  1. The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom

Starting to question if I even wanna see this one through at this point 😕
  2. Planned Purchases for the rest of 2023

Pikmin 4 arrived today but I'm busy with Metroid Prime Remastered so I'm not sure when I'll get to it 😅 Tears of the Kingdom can continue to rot on my shelf along with Advance Wars until I'm feeling the desire to return to the relative tedium 😐 For the rear of the year, I have the following games on my radar: Ghost Trick Pikmin Pikmin 2 Super Mario Bros. Wonder Metal Gear Solid Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater Wario Ware: Move it! I may also pick up EA FC 24 if the improvements over FIFA 19-23 are substantial enough give the move to Frostbite and, though I'm not really in need of adding any more RPGs to my life ever again, Super Mario RPG might sneak into my collection. EDIT I'm gonna let the spelling error slide..
  3. There's almost certainly variation between what is possible, what I want and what it will eventually be but I'll try to outline something within the realms of possibility 😅 Name: Nintendo Switch Plus Release: October 2024 I envisage a console very similar in style and concept to the Switch OLED with capabilities similar to but hopefully slightly beyond that of the PS4/XBOX One. I feel like I want it to be capable or playing almost anything and everything, including acceptable ports from rival platforms and also all legacy content. Part of this will be possible due to the new Joy-Con Plus which will be a lot like the current controller but with slightly improved sticks and, preferably, analogue ZL and ZR buttons. The other difference will be (and I'm not sure how necessary or feasible this is) a pointer at the top. I can only really see this being achieved by making the R button about half the length it currently is and having a small camera directly beside it. Would your fingers get in the way? Quite possibly.. Anyway, that would bring with it the possibility of Wii ports or versions of the games on NSO along with GC games too which make nice use of the analogue shoulder buttons. Am I going to be able to play Nintendo Land and Starfox Zero on this thing? Absolutely The dock will have greater significance than ever before this time. Just as how the Wii U Gamepad communicated with the console, the Nintendo Switch Plus will be able to communicate wirelessly with the dock to not allow those Wii U type experiences as well as offer the opportunity for dual screen gaming with the eventual DS and 3DS inclusions on NSO Plus! OK, genius.. you haven't even considering Virtual Boy. Haven't I..? A separately purchasable headset dock will allow for the Switch Plus console to slip into it to give a just about functional VR option, albeit primitive compared to much more expensive alternatives on the market. Not only will it finally give us the Virtual Boy games that should have made it to 3DS, the wireless communication with the dock connected to the TV will allow for other players to interact with the player wearing the headset by playing on the TV. All purchases made on the current Switch will carry forward, as will all of the access to the NSO apps, but the on board storage will still only increase to 128GB. The dock will also have a seperate Micro SD port the allow for even more storage beyond the internal storage of the system and Micro SD inserted into the Switch Plus. It will make it easier to transfer games between the dock storage and handheld storage without having to keep deleting and downloading games when the fridge is full! Ultimately, it all sounds like wishful thinking stemming from a desire to be able to access everything all from one place and not be limited by performance or control input. Do I think it will happen..? Unfortunately not. I do think the next console will be similar in form to the current Switch but I also believe Nintendo will hit us with the sort of twist that none of us had even contemplated. I'm excited either way. It feels like it's time!
  4. The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom

Has anyone else dropped off this game extremely hard..? I enjoyed Breath of the Wild as a right place, right time sort of experience but never would have considered it as the greatest Zelda game. I'd have said Ocarina of Time, Wind Waker and Skyward Sword were my favourites by a long way and then it was perhaps in the running as the best of the rest. While we never saw much of Tears of the Kingdom before release, I was fairly certain in the last few years that it would surpass Breath of the Wild due to an expectation from myself that it would probably incorporate a few more of the classic elements of the franchise and inevitably lead to a very special experience. That may ultimately end up to be the case. Heck, this was my tweet on 21st May: It's hard not to be impressed by what the game is doing but are all of the elements adding up to an experience that is continually fun and enjoyable for me? As it currently stands, I'm not sure! I reached the 25 hour mark not that long after that tweet and I've barely been back. In fact, I haven't had any desire to dip in at all this week and that in itself has felt very disheartening. Rather than force it and potentially damage the game for myself going forward, I think I'm going to continue to take a break from it until I feel ready to jump in again. I have plenty of other things to play but I can't help having this lingering feeling that it's not supposed to be like this..
  5. Your Gaming Diary 2023

I just wanted to show my appreciation for this quote 😄
  6. The controls not mapping well to a modern controller is the only thing that can prevent this from being the best release of the year
  7. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe

I love that Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has been getting new tracks after all this time but I almost feel like it's somehow making the overall product inferior in quality, in a strange way. I've never really touched Mario Kart Tour but basically all of these tracks being released that are based on real cities aren't really gelling with me and while in theory the different routes on each lap could be great, I'm finding myself not really appreciating it. The remainder of the tracks are of varying quality but I'd say very few of them have been able to stand up to the excellence of the original courses. Don't get me wrong.. I'm still looking forward to seeing what else is to come and continually having more reasons to return to what is almost certainly my favourite Mario Kart title. I'm just finding each wave is falling a little flat each time!
  8. Genuinely might be the reason I never go back to play it.. 😐
  9. PlayStation WrapUp - 2022

I probably spent more time browsing the Nintendo eShop than I played on PlayStation this year..
  10. Your Gaming Diary 2022

I would say so far that I'm probably not enjoying is as much as Yoshi's Crafted World but then that game didn't really click completely for me until just recently! I kind of expect a similar trajectory here but slightly worried at how my lack of skill with some of the abilities might prevent me from beating target times in later challenges 😳
  11. Your Gaming Diary 2022

I would say it's similar.. perhaps maybe even a little easier..? Like the main game, I played through it all on Normal but I've never braved the Expert difficulty. Honestly..? I might some day. The game is too amazing not to use it as an excuse to return to it some day. You'd be crazy to skip the game just because people say it is difficult, @Glen-i. It is certainly challenging but in a satisfying way. You'll cry sometimes when you see the progress bar after a defeat and know you were within a bullet or 2 from success but you'll hit retry and be straight back in amongst it all again. It's wonderful 🙂
  12. The Woooooorld Cuuuuup

That short little period of time after 70 minutes when both Spain and Germany were being eliminated was a real WOW sort of moment for me and probably the first little spark I've really felt for this World Cup. Hopefully there's still some fun to come in the knockout stages
  13. No More Heroes 3

If you've been following the Gaming Diary thread, you'll perhaps be aware that I finished No More Heroes 3 in the early hours of this morning. You may also have noted that my enthusiasm dwindled with each tweet that I shared! I dipped my toe into the first hour last year expecting it to be one of my highlights of 2021 but I never got around to playing more of it until only a few weeks ago. Back at that time, it felt like it was gonna be as wild and crazy as expected and the return to form the franchise needed after only really excelling with the original on Wii. I was wrong Is the game wild and crazy? Absolutely yes, but not in a way that elevated the game beyond the sum of its highly questionable parts. The combat is largely satisfying but the scenarios in which you get to perform are so rigid and repetitive that I grew tired of the formula pretty quickly. Locate and fight a few designated battles in the embarrassingly poor 'open world', carry out a couple of random tasks to raise funds (which often wasn't even necessary) and then pay to enter the next ranking battle. Rinse and repeat. The original game had you feeling like you were really building up for each battle and, when you'd get there, you'd really have to concentrate to take down each assassin in an often long and intense fight knowing that one or two mistakes could see you in trouble. Here, I didn't really feel much of a sense of threat or triumph from the ranking battles and when those appear to be the main hook to keep your progressing, that's a big problem. Despite offering up several unique scenarios to take down the eclectic cast of aliens, the game rarely, if ever, knocked it out of the park. To have each episode punctuated with regular and increasingly grating credits sequences followed by watching irrelevant chatter on a mocked up CRT TV quickly became tiresome and this feeling was further emphasized by knowing that once you were back in Travis' apartment it was just going to be the same routine of going down the pole to enhance your abilities and then outside to find the next selection of designated battles marked on the map. Honestly, the game is such a disappointment and with all the insane tangents that Suda 51 seems to want to take you on, nothing ever really lands. It just feels crazy for the sake of it. Aw well.. at least the icon on the Switch menu is cool 😅
  14. Your Gaming Diary 2022

I could probably go into detail now but I'll wait until I've finished it before I share my overall thoughts. What I will say is that for a game that goes out of its way to be crazy and off the wall, I feel like I'm just going through the motions right now
  15. Your Gaming Diary 2022

I'll stop reading there. Maybe not a great idea to be throwing around spoilers when, like I said, I'm only a few hours in. Thankfully, I've already experienced that bit but I'm not risking the rest of your post!
  16. Your Gaming Diary 2022

Speaking of The Last of Us, I recently tried to resume my save file of Part II on PS4 (I think I'm around 7-8 hours in) and, not for the first time, I'm finding it very difficult to get back into it Even at this stage, I think I've managed to avoid any spoilers regarding the story but I'd still like to get the game done at some point before I inevitably stumble upon something! Maybe I'll try again after I clear No More Heroes 3 which is unfortunately becoming a bit of a repetitive slog itself. I really didn't expect that from it!
