  1. Holiday Memories

Now I see them. :-) You've managed to make travelling look cool, even though it's something I'm not particularly interested in.
  2. Holiday Memories

Might just be me @Ashley, but I can't see any of your images. None of them are loading in.
  3. From looking at my facebook feed I can say with the absolute certainty of anecdotal evidence that people (not only the youth) have not understood the socialising rules for the last couple of months, and that must be a contributing factor. The rule of six is barely a change. It was up to six of multiple households [outside only], or up to 30 if from just two different households [inside or outside]. Now it's up to six of multiple households [inside or outside]. I see the main problem as there being a serious lapse in communication about still staying 2m away from anyone not in your household. All over my social feeds I see friends sat next to each other, or adult children hugging older parents, kids from different families crawling all over each other, and so on, and so on. And then they're unironically tagging these posts with things like #socialdistance. It's a massive failing from government that these people don't understand they're still breaking rules.
  4. good stuff thread.

Was going to react to this post, but was in a dilemma over whether it should be "sad" or "like!" I've never had surgery, and it terrifies me. I think I'll probably need knees replacing eventually and that's a far cry from anything to do with bowels. But my son has had plenty of surgery, and surgeons are just miracle people.
  5. Lego!

Mr brother-in-law works for Ubisoft in Newcastle in the UK, and he said they send things to him fairly regularly, Hyper Scape stuff most recently.
  6. General Movie Thread

We watched Spirited Away yesterday, that's on there. :-) I think Howl's Moving Castle might be too. Cinema Paradiso is foreign I think (I think I remember we watched it with subs), but you're right - there's very few. I've seen a lot of the films already so for some it's more of a check for me that they still hold up, and I'm glad that some of them do. Some don't though - Jaws was a bit of a let down, as was Mad Max. Inglourious Basterds is so satisfying, get it cracked out!
  7. good stuff thread.

I see you're saving for a house so this may not be useful now, but one of the best things I ever did financially was when I paid off my student loans I started paying the same amount into a savings account each month. I didn't let myself get used to have that extra money each month, and after a few years it's now an appreciable amount.
  8. General Movie Thread

Close to the start of lockdown I saw this photo on reddit: https://imgur.com/a/chPKlox My wife and I have been working our way through it, in order, watching every movie. I'm not sure who came up with this list but there are some films on there only because of their historical value. Viewing them now without having seen them prior is not enjoyable. E.g. The Great Dictator, or Citizen Kane. There's also some stuff on there that is just guff. E.g. Yesterday we watched Hachi: A Dog's Tale, and Before Sunrise is one of the worst movies I've ever seen. The best ones we've watched so far (one per row!), IMO, have been Groundhog Day, Inglourious Bastards, No Country For Old Men, and Interstellar.
  9. What Have You Bought?

It's one of those things that I'm not ever planning to go without again. I get such joy from closing it up with a load of dirty dishes, knowing that I'll not have to stand at the sink washing up. I have friends that say they enjoy washing up, but they are FREAKS.
  10. What Have You Bought?

I kinda bought something this week. I say kinda because really it was my daughter with her savings, but I got to push the button. Got this: https://ao.com/product/fx505dthn484t-asus-laptop-gold-77152-251.aspx Which is a great deal when you factor in the £50 cashback. It's a bit of a steal really. It arrived and it seems very nice. Almost overkill for what my daughter wants - super smooth Minecraft, Terraria and Roblox. My only issue with it is that the wifi seems a bit rubbish. I can stand 2 feet from the router and it "only" gets 50Mbps download speed (just checked my work laptop, and two rooms away it gets 200Mbps). Did some digging and apparently the realtek wifi card they use is a bit rubbish with certain routers. Not sure whether I want to tear it apart and replace just yet, or make her put up with slightly lower speeds than the rest of us get.
  11. Pandemic Perks

Clearly a difficult line to tread in this thread as you don't want to appear to be too gloating over how well things have turned out for you, when thousands have died, people have lost jobs, and people have really struggled with social aspects .... But yeah, overall positive for me too. Working from home has been absolutely eye opening. I love the commute of 0 minutes. I love not having the hum of the office. I love stopping for a few minutes to have a chat with the fam. We've used Microsoft Teams a ton to stay in touch with other colleagues. I've started playing Fortnite online with a handful of work friends that previously wouldn't touch it. My productivity has increased. I've missed the free gym at work, but I've been going out for lunch on my bike - somewhere between 5-10 miles. Financially I think we're better off because of the reduced petrol use, and other outgoings that have dropped. Takeaway consumption increased but other things seem to have balanced that out. We have a family project to go up a load of peak district peaks that are over 1000 feet. That's fun.
  12. What Have You Bought?

The T2 comparison video reminded me of this article. https://web.archive.org/web/20150129182822/https://priceonomics.com/why-every-movie-looks-sort-of-orange-and-blue/ Once you've read it, you'll see it everywhere.
  13. What Have You Bought?

My purchase is less luxurious than yours @nightwolf. Over 10 grand so far. :-( Our stupid soil (which was basically like top soil for 6 feet down) meant paying out a lot of extra money for concrete to fill super deep footings. So that was cool.
  14. What Have You Bought?

Very nice. I'm working on the table where we eat dinner, so I'm packing away everything at the end of the day, and setting up again at the start of each day. My disconnect from work to home is pretty good because of that though.
  15. Wow, I was being serious. Just shows that 1. I should check cast listings on IMDB before making dumb comments 2. I'm stupid.
  16. What Have You Bought?

Upgrading my WFH life over time: I have my eye on a spectacular mechanical keyboard, but not pulled the trigger yet because our house extension is mid-build and I don't want to spend money that I may need if things go over budget. :-(
  17. bad stuff thread.

I think I'm going to bear it for the few days that it's hot now, and buy one when stock levels are back to normal later in the year. I get the feeling I'd be getting a bit ripped off. This is the only thing that's made me miss the office so far. 🙂
  18. bad stuff thread.

There are five houses on our road and the middle one has an aircon device installed on the outside of her house - so I guess she has corresponding internal units. Last night I noticed that all the houses on our road had their windows all flung open. All except for smug Sue. I was feeling some serious envy, so your post on portable units was timely, after I was looking into them a bit in bed last night.
  19. bad stuff thread.

That does help. Does it just do one room? What's the BTU of yours? Got a link to somewhere we could buy your model?
  20. Post your Cooking!

Does cranberry sauce go with bacon? It's great in a brie and ham sandwich, but bacon is a different kettle of fish.
  21. I read all the twilight books and then I read the early leaked version of this but I don't think I'll subject my self to the full 750 pages. To me the books were very moreish, but the whole time I was reading them it was obvious they were trash as well.
  22. General Movie Thread

I re-watched Groundhog Day recently and it's almost painful to see this. I understand that you can't stop other people from copying an idea, but "waking up everyday in the same place no matter what you do the day before" is kinda like someone making a film about "rich person builds a dinosaur park with DNA from mosquitos and it all goes wrong for a group of visitors". Shameful. I'll probably watch it, and love it.
  23. Skin Colour, Races and Racism

Two set aside offices that are described like this: o Multi-Faith room now available (4th floor opposite B----, Sh----- & B----- meeting rooms) o Quiet room now available (next to the Multi-Faith room) specifically for those who need a temporary sanctuary for their personal wellbeing. I'm also not sure how to navigate this (does using it make me more supportive, even though it's not something that ever affects me) but it's optional so I've just held off for now.
  24. Who are you?

Thanks to all of us, @Ashley. Don't be selfish.
