  1. Super Mario Bros. Wonder (20th October 2023)

@darksnowman It's still a bit of a grind but the best level I found for purple coins was The Sugar star Trial in W3 - you can get about 20 coins per run so I managed to complete all the standees in a couple of hours
  2. Super Mario Bros. Wonder (20th October 2023)

Got the last wonder seeds and purple coins last night, thanks to a very helpful and patient online player - the way they've implemented the online is really cool. Only gripe really is the grinding for purple coins to complete the collection of standees, is there any quicker way to do it than running through one level over and over?
  3. General Retro Discussion

Christ, the only thing that would make me buy an Analogue console and they actually go ahead and make it. Not looking forward to the pricing, will surely be their most expensive system yet, but I'm going to have to order one, aren't I? Did they go out of their way to stress 'physical only' when they announced their other systems? Just wondering if the rule on being able to run backup ROMs is something that they'll change their minds on eventually.
  4. You'd think they would want to do something with the likes of Tony Hawk, Crash and Spyro though - reviving those series with new entries will add some much needed variety to their software lineup (and would also hopefully come to other platforms, even if not at launch) Definitely worrying news in general though, the audacity of them to say its going to offer consumers more options going forward, when the endgame is obviously to restrict new game releases to only being available on Game Pass (at which point they'll jack up the price for a monthly subscription)
  5. Playstation 5 Console Discussion

The disc model looks even more conspicuous now, don't think there's any doubt that they designed the digital first then just bolted on a disc drive afterwards. It's telling that they only talk about volume rather than height given its only fractionally shorter than the launch model. The only reason to be tempted to replace my launch model with one of these, apart from slightly reduced power consumption, is the extra internal storage but M.2 drives are getting so cheap now it would be easier and cheaper to just buy one of them instead. It really is all about making manufacturing less complicated for Sony though, no real benefit to consumers besides being able to upgrade a digital model to use discs
  6. Super Mario Bros. Wonder (20th October 2023)

This is weird, I got an email from the UK Nintendo store earlier saying that they were cancelling one of the pre-order bonuses - apparently they ran into production issues with the Elephant power up stress ball so they decided not to go through with making them. I'm actually a bit disappointed, I thought it would be a cool collectible to own
  7. If you go raw processing power then the Switch is about 60% more powerful in handheld mode than an Xbox 360 (Switch being 393 GFLOPS vs Xbox' 240 GFLOPS) so its very much a halfway house between the 360/PS3 and XB1/PS4 generations. According to the leaked specs the Switch 2 will be about equal to a PS4 in terms of teraflops but raw power isn't the most important thing these days - hence why the Switch turned out to be a much more capable machine than people feared when the specs initially leaked back in 2016
  8. In terms of raw power it'll comparable to PS4 & Xbox One, yeah, but the CPU will be much more modern & capable, as well as the GPU being able to take advantage of NVIDIA's recent innovations in upscaling and ray tracing which should give the Switch 2 a leg up over the original when it comes to third party ports. There will still undoubtedly be a gulf in capabilities between Switch 2 & PS5/XSX but the gap will be closer this time round so we should get more of the 'current gen' big hitters that won't be as compromised as games like The Witcher 3 and DOOM were on the original Switch
  9. amiibo (NFC)

The Noah & Mio double pack is up for pre-order on the My Nintendo Store, did they go up straight after the direct? I just noticed them when I went to pre-order Mario Wonder so was surprised to see that they were available
  10. I was two feet from the line, nailed on for my first win, when I blew up and crashed out. This looks phenomenal on the OLED though, love the artstyle
  11. Another Code Recollection (19th January 2024)

I'm interested to know who the developers are, would be cool if Nintendo had brought together some of the original team. I'm sure they'll have some interesting new twists in the puzzle solving, the Switch has plenty of hardware features they could use (might well be another game that takes advantage of the IR sensor)
  12. Genuinely can't believe we're getting a full on remake of both Another Code games - absolutely incredible! Princess Peach: Showtime looks great too, and I'll definitely be getting Thousand Year Door seeing as I've never played it before F-Zero 99 is a genius idea, bit disappointed that it doesn't seem like you can barge into your opponents though New Mario vs Donkey Kong looks cool too but I know absolutely nothing about that series I still think they're going to announce that the first Luigi's Mansion is coming to Switch alongside LM2, will probably shadow drop it in a direct just before launch like they did with Pikmin 1 + 2 I thought it was an enjoyable direct on the whole, but there weren't any real surprises for me apart from Another Code & F-Zero 99
  13. Thing is the leaked specs show that even at the same clock speeds as the original Switch the successor will be more powerful than a PS4 Pro when docked so when you consider the more modern CPU and graphics technology things could be much closer to PS5/XS than the original Switch was to the likes of the PS4. I don't think the Matrix demo will look as good on the new Switch as it does on a PS5 but it can clearly get close enough with DLSS for Nintendo and NVIDIA to use it to show developers what the new hardware is capable of And by my calculations, if the new Switch is more powerful than a PS4 Pro then it would be as powerful as 478 GameCubes taped together
  14. Really looking forward to seeing what EPD and Monolith can do with the new hardware, Odyssey, TOTK and Xenoblade 3 are already stunning - could get some absolutely jaw dropping titles
  15. General Switch Discussion

So the battery on my launch day Switch seemed to be on its last legs, it got to the point where it would drain from 100% charge to empty in the less than 20 mins it takes me to do my daily chores on Animal Crossing. I've replaced a broken screen on my phone a couple of times before and I read through the guide for replacing the Switch battery and it looked more straightforward so I figured I might as well do it myself. Bought a new battery and some tools but when I started I hit a bit of a roadblock, the middle screw on the joy con rail (both sides) just wouldn't turn at all. The screws were definitely stripped, no matter what I tried I couldn't get any tension on them. My Dad suggested drilling them out, which I was cautious about but I knew that the Switch was dead if I couldn't replace the battery so I decided to go about doing so very carefully. I covered the rest of the rails with masking tape and taped a microfiber cloth around the body of the Switch so the screen didn't get scratched then we got to work trying to drill them out. The heads came off pretty easily, we didn't need to go deep at all, but it didn't help loosen the backplate at all. We tried again a few more times, getting incrementally deeper, but neither screw would budge, the backplate was as inflexible as it had been the first time we tried the drill. We had one more go, at a loss for what to do, and suddenly there was smoke on one side, then sparks on the other. We'd drilled straight through the frame. Worried that I'd destroyed my Switch I was relieved that we were at least able to take off the backplate so I could assess the damage. The battery had definitely been knicked by the drill, we were lucky there wasn't anything more dramatic than a brief spark. Most worrying though was that we looked to have drilled into the motherboard on the other side, right near the storage chip, so I wasn't exactly optimistic about the repair. I disconnected the old battery then took the rest of the Switch outside to blow off any debris. The actual repair was really easy, besides the stubborn screws levering out the old battery was the toughest part but it didn't take that long. I connected the new battery to test it out and it booted up just fine so I thought I'd got away with it. I glued the new battery in, put everything back together and turned the Switch back on. All seemed fine but when I tested out the WiFi connection the speeds were abysmally slow and then I realised I couldn't connect any controllers wirelessly. I figured I might have nudged one of the antennae loose but after reopening the Switch nothing looked out of place. I took a look at the diagrams and teardowns online and noticed that the antenna cable ran along the joy con rail, right past where we drilled through to the frame so I feel like I've probably cut through the cable. You can buy replacement WiFi/Bluetooth antennae so I will attempt a repair but it's a much more involved process, you have to strip literally everything else out of the shell. I thought I'd be happy enough to use it as is in the meantime but the WiFi is so screwy that it won't even connect in my room and I'd have no chance of being able to play docked while I couldn't connect any controllers so I reluctantly bought a brand new OLED. Long story short, drilling into your Switch probably isn't a good idea - but the OLED seems pretty nice
  16. Super Mario Bros. Wonder (20th October 2023)

Sad news but it seems like it was at least partly Charles' decision. Won't be quite the same without him voicing Mario and the gang though I would be very, very surprised if they do cast Pratt in future Mario games, besides his voice being off he would also command too high a few for Nintendo to even consider it an option so I think we'll be safe from that hell becoming a reality
  17. I'm not normally one to complain about frame rates but in this case it's completely unacceptable to limit the game to 30 FPS considering they all ran at 60 on Xbox 360 with no issues - 720/60 should have been the bare minimum for Konami to aim for Any chance they patch these at some point down the line to run at a higher frame rate?
  18. Red Dead Redemption

I watched a brief analysis of the Switch version and it at least seems to be a competent port - running at 1080p docked and 720p handheld at a constant 30fps - so it isn't the shitshow that we feared after the GTA trilogy debacle
  19. Baldur's Gate 3 (PC out now/PS5 September 6th)

I've never played a CRPG or D&D, although have been tempted to try Divinity in the past, but all the praise that Baldur's Gate 3 is getting has definitely got me interested. I don't have a capable PC so PS5 is about my only option but if reviewers say the controls translate well then I will more than likely buy a copy. Doesn't seem like it's getting a physical release so deals are hard to come by at the moment
  20. Pokémon Presents - August 8th, 2pm GMT

At least Detective Pikachu looks like it'll be decent, shame they haven't ported the first game to Switch alongside it. Pretty painful presentation though, what was the significance of the shoes during the Pokémon GO section? They lingered on them for ages
  21. Red Dead Redemption

Seems like a pretty minimal port, I played it on PS3 several years ago but never got round to playing Undead Nightmare so might get this eventually to play that (if it goes on sale) Just hope it runs better than the GTA Trilogy, I wrapped that up recently by playing San Andreas and it's still pretty rough
  22. Pokémon Presents - August 8th, 2pm GMT

    Hey You Pikachu, surely
  23. More fuel to the fire, definitely seems like the next Switch will be coming at some point next year. The reaction in the comments in the articles and on Resetera is frankly ridiculous though, people taking it as gospel that there won't be any backwards compatibility and losing their rag about the possibility of it only launching with an LED screen. Besides some pretty solid rumours about the chip Nintendo will be using (Nvidia Tegra T239) we know literally nothing else about the hardware or Nintendo's plans to support original Switch software, the way people jump the gun is just moronic. Personally, given Nintendo's track record in previous generations (particularly the DS and Wii) I would be very surprised if they didn't support Switch software, I think the only doubt is whether patches to take advantage of the more powerful hardware are free or not. I think at the bare minimum original Switch software will run in compatibility mode (ala non-patched PS4 games on PS4 Pro & PS5) where they run as they do on standard Switch hardware.
  24. Everybody 1-2-Switch!

That's a lot more promotion than I expected them to give this game, does look pretty bare bones too - those 'influencers' were really forcing themselves to look like they were enjoying it
  25. Everybody 1-2-Switch!

I'm not sure enough outlets will even bother to review it for it to count. They must have made some improvements since the article about the dire development so it might not be quite as disastrous but it still seems like a game they'd have been better off burying - it's not like Nintendo can't afford to take the hit financially. My fear is that it'll still sell more than Xenoblade ever will
