  1. As for more "contemporary" suggestions in the realm of traditional film making, I'd highly recommed checking out Amour, Holy Motors, The Master or Beasts Of The Southern Wild, all released in 2012.

    Edit: As for alternatives to Netflix, I have no answers, I'm afraid...

     

    However, if you're asking for movie recommendations, there's 2 ways to go as far as cerebral goes... there's movies that are hard to understand and force you to pay attention if you want to really understand what's happening (like exemplified in the works of David Lynch, Luis Buñuel or Alejandro Jodorowsky), and then there's movies that are fairly easy to comprehend, but raise questions that challenge your mind and constantly leave you questioning the way you live your life... these can either be non-narrative pieces like Baraka, Home and

    or more "traditional" works such as 2001: A Space Odyssey, Ikiru or Satantango.
