  1. Your 2019 Gaming Diary

My time to play games has unfortunately reduced significantly. Working full time as a lawyer, studying for a masters part time and recently having a new born really takes up a lot of time. Below, is a list of games that I have recently been playing or completed: Diablo 3 I bought this on Switch last year and been slowly going through the main story. I actually enjoy the repetitive gameplay but the story is a bit naff. I'm playing through the main campaign at the moment at a fairly high difficulty setting but i'm tempted to play through on the easiest just to get it done. I hear that it is the non-story part of the game which is the best mode. Unsure what others think. I'm playing alone, if that makes any difference as to what mode to play. Super Mario U Deluxe I played it on the Wii U but I am picking up all the ports so I don't have to play the console again. I played this before MM2 was released and I fully enjoyed it. I know people complain about the art style, lack of difficulty or that it adds little new to the table but I personally really enjoyed it. Its Mario, what is there not to like. Anyway, I finished the main story and just need to go back and collect the coins. I also need to start the Luigi DLC Mario Maker I used one of my eshop vouchers to download this as I thought it would be a perfect download only game to have (I generally buy physical). Initially, playing other people's levels were fun and I tend to go back to it regular to see what there is. I am slowly going through the story mode but I haven't put in lots of time into that. I tend to keep playing levels created by others. I have yet to make one either and that mode remains untouched. I am not generally a creative person so I don't have much confidence going into that mode. Super Smash Bros Ultimate I have been regularly playing the game since I received it for xmas. I have yet to finish World of Light but all of the characters are unlocked. I am enjoying it a lot more than I did on Wii U but I do suck at it and always get beat online. Nevermind eh. Doom (2016) I had this on my backlog for ages and have been enjoying playing through it on Switch. I have to say, though it is a bit samey all the way through with little change. A good run and gun game though (I think I enjoyed Titanfall 2 more this gen). I am still playing this but I hope to finish it off shortly Astral Chain Finished this yesterday - thoughts are in the thread. In short; enjoyable experience and probably the most accessible platinum game that I have experienced. There is lots of twists and turns in the story but the execution of it left more questions than answers. I had fun with this game - the action being superb. Xenoblade I had this on Wii but unfortunately reached Sword Valley and my save file corrupted so didn't go back to it until early this year when I decided to pick it up for 3DS. 60 hours played and at Sword Valley when the fucking remake is announced for the Switch. Anyway, decided to shelve it as I want to play the definitive version (and that is not on the 3DS - although it does push the system). I was both pissed off and excited about the Switch announcement. Dragon Quest VIII Despite having both DQ VII & VIII in my 3DS backlog I have yet to play any DQ. With release of DQ XI on Switch, I decided that now is the time to play one. I'm 30 mins into DQ VIII. No thoughts so far. I couldn't decide which one to play so went with the 8 seeing that it had received excellent fan feedback. If I like it, I will then start 7. Should I scrap the playthrough of 8 and just get 11 for Switch? Is it worth picking up the other DQ titles that are on 3DS/DS?
  2. Astral Chain -- August 30th 2019

I finished the story on this last night. Overall, I really enjoyed it and loved the art style. I enjoyed it a lot more once I mastered the controls and gameplay. Although I enjoyed the story I did feel that it lacked in certain areas and left more questions than answers. To be honest, I don't think the whole thing was explained all that well. The gameplay was a lot of fun and I am glad that I decided to buy this and give it a go. Recommended.
  3. Football Season 2019-20

For a newly promoted club, we have had a great start to the season! Really happy with Chris Wilder and lads for getting stuck in and not allowing us to be, so far, a laughing stock. All of the pundits before the season started had written us off. Three years ago we drew against Scunthorpe in League 1, yesterday we won against Everton away in the Premier League. Absolutely fantastic! We played pretty bad yesterday but got the result, but we played really well the week before at home and lost. Its a funny thing football. We defended really well yesterday. Before the game I thought a point would have been a great result but to be awarded with all three is fantastic. A long way to go yet, and i'm taking nothing for granted. These early points all add up and will hopefully aid us staying up when everything inevitably falls apart. Some things I have noticed since now having the opportunity to watch in person PL football in 13 years... 1. Quality - the quality of football is generally outstanding. The standard of football I have seen from opposition teams have been on a whole new level compared to that seen in the Championship. The leap from League 1 to Championship is present but isn't huge. In the Championship, any team has a decent chance of winning in a game but in the Premier League it is not like this. My view is that the increased standards from the Championship to the Premier League is so large that it is inevitable that newly promoted teams struggle as they initially do not have the quality to stay. 2. Is it me or do PL players tend to fall like a bag of spuds? 3. Experiencing Success - So for the newly promoted teams, its staying up; established teams, its probably trying to "get into Europe", and for top teams, is winning but compared to the lower leagues I feel that life in the PL is completely stressful and actually some kind of success is not achieved all that often. Don't get me wrong, I would love the Blades to stay up and don't want to be relegated at all; but there is no feeling like winning the league like we did in L1 or win promotion from the Championship. In a way, I feel for supporters in clubs like Everton that never fear relegation but don't achieve much success. They never experience winning a league or being promoted. However, they also never have to experience losing to Carlisle in League 1 in the rain and freezing cold either. Anyway, Liverpool at home next (LOL). To not lose would be nothing short of a miracle. Definitely, enjoying the PL experience even if it is for the opportunity to watch world class teams and players at in-person at your own ground.
  4. Football Season 2019-20

Im obviously feeling both very excited and nervous this season. Especially after seeing Liverpool smash Norwich last night... Every pundit has written us off and placed us at 20th place. You never know though, we could escape relegation. In Wilder we trust. Maguire going to Man Utd is obviously massive for him. He was brought up and his family still lives in the same village as me.
  5. Super Mario Maker 2 -- June 2019

I've been enjoying this and its great fun playing through user created levels. The quality does seem a lot better compared to those created in the first game but that may be due to the increased numbers. The online multiplayer is just absolutely dire. Really frustrating that it the lag just makes it unplayable. I haven't got a creative bone in my body so i'm looking forward to trying out all of your levels!
  6. Football Season 2018/19

    Hi Premier League
  7. Yakuza 0 (PS4)

Majima is such a bad ass in this game. That first scene with him is so good. I've not played the other games but I hear he is a bit of a joke character. Which is an odd and absolutely different direction as a character from this game.
  8. Final Fantasy XV

This game was a huge disappointment for me. The story was a confusing mess and the side missions were full of pointless fetch quests. The more I think about it the more I think that I wasted so much time playing it in the first place.
  9. Yakuza 0 (PS4)

Im enjoying reading people's opinions on this. It is probably the biggest surprise of the generation for me. I loved it. I really need to buy the others.
  10. Horizon: Zero Dawn

I have now played through the entire game and also the DLC. I have very mixed feelings towards this game but I have come away thinking it was fantastic and actually want more. In my view, the game started off pretty strongly but became lost in the middle. I felt that the story was weak and woolly. The gameplay was very strong throughout. I also thought some of the side missions were a bit dull. I couldn't help comparing the game to Witcher 3. It uses so many of the ideas that game has. In my opinion the main story, the connection to the characters and the side missions are a lot stronger than HZD. I remember when this game was first released and a lot of people made comparisons to BOTW. I think I really benefited by playing the two games at completely different times as in my opinion they share very little and aim to achieve different things. As I said, I do think a better comparison is to W3. The fighting with the machines in this game is where it absolutely shines. I remember starting and feeling intimidated by a Watcher but then as the game went on I became more confident and skilful that I could easily take down a Thunderjaw. I loved it. The story became into its own in the final third when you find out why the world was the way it was etc. This was quality story telling. However, I feel that there was a case of too little and too late. They really could have gone to town on it but left it to the final third of the game. I was a little disappointed. Overall though it was a cracking game and these observations are just minor issues in the grand scheme of things. The DLC was quality - nice little story, great setting and fantastic new (and more difficult) machines.
  11. Metroid Prime 4 (Switch)

Not necessarily, the Switch is not even 2 years old. I think it will definitely be released in the last few years of the Switch's life, maybe its swan song with a port released for the successor to the Switch. Wii U was not chucked in the bin until after 4 years, I imagine the Switch will have similar lifespan to PS4 and 3DS.
  12. General Switch Discussion

To be honest, I am impressed with Nintendo's transparency on the issue with MP4. Just give me the HD Trilogy and i'll be happy. I'm not concerned about the Switch's schedule at all. There are lots being released and also we dont actually know what else that is currently unannounced being released. Personally I have a huge backlog and also not bought half the games I want to play for both Switch and PS4 due to lack of time.
  13. Nintendo Switch Online: NES

To be honest, I don't care about NES or SNES. What I want are N64 and GameCube. I mean I wish Nintendo broaden their horizons a bit in regards to their back catalogue. It especially makes sense now we have moved to a netflix based service.
  14. New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe

I picked this up despite having it on the Wii U. I really enjoyed it on the Wii U and after SMB 3 and World it is my favourite 2D Mario game. I don't want to put the Wii U on again. Switched this on and completed Acorn Plains. I am enjoying the game all over again.
  15. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

This game is just fantastic. Reminds me when I was younger playing through Melee. Everything about it - characters, stages and the modes make it all seem fresh. I missed out on Brawl but played 4. I hated that game as I found the single player really dull with hardly any substance. Ive been playing classic, world of light, spirit board and online. Having fun with this. The comparison with Smash 4 is night and day. I'm pretty average at the game but getting better. I managed to 7.5 on classic with ganondorf - an achievement!
  16. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

Received this game for xmas. Still not managed to play it due to xmas
  17. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

A week to go and I will finally have the game. Its been a little painful reading all about it on here and on twitter.
  18. PlayStation 4 Console Discussion

@Animal Witcher 3 is a must apart from the combat its a much better game than Horizon imo.
  19. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

Obviously looking forward to this but it will have to wait for xmas for me :(.
  20. Sega Ages (Summer M2)

Is there much point in these Sega Ages when the Mega Drive Collection is being released?
  21. Final Fantasy XV

The game was average at best, in fact looking back it was a disappointing take on the RPG open world genre. I wanted SE to move on straight away but obviously the cancelled DLC is disappointing to those that wanted more FFXV.
  22. Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu!

@Ronnie good to hear you are enjoying it. Its so much more special playing it with nostalgia glasses. Its a shame you never played the originals! I'm not very far into the game myself (just finished Mt. Moon) but every time I switch it on I remember how amazing it was seeing the battles in Pokemon Stadium and how I wished that the gameboy games looked like that...and now they do
  23. Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu!

So only played about 3 hours of this due to life but my thoughts: Its brilliant! Im loving it and it is so addictive. I have not been this excited to play a Pokemon game for years. I know it has nothing on BOTW or XC2 but the game looks great! It is clean, crisp and HD! Its decent to look at for Pokemon standards anyway. I love the Pokemon Stadium like battles. Really enjoying the tunes too! I think it is great that the Pokemon appear on screen rather than random battles. I am enjoying the Go catching mechanics. There is a surprisingly level of depth with this game. I have been playing Pokemon games since Red/Blue and its a shame to see the Pokemon community being so negative towards these games. I am finding them so much fun. I have never been into IV or natures etc. Maybe this is the game to get my head round them. I'm so glad I decided to pick this up. I was not going to due to all the negativity. Good job I decided to ignore.
  24. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

I really enjoyed the Direct. I'm having the game for xmas. First time i've been excited for Smash since Melee. I had the Wii U version and didn't play it very much. I found that the single player stuff was dull to be honest. This looks much better! Piranaha Plant made me laugh. It actually looks to be not a bad character. I'm happy that Walluigi didn't get announced - such a pointless character, who doesn't add anything. Excited to get the game! So much content. I have no idea how I will pick my main, there is so many characters to choose from.
