  1. Getting into Linux

Mint is always based off the newest Ubuntu, it just includes some stuff that makes your life easier (Ubuntu won't include packages to play MP3s out of the box, etc). It also looks a lot nicer, if you ask me.
  2. Your town

Marlborough's a really nice, quiet town, you just have to make sure you don't run into Pete Doherty, not because he'll do anything to you, but because no doubt you'd have to fight the urge to punch him in the face and end up getting arrested
  3. What Were You Doing This Time A Decade Ago?

I was sat on my parents bed watching the TV with all the fireworks and shit (well, at the moment the clock moved over to 2000). What I was doing right now, 10 years ago, I don't really remember. I would have been 14
  4. Marketing and adverts etc

I don't usually watch TV, but very recently I witnessed the aforementioned Go compare commercial, and it was reach for the mute button as if your life depended on it bad. Vaguely related - Whenever I use a browser without adblock, I always realise how fucking /noisy/ the internet has become, an ad here, a popup there, all kinds of shit.. The newest annoyance now is those stupid popups INSIDE flash applets, like on youtube. Damn them!
  5. Getting into Linux

I'd go with Mint too, it's the best desktop distribution I'm aware of
  6. Annoying trends.

Case in point, I talked to someone who recently had his brother get out of prison after 10 years, he came out, and heard iPod was the in thing, so traded one for weed. (What a jewel!). Hasn't got a computer. Never used one. Steve Jobs is so fucking cool he can sell a product to somebody who can't even use it
  7. Buying a new PC

Perfectly reasonable machine for the money really If you know a student or indeed ARE a student, do yourself a favour and get a cheap copy of Windows 7. That said, they have the oem version of 7 Home Premium for £65 there as it is, which is pretty damn reasonable
  8. Post Your Purchases

stop making her sound more attractive
  9. Yes you bet your ass its another laptop thread

This, for the love of god this. ANY Intel graphics will be REALLY, REALLY bad if you even game casually. They're perfectly fine if you never game, which is why they are common
  10. Post Your Purchases

I have the boxset with EVERY season. =D (I've had it a while though, so, completely irrelevant to this thread).
  11. Mobile Phone Chat

I have an Android phone, and while Android is neat (flashy, market full of useless apps so you too can pretend to be cool like people with iPhones), I would highly recommend getting a decent Windows mobile phone if you want to watch videos at all. Android's video performance is absolutely terrible compared to Windows Mobile, even if only because you can get CorePlayer on Windows Mobile. Also, I like physical keyboards, and the Touch Pro 2 has apparently the best keyboard of any device. Windows Mobile lacks polish, but HTC do a good job of tarting it up these days. If you couldn't give a shit about playing videos, and you don't care about a physical keyboard, Android handsets are a pretty fine option
  12. Buying a Laptop

I have a pile of laptops at work (acers) that have all the same hinge/screen surround failure. Some of the hinges even snap, yes, the metal. I don't think much of acer build quality, but they ARE cheap. Also, the person with the failed graphics card in the dell, if it's a swappable module, just buy one off ebay, they're piss easy to fit. Also, EVERY LAPTOP MANUFACTURER has a "monopoly" on their parts, because they're almost always custom designs, so that statement means absolutely nothing
  13. Buying a Laptop

You know one person that had a Dell laptop that broke? I've worked with literally hundreds of Dell Latitudes over the years, and I have nothing but glowing recommendation for their hardware
  14. getting a mac!

I still think Firefox is best. Safari is a good Mac citizen, and thus uses shit like alt+r for refresh instead of F5 like any sane person would prefer Also, the addons for Firefox for me personally make it better than any other browser by default Also, just so you know, Photoshop is faster on Windows currently than on a Mac of the same spec, because only Windows currently has a 64 bit version of Photoshop, but hey, lets go round banging that drum that Macs are so far and away the best for [iNSERT TASK HERE]
  15. Anime and manga discussion

Watch HELLSING ULTIMATE. It's not just "a bit of fun" it's one of the most awesome things to grace human eyeballs. Seriously, much better. Currently 6 parts out, watched them all <3
  16. Google Chrome OS revealed

Wrong. Flash. Flash will consume thousands of unborn babies if left unchecked. Flash is singlehandedly the reason why old machines are not so great online, and netbooks chug
  17. Alan Wake (360)

I've had it on pre-order since 20th November 2008 (longest pre-order ever?) So hype doesn't interest me, I know I want it, so I'll just be surprised when it one day drops onto my mat
  18. Google Chrome OS revealed

I don't know why you expected it to be any better - this is EXACTLY what I thought it was going to be. Basically an OS that just presents itself purely as a browser.
  19. New PC :P

The best thing about your setup though... definitely the salt and vinegar chipsticks! You absolute genius!
  20. Are violent video games damaging to society?

I really couldn't agree more. Absorbing bullshit TV is a genuine blight, and gaming really can be a whole lot more
  21. Are violent video games damaging to society?

    I really fucking doubt it
  22. N-Europe Winter Meet 2009?

Untrue. Everyone knows Birmingham exists, they just are thankful that the m6 is a convenient way to pass through it without needing to stop
  23. Post Your Purchases

Nokia n900 ordered, as far as I can ascertain, by far the best smartphone on the market
  24. Windows 7

When I set my dad's PC up from scratch, I installed Firefox but made it look a bit IE7, not that it even matters, since he used to use SlimBrowser, which is an IE shell, and looks nothing like IE (has tabs) anyway He uses whatever I make him use, which is currently firefox 3.5 + adblock/download statusbar/personal menu/ and such, used FEBE to copy the exact same config to his laptop as well
