  1. Playstation 5 Console Discussion

I imagine Gran Turismo will turn up this year too.
  2. I've been doing some thinking around why I enjoyed Hyrule Castle so much (as mentioned in my post above) and whilst playing Dark Souls 3 yesterday it finally clicked. You see, the Souls games do a really great job of creating environments that feel realistic in terms of the way they are designed. Exploring the castle at the end of Dark Souls 3 for example is great fun because the level is set up to feel like like you're exploring an actual castle, as opposed to a gamified environment (for example, a typical Zelda dungeon) where you have things like locks, keys, maps and other treasure chests hidden in areas which require a suspension of belief to understand why they are there. With Hyrule Castle, from memory, they never introduced locks and keys and whatnot. Instead, it seemed like they just focused on building a castle so exploring it felt much more natural. Going through libraries or discovering a bedroom for example felt much more organic.
  3. Oh wow! I'm tempted to check that game out actually. I've been playing through the Dark Souls games recently and the super tight timing of the parry is something that I'd love to see in Zelda. Glad to see AoC has addressed the issue.
  4. Some other points... Combat can be broken too easily because: 1. Link has an extraordinary appetite and can just eat constantly, which makes a lot of combat encounters too easy. One of my favourite things about Dark Souls is that you have to heal in real time; a similar system would be great. Additionally, give Link a hunger meter so you can only stuff his face when he's hungry. 2 The combat system is easily broken because the last minute dodge -> Flurry attack (is that what it's called?) is triggered by a dodge in any direction when the enemy is in an attacking state, even if their attack is nowhere near Link. The moment I realised this is the moment became too easy (despite quite hard before that!). As Ronnie states above, the foundations of the game are excellent
  5. The Wii U's output was fine if you enjoyed those medium budget, AA titles. It's complete lack of system sellers was the issue, especially with the high price. The software strategy was abysmal, not helped by the fact that the target audience had moved on. My first year on Switch had BOTW2 and Mario Odyssey, which quite frankly was better than the entire Wii U's lifespan (and funnily enough, better than any subsequent Switch year). Getting this back on topic, I really hope this sequel has more 'inside' areas. As much as I loved exploring BOTW, my favourite area of the games was easily Hyrule Castle. A couple of area's like that before the end of the game would be most welcome. I'm also intrigued to see if they can add underwater traversal.
  6. Your 2021 Gaming Diary

Finally completed Untitled Goose Game yesterday. I downloaded it when it came out but only had a small session on it, but when I saw that there had been a co-op update I decided to jump back in with my other half, and we ended up completing the game in two sessions. For an environmental puzzle game, I thought it was pretty fantastic overall. I can't recall a single time where I thought the solution to a puzzle was too abstract or difficult, and I really enjoyed the music and art style. I hope they make a sequel, with cats.
  7. Ghost of Tsushima (PS4/PS5)

I've heard this from a lot of people. I think ultimately there's just a limit as to how an open world game can be designed on a last generation console due to CPU and HDD limitations.
  8. Demon's Souls (12th November 2020)

@Julius I would definitely recommend at least playing all of Miyazaki's games. Demon's Souls, Dark Souls, Bloodborne and Sekiro are all expertly crafted video games and all feel very distinct. Dark Souls 2 and 3 are made by the 'B' teams and it definitely shows. I don't think you'll get burnout going from the titles I've listed above, but if you included DS 2 and 3 then you probably would.
  9. Cyberpunk 2077 (10th December 2020)

It's kind of crazy to think that the developer have gone from this really 'pro consumer' mindset with free-DLC to basically creating one of the biggest screw ups in modern gaming. I really feel sorry for the millions who preordered the game and also the developers, who have been enduring crunch for the best part of a year. Truthfully, the game seems to have been released 6-12 months too early. Releasing a buggy game is of course awful. What's worse however is that they hid how broken the game was and ensured that all reviews for PS4 / XBO versions of the game were done on next gen consoles via BC. I don't recall this ever being done before and it's pretty crazy to think that the higher ups at the company thought that they could get away with it. Shame on them. What happens next? If I was a stakeholder I'd be fuming, but assuming they don't sue the company then I imagine a way out is to simply work flat out on fixing the game whilst releasing free DLC. What I find so weird about this whole thing though is that the game doesn't even appear to be that revolutionary in terms of its gameplay? It's basically just a great open world title; nothing more, nothing less.
  10. It's crazy how good this game looks when you consider that it's a cross gen game.
  11. Demon's Souls (12th November 2020)

It still wasn't an exclusive. Call it cross-gen or whatever. @LazyBoy I certainly wouldn't call this a remaster. It's a full on remake, in the same way the SotC remake was different to the remaster that appeared on PS3. SM64 was certainly more revolutionary though. I'm not sure if we'll ever get a game that defines the boundaries of a new generation quite like SM64 did.
  12. Playstation 5 Console Discussion

Had the most awkward interaction with a work colleague who has two PS5's and was boasting about she was going to sell them off for plenty of profit. Scalper's Congrats to those that have one of these brilliant machines! Looks epic.
  13. Demon's Souls (12th November 2020)

Quite possibly the best ever launch game that wasn't a port, alongside Super Mario 64?
  14. Playstation 5 Console Discussion

It looks like the PS5 is getting rave reviews from critics, and deservedly so. It's a true next generation machine, and I haven't seen people this blown away by a console since the 360 and the transition to HD. The only *mild disappointment* is the controller battery life but the fact that many outlets are claiming that the controller is a true game changer is fantastic news. In recent years, we've had Nintendo try to simply their controllers but what Sony have done is take the existing DualShock and innovate on it. Really exciting stuff.
  15. Demon's Souls (12th November 2020)

This looks extraordinary. Easily the best game I've ever seen. When I do pick up a PS5, this will be the first game I play. I'm currently working my way through Dark Souls Remastered and I'm in love with it. Bloodborne is still my favourite though.
  16. Xbox Series S | X Console Discussion

I've still got my Series S pre-ordered but I'm tempted to cancel it. I've just purchased the Dark Souls trilogy which I expect we'll keep me entertained for some time, so it seems a bit pointless to buy a digital only console. Had a new Halo been launching alongside it, I would keep it pre-ordered but for now I'm happy to stick with my One X. Microsoft have built some really good hardware over recent years. I just hope the software can start to roll in.
  17. Formula 1 2020 Season

Can't wait for the race today! With Bottas ahead of Lewis and two stops expected, we could end up having a bit of a strategic thriller. For the sake of an interesting championship, my predictions are: 1. Bottas 2. Max 3. Albon If Albon gets a good launch he could be a real factor when it comes to strategy today.
  18. Sackboy: A Big Adventure (PS5)

This looks pretty good, presumably because it seems to be inspired by 3D World. The physics engine also looks pretty decent, which has always been my biggest issue with the regular LBP games.
  19. Playstation 5 Console Discussion

I'm actually going the other way. I'm getting a Series S at launch to replace my One X but the fact that Microsoft are launching without any exclusive software is just plain comical in my eyes. That said, Yakuza should be enough to keep me entertained. I'm going to hold off getting a PS5 until we've got a bigger TV. Annoyingly, the software looks absolutely superb and I'm a bit gutted that I'm going to miss out on Spiderman, as well as Demon Souls and Ratchet. I imagine I'll end up buying one late into 2021, which I'm hoping is when Gran Turismo also launches.
  20. Job woes/wins

Update: Had my interview yesterday and it went as well as it could have gone to be honest. It was a one hour competency based interview, so thankfully no presentations or anything like that. I won't be find out until next Monday so I'm just going to put it to back of my mind. @Will Good to hear
  21. Football Season 2020-21

The most bizarre thing about the weekend was Maguire pulling Luke Shaw, who was about to clear the ball, to the ground to let Ndombele score. I can't believe he's the worlds most expensive defender. Jose showing the world that he might still know what he's doing.
  22. Job woes/wins

Not sure how I've managed it but I've got a job interview on Tuesday. It's with the same company I currently work for but on a 12-month secondment in a much more senior role (I'd be going for a mid-grade 3 to a grade 5). I currently manage small scale digital projects but this role is a huge step up, comes with big jump in salary (about 30% more) and would give me a chance to really showcase my skills. Judging from the diary of the person conducting the interviews, they are only interviewing two people all week so I've pretty much got a 50-50 chance. Best of all, it's a competency based interview only, and I think they are happy for the successful candidate to learn on the job. I think I'm going to just forget about it completely over the weekend and not stress about it too much until Monday. Certainly exciting though.
  23. Formula 1 2020 Season

Honda are pulling out of F1 at the end of 2021. Not surprising but it throws a real question mark over the future of the sport and teams like Red Bull. If they go down the customer team route, they aren't winning another title until 2026 at the earliest.
  24. Formula 1 2020 Season

Predictions for the race.... 1. Max 2. Bottas 3. Ricciardo I'm expecting fireworks at turn 1 tomorrow. Lewis will be starting on the tyre that he and Mercedes wanted to avoid...Will be interesting to see how the soft actually holds up. On a different note, Mick Schumacher won in the F2 feature race and he's got a decent lead in the standings now. Fully expect him alongside Kimi at Alfa next year.
  25. Xbox Series S | X Console Discussion

Sony also offer an upgrade pathway but technically it's optional for each game and up to each developer, correct? Microsoft's approach is different as every game is automatically upgraded. I imagine this is because their ecosystem is also on PC now. Why should a PC gamer get a free upgrade and not the console owner? The moment they moved I.P to PC and also gave PC gamers access to GamePass, this was bound to happen, and it's a very good move. On a different note...do we know if Microsoft have any launch games planned for the Series S or X? I've got a GamePass subscription already for my X but is there any new software coming out for November from their first party developers? Or was it just Halo before the delay?
