escape Vektor (which is also a really nice game), Hydroventure Spin Cycle (which feels a bit rough round the edges - but the 360 degree stages are fun :) ) and Nightsky (which is very polished, atmospheric and good fun :) )

     

    Ahh, good times.

  4. Monster were never really going to be doing anything other than a 3DS game. Most people don't realise how tiny they are.

     

    They could've done a downloadable Wii U game I guess.

     

    But even so, I really doubt that this is all they've been working on throughout the last 2 years. They did manage to release two games in 2009 after all...

    "Other consoles including GBA" are coming at a later date (I watched it again recently to double check and that's what he said)

    No, in the last Nintendo Direct, Iwata said that the Wii U VC service would launch "right after" the spring system update - which is happening in April.

     

    NES & SNES only though at launch (and it won't include every game from the Wii VC catalogue on day 1)

  7. Really enjoyed the Iwata asks, makes me want to pick this up out of support for both the guy who conceptualised it, and to support this sort of model of working.

     

    Out of interest anyone know rough price tag for here, or for the foreign territories if not?

     

    It's $14.99, so I expect a £12.49 price tag for us (Nano Assault EX translated the same way in terms of price).

     

    From my understanding, it has the scope of a full retail title - so the price seems reasonable to me (plus it's cheaper than the Japanese version, which was around $20 IIRC :) )

  9. Toki Tori 2 is due to be released any week now (it is finished and has been submitted to Nintendo for release)

     

    Otherwise, you've got the eShop version of MH3U coming out the same day as the retail version, Bit Trip Runner in April and the Wii U VC service also launching proper some time in April.

  10. I wanted to try out DragonBall Online for the longest time, ever since first reading about it, so I finally sorted out a way to play. I like it, but the language barrier is awful even with the English UI patch applied. Doubt it'll ever come out in English so I guess this is the best that itch will ever get scratched.

     

    I also longed to play Tales of the Abyss for many years, but when it finally came out on the 3DS the lead character turned out to be a whiney douche and pretty much spoiled any chance I'd finish the game. Fuck you, Luke. FUCK YOU.

     

    Another series I'd really like to try out is Super Robot Wars.

     

    That's done on purpose and it's only for the start of the game. He's a whiney brat for just a small portion of the total game...

  11. Oh I heard about this a few weeks back. It's not the complete arcade experience unfortunately (it's missing a few animations that were unique to AX, as well as the AX exclusive attract screen and per-character endings), but the stage select screen works properly and the time-extension mechanic is working correctly - which of course is the most important part.

     

    It's the closest that we'll probably ever get to playing AX in a legal fashion.

     

    Couldn't you unlock all the arcade tracks anyway?

     

    Yes you could unlock all 6 AX tracks and all the AX characters (it was brutally difficult to do so, but it was possible!)

     

    There are also 15 custom vehicle parts that were exclusive to AX, which you could only unlock in GX via using your GCN memory card on an AX machine, but thankfully they can be unlocked via Action Replay as well ;)

  12. Oh wow! That's a shocker! Never saw that one coming :o

     

    I'm feeling a bit better about this whole thing now :) Monster Games are big enough to handle two projects at a time (they made Excitebike World Rally at the same time as Excitebots) so they should still be making something else as well :D

     

    The only downside to this is that I don't expect the game to run at a solid 60FPS anymore now. Monster Games' games always run at a slightly iffy framerate...

  13. By the way, a trailer is now up on the European eShop, found it earlier when doing a search for "HarmoKnight". Yes, I still do that eShop search thing. :heh:

     

    Come on, NoE. Give us a release date already!!

     

    Well it seemed to work with Sakura/Hana Samurai so keep at it!

     

    I reckon it'll still come out in March like they originally promised. They wouldn't release a trailer and an Iwata Asks (which also promised a demo before launch) just now unless they planned on releasing it soonish :)

  14. There's too many to list here, so I'm gonna limit my responses just a few of each.

     

    What game have you always wanted to play and why?

     

    Mother 1-3 and Fire Emblem 1-6. I love the FE series so it's no wonder why I've always wanted to play the missing first 6 games, but the Mother/Earthbound series has always intrigued me, despite not playing any of the previous titles. While I know little about the actual games, as I have purposely avoided playing any illegal ROM version or fan translation in hope that I'll one day be able to play proper English VC versions of these games, from what little I know of it it sounds so completely bonkers insane that I simply MUST play it! :D

     

    what game have you always wanted to play that never saw the light of day, whether it be cancelled or released in a completely different state?

     

    Conker Twelve Tales (just to see what it would've been like before it became CBFD), Dinosaur Planet N64 (which looks MUCH better than how the final game turned out), Starfox 2, Rollorama/Kirby's Tilt N' Tumble 2 and the BS Zeldas (in their original form with live streaming audio and timed events)

    For those of you who've never heard of it, it's an arcade game where you play a series of Wario Ware style minigames (though they each last around 30 seconds) with a sliding paddle style controller on a belt buuuuutttt... there's a twist! The game features two paddles on the same belt, so you have to physically push and shove the other player to survive! It's great fun! :yay:

     

     

    Come on! Give us a Wii U version Namco! (you could just release an attachment that has the Wii remotes dock into a sliding cradle!)

     

    The other one I'll choose for this are Killer Instinct 1 & 2. We STILL have never had a proper home release of either game!

     

    I could include much more than I've listed here, but that would take forever so I might just add some more later ;)

  15. The Gamepad is an interesting beast in that it is designed for themselves and as a concession to 3rd parties in some respects. It allows them to revive the GBA-GCN connectivity concept that they wanted to push so badly back in the day, while removing all the barriers and control/processing power issues that held it back.

     

    However, they've also designed it in such a way that appeases 3rd parties as well (the redesign from the E3 to the final version which ditched the Circle pads in favour of clickable sticks and the ability to have off-TV play which is a lazy way to add a selling point to an otherwise standard multiplatform game) - not to mention the pro-controller, which is a carbon copy of the 360 controller that Nintendo admitted wasn't designed for their own games, but rather to keep 3rd parties happy.

     

    And after all that, you STILL have developers making excuses not to support the console.

     

    Quite frankly, controls nor processing power are the barrier that is stopping 3rd party developers from supporting the platform - but rather personal reasons/egos and business issues are the culprit. The idea that the Gamepad's unique functions are in any way shape or form a barrier to multiplatform development is patently absurd and anyone who makes that excuse deserves to be flogged to within an inch of their lives!

     

    Personally, I'm glad to see them take a different approach with the controls on this console and the idea of them having the Wii U being the swiss army knife of control possibilities is really quite exciting! It can truly power ANY experience that you can think of! :D

     

    The Wii Remote and Nunchuck was never going to be properly supported by 3rd parties, hell it wasn't when it was included in the box last time around! The only thing that matters here is whether or not Nintendo themselves are still fully supporting it and all signs indicate that this is exactly what they're doing - in fact, their biggest upcoming title was designed completely around the Wii Remote Plus and the Nunchuck first and foremost!

     

    Motion controls aren't going away - they're just as prominent as ever. The Gamepad itself is a motion device after all (which in of itself offers new ways of playing motion controlled games, by nature of having the screen being tied directly to the device's orientation) and the Wii Remote is still at the forefront of development for Nintendo. It's an evolution of Wii AND a new path for them to forge onward into the future. It's the best of both worlds :) (And for the 3rd parties who aren't interested in exploring new forms of gameplay, it's a lazy way out and an easy selling point for a Wii U version)

    Masuda: This is why we decided to change the internal structure of the company so that we could initiate new projects while still being able to give our all on Pokémon titles. We have structured things so that if you come up with an idea for a game, you can write a proposal for it;if you can then get two other people to support it, you will be given three months to make it.

     

    Iwata: I see. So you have made specific rules, along the lines of Google’s ‘20 percent time’3 concept. Is any member of your staff free to work on coming up with a game?

     

    3. ’20 percent time’: Google allow their development staff to devote 20 percent of their working hours to their own pet projects.

     

    Masuda: Yes, that’s right. Anyone can work on developing a game, as long as you can find two other people prepared to come on board with the project. Then, after three months, we will check on the game’s progress.

     

    Iwata: So you check to see whether or not the project is worth continuing.

     

    Masuda: That’s right. And if we think it’s worth pursuing, we will give the team another three months to work on it. Then, six months after work begins on a game, the management will make a decision as to whether or not to turn it into a full-blown project. HarmoKnight is the first fruit of our company’s new system, which encourages people who have an idea to just give it a go.

     

    Iwata: Ah, I see. Back when you and I began working in game development, that would very much be the attitude: ‘Just give it a go!’ That was how projects would get started.

     

    Masuda: Yes, absolutely. In the old days, games would get started as tiny projects. You’d often just be toying with some idea or other that seemed like fun, and then you’d decide to take it further and make it into a game.

     

    Iwata: I first got involved in game development back when you were expected to come up with a new title every three months. It’s unthinkable nowadays! (laughs)

     

    Masuda: It really is! (laughs) But it is so much fun to have just a few of handful of people working on turning your very own idea into a game.

     

    Iwata: Absolutely! (laughs)

     

    I wish that Nintendo would apply this policy across all of their studios...

  17. Its difficult to quantify, i got it on PSP ages ago and the first 10 or so hours i felt like i had wasted my money, it wasnt until i turned it on the next day that it clicked for me. I think most people will say the same, no one really likes the game at first, but at some point you suddenly understand and im not sure how to explain that to people unless they have played something similar like Darksouls (in terms of controls not gameplay).

     

    Its not an easy game and it dosent help new people in any way, animation takes priority over button pressing so every move you make takes a type of commitment you wont see often in games, there is no way to cancel out of an attack, once the animation starts you are stuck until either you connect or the monster hits you. The punishment for missing or being too slow with a move is sometimes 1/2 your life bar, and to restore your hp you have to activate the animation for that too.

     

    If it dosent sound like im doing a good job of selling it to you thats fine, its a game you have to come to terms with, to understand that the first few hours you play you will die, a lot and probably not really know why. If you do pick the game up its probably worth adventuring with others first so you are not getting constantly murdered by your prey, it still wont be easy but you will at least have people barking advice at you as you play.

     

    Well, Tri does do a much better job at easing newcomers into the game than the PSP ones do but you're right. It's not a game that you will "get" straight away - it has a steep learning curve and will kick your arse repeatedly.

     

    Best way to describe it is like Punchout I guess. That triaumphant feeling you get when you finally figure out how to kill a monster and grab that loot you've wanted to make that new weapon or armour that you've been craving for is just wonderful! :D

  18. Finally got it. It's awesome!

     

    Great little pick up and play game. The 3DS really needs more games like this :)

     

    I've just gotten to Well 5 and unlocked the iron ball. I love how each "stone" has it's own little backstory :laughing: (LOL @ the bouncy ball one!)

     

    I can already tell that chasing the high score on this is gonna be the death of me :D
