  1. So it looks like it’ll work in the same way as Rocket League seasons, with some free stuff getting unlocked as you progress, but quicker progression and more rewards for those that purchase the pass.

I’m still only about halfway through the Tall Tales (and have been super distracted with DQXI :hehe:) but definitely want to try and get back into this a bit while I’m resubscribed to Game Pass.

  2. A few metal slimes later and the credits have rolled :hehe::

The final battles were epic! :o Had some seriously close calls on the last one. :D

And it looks like it's not even really over yet.

    What a game! :)

Despite my progress, one of my Facebook friends has told me there is still quite a bit of the game left which upon surpassing the 50 hour mark still seems mad to me. The following spoiler should be avoided if you are before the second act, not sure how far into the second act I am so unless you are near the end of the second act I hazard a guess then don't click the spoiler.

      Story progress (Reveal hidden contents)

I have reunited with all the party members after the Worlds Fall...Well almost everyone. RIP Veronica, my favourite girl. TTATT

I will soldier on despite how much the reveal affected me, I owe it to myself to finish it at this point. I have found myself actually using the tactics menu with these later bosses in the story, since they have some annoying attacks that have caused me to get the odd Game Over.

I reached that part earlier on today, such a sad scene.

I'm now at 38 hours played and have arrived at what I'd assume to be final area (were it not for everyone saying how long the game is :blank:), but Hero is only Lv. 42 and the very first encounter at that location saw my team getting absolutely obliterated! :o Just gave it a second attempt but was killed even quicker than the first! I've avoided it for most of the game, but definitely going to have to do some grinding now I reckon.

Anyone know the best location for metal slimes? :hehe:

It must be hard to design banners these days when you have to make them 20,000 pixels wide and roughly 5 pixels tall.

Yeah, that certainly doesn’t help matters. :hehe:

I do miss the days of the forum sharing the exact same layout as the main site one.

Did anyone ever play this? :blank:

I take it that's a no then. :heh:

Getting the impression this game must have bombed quite spectacularly on Switch, in that case it's no wonder they want to release it on other platforms.

Does that header not show up on mobile or has it not went live yet?

There might be a slight delay before it shows up, yeah. It's not showing on the main site just yet either.

Also, just because your name is RedShell doesn't mean you can just change things to the colour red as you please. I demand a vote on such things!

Hehehe! Like I said, that particular change was done by Ashley. And it was a good one, because some silly person *cough* didn't actually realise that the logo would be pretty much invisible on that header otherwise. :heh:

It's been a while since I made one of these, that's my excuse anyway.

Will it be long before I get the other characters back?

Ok, having progressed a bit more I’m now really glad nobody answered that question. ;) Yeah, that was actually very cool how you got to play as the different characters individually for a while, each mini-chapter was pretty unique too.  I was definitely not expecting to play as a fish either!

Not sure how much of the game is left, but even at this point I think I can safely say that DQXI has overtaken Ni No Kuni to become my new fave JRPG. It’s just superb in every way. :)

Only kicker was the music I guess - specifically it's repetition, dependence on older OST's and sound quality in the original release - but as someone who hadn't played a DQ game before this one, I didn't have too much to complain about in that regard, because it was all new to me!

Yeah, I’ve definitely noticed the repetition but the tunes are great and so catchy that I can’t say I mind. I’ve been humming a lot of them  recently too which is always a good indicator of catchiness. :D

Interesting how this was your very first DQ game (what an entry to the series!), I’ve not played that many myself to be honest, just IX, Heroes and Builders. And two of those were spinoffs, so I guess you could say this is only the second DQ game I’ve played. :hehe:

One thing is for certain though, I sure as hell won’t be overlooking this series again!

See, I played through the entirety of DQ XI in 2D mode and my plan for when I have little to play is to replay it again entirely in 3D mode.

Even without voice acting and SNES style sprites doing the action, I very much enjoyed the story. It'll be interesting to see how 3D changes things. I have high hope for the voice acting considering how good the DQ VIII 3DS port was in that regard.

Wow. I’ve not used the 2D option at all. :blank: There was one part where I was forced to play in 2D briefly, but other than that it’s been 3D all the way.

The retro look is a nice additional option to have I guess, but with just how much work has gone into the 3D presentation, it sort of feels like it’d be a waste to play the entire game like that. :hmm:

Anyway, you’re in for a treat with the voice acting if you do replay it in 3D, as the English dub is indeed fantastic. :)

  9. DLSS is fantastic. Wasn’t clued up to it before getting back into PC gaming last year, but have used it on several games since then and yeah, it’s great stuff. Nintendo would be very wise to make use of it in either a Switch Pro or their next system. ;)

  10. Played this A LOT over the weekend, too much actually. Yeah, collected all of the orbs and...

...activated the Smash Bros. Ultimate stage :heh: to reach the giant floating tree. Was not expecting what happened next though! The “Master Sword” has been stolen! :o That was an amazing cutscene BTW.  Now it would seem that I’m stuck playing as overly flamboyant jester though, which is annoying as he was relegated to the standby team for the majority of my playtime and therefore has very crappy gear. :shakehead

I did make a separate save file right after the tree shenanigans though, so I suppose I could just reload and give him some decent stuff. Or would that be considered cheating? :hehe: Will it be long before I get the other characters back? It almost feels like starting the game from scratch at the moment, which is pretty cool considering what has happened in the story, but at the same time kinda sucks. :hmm:

But yeah, have really loved everything that has happened up to this point, the scenarios and characters in this game are just wonderful! And man, do these devs have a knack for creating attractive female characters! ;) Bunny girls, mermaids, even a curvaceous witch! Also, LOL at Scottish grandad having a dirty mag on him, that scene had me in stitches!  “Teh articles!!”

I’d have made even more progress if it wasn’t for the casino! Must have spent a good couple of hours playing the slime slot machines in there. Addictive doesn’t even begin to describe it. :D

Anyway, thanks once again to everyone that recommended this game to me over in the Game Pass thread, you guys picked an absolute winner! :peace:

  11. Well, despite my "ungrindiness" :heh: I've been making pretty good progress in this. Only hit a couple of roadblocks so far, the first one was getting paired with a guy who had his eyes closed (and was also off his face) for a fighting tournament. He kept messing up my tactics of using the sleep spell to prevent the opponents using their pep team attack. :indeed: Every time I'd get one of them sleeping, the dickhead would attack and wake them up again! :D Managed to get through it though, eventually.

The second sticking point was that guy's drug dealer, a giant spider. :hehe: Actually had to do a bit of grinding to get past that thing! Luckily those good old Metal Slimes were conveniently hanging around in the same area though, so it didn't take very long. ;)

So yeah, I'm finally in possession of the glowy tree branch thing and now have to find 6 orbs, which very quickly became 4 orbs, as the guy that stole Goemon's hair had 1 and Scottish grandad had another. Got a feeling I might only need to find 2 more actually, as I'm pretty sure another one of my new party members might have a couple stashed inside her top. Perhaps she'll offer me a Puff-Puff at some point.

Anyway, I'm definitely enjoying this game. Not sure if it'll dethrone my current favourite JRPG of all time (Ni No Kuni), but it's certainly got a very good chance. :)

  12. Hell of an unlucky yet hilarious moment on this earlier on. Got a Super Horn Frenzy and must have set off over 30 Super Horns during that time, then at the exact moment the frenzy ran out I was hit by a Spiny Shell! Shame this doesn’t save replays.

Another great music track has been added with the latest tour BTW:

The real world courses are actually pretty bland, but at least they usually have good music. Well, apart from London, I wasn’t really a fan of that one. :blank:

  13. Started playing this today and got serious deja vu! Was pretty confused for a sec, but then remembered playing the demo version on Switch! :heh:

Anyway, wow the English dub is just sublime! DQ Heroes was also amazing for that, all of the different accents and slang :D it’s such great stuff.
    And man, Gemma’s voice...

I see there was talk in here of a visual downgrade or something, but it looks pretty nice to me. Kinda low poly, but everything is super colourful and more importantly it runs incredibly smoothly.

Only thing I’m not keen on so far is the save system and how it’s possible to lose a chunk of progress if you’re caught off guard and cark it, which has happened to me a few times already.
Yeah... I probably shouldn’t avoid so many battles, but find running away from the monsters really entertaining for some reason!

  14. I just want to see new stuff from them. At the moment it feels like they've essentially abandoned their most loyal customers, everyone that supported the Wii U. Not saying that they were wrong to port all that stuff to Switch, I mean we're talking about some fantastic games that absolutely deserved a second chance, but it shouldn't have been done at the expense of original content for those of us that have seen it all before. :blank:

Also, it seems like the merging of Nintendo's handheld and home console divisions has had little to no positive impact on development or software output whatsoever! And this I simply cannot comprehend, how is it possible to actually be less productive when you unify all of your resources but only have a single platform to provide content for!? Why are we not really seeing any benefits from the entirety of Nintendo's teams focused 100% on Switch? ::shrug: The Wii U ports and mobile titles (most of which is probably outsourced) surely can't be responsible for such a lack of new content. :hmm:

As for what I'd personally like to see from Nintendo in 2021, or you know... ever :D:

    • An original WarioWare game. Or D.I.Y. 2, that would be a dream come true for me.
    • A new entry in the now criminally overlooked F-Zero series.
    • New Pilotwings, Nintendogs, Wii Sports/Music, Rhythm Tengoku, Advance Wars...
    • Do something creative with StarFox. It's a great IP but I feel it needs a new direction.
    • More content added to MK8DX, or better yet a brand new MK game. They didn't even add LABO VR support to it, which is bonkers.
    • Much more content added to Mario Tennis Aces! That was (and still is) basically half a game. :shakehead
    • Update Animal Crossing to bring in some much needed QoL improvements.
    • Additional styles/mechanics for SMM2, not sure why they've ended support for this so soon. If a new "Maker" title is on the way then fine, a Zelda Maker would be fantastic.
    • Add a character that I actually like to Smash Ultimate. Kiryu, Ulala, Tingle... you know the drill. :heh:
    • Way more incentives/rewards for Switch Online members. More retro systems/games added to the service, and more stuff like Tetris 99, Mario 35 etc.
    • Make something quirky and unexpected again, like Rupeeland or Tomodachi Collection.
    • Do more with My Nintendo. Try to bring something like the Stars Catalogue back.
    • Create a messaging and social feature/app for the Switch. Either something standard or something more Nintendo-y like Letterbox, Miiverse or Miitomo.
    • Enable Joy-Con deadzone customisation in the Switch system settings to help with the drift situation.
    • Have a change in attitude to eShop sales and be a bit more generous with discounts, particularly concerning older titles.
    • Get Zelda BotW 2 released.

So...is this the MH I finally change my main weapon? Any other series stalwarts thinking of doing the same to freshen things up?

Wasn't planning to, but having now spent some time with the Insect Glaive I'm thinking I will! :o

Messed about with that weapon type briefly in a previous MH game and hated it, but in Rise I'm kind of loving it. :D Reckon it'll take me quite some time to master (especially after spending so much time using the hammer) but combined with Wirebugs you can basically fly with this thing! It also has a very neat trick up it's sleeve that feels like it'll be particularly useful in this version of MH:

Going to fire up MH World in a bit, take it for a spin on that. :)

  17. My first completed games of 2021:

    1. Tetris Effect: Connected
    2. Doom Eternal

Tetris Effect was cool, I really liked how well it blends your gameplay with the visuals and audio. Lots of variation with all of the different themes as well, although a few of the vocal ones were slightly too cheesy for me. :shakehead The co-op multiplayer mode is genius though, that moment when each player's individual screens connect and you can then momentarily work together across the entire puzzle... epic stuff!

As for Doom Eternal, well I was definitely impressed with the presentation (something I wasn't really expecting, coming off Cyberpunk 2077), it looks amazing! :o Super well crafted and everything is so crisp, not a single dodgy texture in sight. But as for the game itself, while it was enjoyable at first, the longer it went on, the less fun it became. :hmm:

I think I just got tired of the extreme and relentless pace of it, there's basically no downtime at all. It was exhilarating initially, but the later levels started to take the piss, they basically throw multiples of every enemy type at you all at once, at which point it just becomes a complete and utter clusterfuck! I get that it's supposed to be overwhelming so that you feel like a badass after finally defeating all the demons, but it's absolutely ridiculous at times. :heh:

Also, I wasn't a fan of the "platforming" at all. Lost count of how many times I fell to my DOOM (sorry ) as a result of the flaky climbing/jumping mechanics. Oh, and the online multiplayer isn't my cup of tea either. Was expecting it to be like the 2016 version, but instead it's this weird 2 demons vs 1 slayer malarkey. :blank:

Anyway, still glad I finally got to check it out, but yeah, also happy that it was via Game Pass and I certainly never want to play it again! :hehe:
