  1. My update has been running for an hour and is only a 1/4 to 1/3 done. I wish I'd connected a cable and done a wired update but I'm getting 14mb from my 20mb wifi connection at present so I'd have thought that would be enough but this is painful.

Edit - scrap that. It just completed despite saying it was only a third through!

  2. That's because Super Paper Mario was a fantastic game

    [awaits onslaught of abuse]

I actually loved Super Paper Mario. Never understood what all the complaining was about.

Can't wait for Sticker Star. Paper Mario is my favourite in the Mario franchise. I think I'm more hyped for this than I am for the WiiU.

  3. Only NintendoLand and NSMBU are nailed on launch purchases for me. I'm only interested in Wii U exclusives or games where the gaming experience is significantly enhanced by the presence of Nintendo peripherals. Anything else, I can buy for XBox/PS3.

I did consider not buying a console at launch but got sucked in. I would buy eventually for the Mario franchise alone so I may as well do it now. I'm hoping we'll get some good adventure or puzzle-style games like we did for the Wii e.g. Zack & Wiki and Kororinpa.

  4. Wow - I'm glad it's not just me then. I always feel like such a lightweight as I rarely finish games. I'm not even sure why I'm contemplating the Wii U as I have loads left to complete on the Wii. Here's my list of games I'd like to either finish or start. These are all games I already own and I don't anticipate making any new purchases.

LoZ: Skyward Sword - not started

Resi 4 - I have this for both PS2 (played for a couple of hours) and Wii (not played at all)

Eledees - Got about 2/3 through and horribly stuck on a boss level. Returned to it a few times but couldn't overcome it so not played for a few years now. Really enjoyed the game though and would love to complete it

Zack & Wiki - Again, got quite close to the end - 3/4 through? - and got stuck. Tried in vain until I got fed up and not played for a few years. One of my favourite Wii games so would love to finish

Marble Madness (think it was called this - sequel to Kororinpa) - loved Kororinpa and achieved 100% within a week. Never finished the sequel

Pikmin - think I have both 1 & 2 but only played for an hour. May try and get into it prior to Pikmin 3 but probably won't have time so will just pick it up on the Wii U

Super Mario Galaxy 1 & 2 - about 1/2 way through first one and not very far into the second. Got stuck on a boss level in first game and couldn't overcome

De Blob - I liked this but my Wii packed up when I was playing it. Once my system had been returned by Nintendo, I was into something else. Also, I have a slight, highly irrational, fear that if I put this disc in the machine, it'll break my console again

Super Mario Bros Wii - playing this at the moment as I've had it wrapped in its cellophane since launch. Prob won't finish it though as I'll move onto the Wii U version

Dewy's Adventure - still early on in this game. May revisit but not high priority

Mercury Meltdown Revolution - enjoyed this but probably about half way through

Okami - enjoyed it well enough but wasn't driven to finish it. Chances of picking it up again probably quite slim

Games I'd have liked to play but won't now are:

    The Last Story

    Xenoblade Chronicles

With so many games to finish and other consoles (including the Wii U) to attend to, I don't want them enough to warrant the purchase.

I swore that I wouldn't accumulate Wii games without finishing the ones I had first. Didn't quite happen though. Maybe a new resolution for the Wii U perhaps.

Part of the problem when you leave off a game for so long is that you are less likely to have the skill level required to re-enter it at the same point. Two of the games above (SMG1 & Eledees), I'd love to finish but am stuck on a boss. Three years later, I'm hardly likely to overcome those bosses when I have to learn the game again from scratch :(. I know they are not particularly complicated control-wise but you do grow in skill as the game progresses. Zack & Wiki is the exception for 'stuckness' as the learning curve isn't big so I could probably get that finished.

I also have some Gamecube games I still need to finish so I've enough to keep me going for decades!

  5. I love Paper Mario so am praying we get a new one. I really enjoyed Eledees although I got hopelessly stuck at one point and never made it to the end. A sequel would be fab. It's games like that and De Blob that set the Wii apart for me. I'd also add Zak and Wiki - please let there be a sequel to this.

I haven't used my Wii in months but am starting to get hyped now for the new system. I just hope we get lots more of the unique games you never see on other consoles. I already have a PS3 and XBox so am not so fussed for the big cross-platform titles. I like seeing Nintendo offer something different so will be looking for this to continue with the next-gen machine.

  6. Does anyone know of anywhere (on or offline) that's doing offers on Super Mario 3D Land, or LofZ: OoT please? Also, any tips on where to pick up the Professor Layton games cheaply (other than the first one, which I already have) would be gratefully received.

    I only have MK7 for 3DS so far :(.

    Thanks in advance guys.

  7. Interesting reviews for the game and some conflicting opinions about the online play. Like others, I have issues with some who marked MK7 down for failing to innovate when they've praised other games for 'not fixing what ain't broken'. Fans get nervous if their favourite games are changed too much. The addition of a shell can cause a commotion in Mario Kart and with good reason.

Nonetheless, I couldn't give too much of a damn about the reviews. I played the game at Eurogamer Expo - it was great and this is the game that's going to make me buy the 3DS. Is anywhere online doing a bundle deal for the 3DS + MK7? There are loads for Mario Land, which I'll prob pick up eventually but finances are a bit tight so only want to get MK7 to start with.

  8. Sorry, saw the release date after I'd posted. My other half read about it in a mag in the hairdressers and the rrp was £45 but Amazon seem to have it for a tenner cheaper.

The review in ONM is pants but that's to be expected as it's a direct competitor to Nintendo's own Wii Fit and cheaper too. Will probably just wait and see what others think first. I have Wii Fit but to be honest only use it to weigh myself. I joined a fitness bootcamp in my local park, which is a killer and will get me properly fit but there are 3 week gap between camps so I'm looking for something to motivate me during that time. If I get Sports Active, I'll combine it will real-world jogging anyway as I don't think that jogging on the spot stuff works that well. We use resistance bands at bootcamp and they are really versatile so I was partly tempted by this game because it comes with a band and related exercises.

  9. Yayyyyy! I'm so happy about this. The first Kororinpa was fabulous and one of the few games that I've actually completed 100%. Usually I get bored somewhere along the way or it gets a bit too hard and I get fed up of starting over ;-).

Not heard of the other game before but it also looks pretty good in a spangly sort of way.

Is the games drought finally over? I was averaging a game a month between the launch of the Wii and spring of this year but I haven't bought anything since Mario Kart.

  10. I'm so jealous of you guys. Just got home to find that the postie tried to deliver it whilst I was at work. I've now got to wait until tomorrow morning to pick it up. Oh well, at least it won't distract me from the work I need to do this afternoon and I'll have another evening of PES before it makes way for Mario Kart. Played a few games of MK DS this morning to get me in the mood.

  11. I got it the day it launched but only got chance to play it properly today as I've been too busy. I've got too many games at the moment but decided to break off before doing the last chapter of Super Paper Mario to play this as it's a bit less involved. I've also got Galaxy but may leave that until Christmas now when I can do it justice.

It's refreshing to have a game that I can pick up for five minutes when I want or play it for an hour (aching arm permitting). It feels like a real workout in the vein of Wii Sports and I think it might be hit when I take it to my folks' at Christmas.

I was always a fan of button-mashing athletics games in the past and this game takes it to a new level. I like that there's lots to unlock and missions to complete. The choice of characters is great and watching my Mii doing the long jump is a hoot - I do think the Mii thing is real added value and certainly got my other half interested in having a go.

Unlike others, I don't actually mind the table tennis; it seems easy to master but a good challenge. Admittedly, you could do lots more with it and the controls don't work as well as Wii tennis but it's fine. I love the field events and the track and swimming is great but knackering. I'm still on 'beginner' level and haven't unlocked any new sports yet so it's early days but so far, so good.
