  1. Rumor: Nintendo started talking with third-parties about NX at E3, positive reception

A report coming from Fortune claims that Nintendo “just started talking” about the NX with third-parties at E3 2015. The site goes on to say that the reception “was positive” based on what was heard from insiders.

    Here’s the relevant excerpt:

The problem for Nintendo is the NX’s launch is at least a year away—likely more, as the company reportedly just started talking about it with third party partners at this year’s E3. (The reception, say insiders, was positive.)

Even assuming Fortune’s report is accurate, don’t expect to hear about NX anytime soon. Nintendo has said that the system will not be unveiled until next year.

This is what I was saying about using Splatoon as a beacon of positivity to help with third party relations at E3.

  2. Miyamoto Says He’s Taken A Step Back From Nintendo’s Hardware Design, More Focused On Software

Nintendo’s renowned video game designer Shigeru Miyamoto has said he’s taking a step back from hardware design to focus more heavily on software development. In a recent interview with Fortune, the Mario creator stated that he’s no longer “actively participating and making decisions” when it comes to Nintendo’s current hardware development, including the NX. It’s, perhaps, a bold move for Miyamoto to make, though, as we heard earlier this week, he’s hoping the NX will be Nintendo’s next big hit after blaming the Wii U’s floundering performance on tablet progression and the console’s high price.

“I’ve pulled myself back out of some of the hardware section and I’m really focused on some of the software that I’m involved in—for example, the new Starfox game. Of course I am observing and looking at the hardware, but I am not actively participating and making decisions.”

Nintendo continues to be secretive when it comes to the NX due to fear of competitors potentially poaching their ideas. However, the company is currently in new talks with third parties regarding the upcoming hardware and, as Fortune alludes, reception appears to be positive. Nintendo’s software planning and development division general manager Shinya Takahashi referred to capturing the attention of gaming fans once again with Nintendo’s next home console.

“For us, the next step is to think about what is going to be that element that is really going to catch the attention of a large number of players again and get them excited. We’re constantly thinking about this idea from the perspective of the players and the needs of the players in terms of what can we can do with our ability and our technology to capture that excitement and passion.”

  3. Star Fox Command and Mario & Luigi: Partners In Time are coming to the Wii U Virtual Console. They're both DS games. Don't know anything about SFC personally, only that I've heard bad things. Mario & Luigi: Partners In Time, however, I do know about as I've played it and it's a fantastic game. It's a definite must buy if you've never experienced it.

  4. Nintendo UK Has Removed Blurb About Super Mario Maker’s 100 Levels On Their Website

    super_mario_maker_100_levels_blurb.png

We found out earlier this week via the official Nintendo UK Super Mario Maker website that the game will feature 100 levels pre-installed on the disc for gamers to play through if they are not feeling particularly creative. Interestingly Nintendo UK has removed this reference from the official website and we are not entirely sure why as it is a major selling point. The only thing I can think of is that they were saving the information for a Nintendo Direct nearer release.

  5. Are all your amiibos looking well? I was in Smyths today and the new waves are of a much, much higher quality. But I noticed the painting on some of the figures is far from perfect. I noticed the row of gold spots on Ganondorf's shoulders on a few figures were badly done. Dark Pit had paint spilling past where it should stop. And it wasn't just them. Zero Suit Samus as well. I noticed defects on quite a few amiibo. Are ye happy with what's delivered? If I see that in one shop, ye must be seeing it too? I know it's intricate painting but blemishes like that would bother me. They do look nice though and even better when perfect. Not a Yarn Yoshi was in sight in any shop. :(

  6. Gamestop is riddled with copies of FIFA13 and Mass Effect 3 for €40 each going nowhere fast. Argos have both titles for €5.50 and €8 respectively. HMV have no copies of any good popular 1st party titles. Just MK8 for €55 secondhand and other titles like Black Ops II. Both shops Wii U sections are pitiful.

Smyths was so much better. They had the Wii U setup with MK8 and 2 Wii remotes a good choice of games. They had Splatoon and Yoshi's Woolly World. HMV had neither. The new 3DS playing Smash Bros. And yes I agree the 3D is so much better. They had a proper amiibo section with a good few to choose from. While the new amiibo look miles better, I have something to say about them but I'll save that for the grievances thread.

  7. Just got back from Dublin city centre with my Yoshi&amiibo bundle. I'll make a start on it later, wrecked trawling the shops. Not a bargain anywhere. There's little left for me to buy on Wii U. HMV, hurry up and die...again. Nunchuks, €40. Secondhand copies of MK8, €55. Gamestop, equally appalling prices.

  8. I think it's going to be a clean slate. That's why I think the DS name could be dropped. So there's no confusion and to help reinforce than the 2 devices are interconnected and share common features they'll have names like e.g. NX Home and NX Portable.

  9. I'm getting too many disconnects for my liking. I see it's a topic of discussion on other forums. Maybe the servers are being stretched as more and more people play it.

  10. Miyamoto says there won't be content locked away in this game.

Shigeru Miyamoto Has Good News For Amiibo Skeptics Like Me

I’m optimistic about many things in gaming, but I’m a confirmed Amiibo skeptic. I fear the day a Zelda dungeon or Smash Bros. character is locked out for those who didn’t purchase the right $13 Amiibo figure. Well, at least I don’t need to fret about the new Star Fox’s use of Amiibos.

“In terms of what I’m doing with Star Fox, I’m really not thinking about there being locked content or there being a mode that you won’t be able to play if you don’t have one,” Shigeru Miyamoto, Nintendo’s top game designer, told me last week at E3.

I’d just been telling him about my Amiibo concerns, concerns I’d expressed in an article last May. I see Nintendo selling millions of Amiibo and then tying Amiibo to various content unlocks in games—special challenge map variations in Splatoon, or a cool weapon in Hyrule Warriors, for example—and I wonder just how far Nintendo will go in terms of treating Amiibo as $13 keys for unlocking content on a disc. Physical DLC, as it were.

What I knew before talking through this with Miyamoto is that this fall’s Star Fox Zero for the Wii U will connect at least with the existing Fox McCloud Amiibo and the forthcoming Falco one. It’s logical, in that both characters who are featured in Smash Bros. and are therefore destined to have Amiibo to fill out the Smash Amiibo line-up are major characters in Star Fox.

That led to this exchange, with Miyamoto’s answers provided via a translator:

Totilo: “Mr. Miyamoto... I’m not the biggest fan of the Amiibos. I know a lot of people like them. But I really like the way you guys design games. Ever since you started releasing the Amiibos and connecting some bonus content to them, I began to wonder if that was going to contort the values you have when you design games, that you were going to lock stuff off. Unless I paid extra for an Amiibo I wouldn’t get it. I’m wondering if on Star Fox or anything else you have any guiding principles that affect what you would allow to have locked off by an Amiibo and what you wouldn’t.”

Miyamoto: “In terms of being able to unlock content, I don’t really want to go down that path. For this game, I think of it more as, for people who have the Amiibo, they’re going to get a little something extra and that’s how I’m planning on it with this game. So rather than actual abilities or things like that changing in the game, it would be like getting a different skin for the Arwing or something like that.”

Totilo: “The reason I ask is because I see a game like Splatoon, which I’ve been enjoying, I notice that if I use the Amiibo I get challenges that I wouldn’t otherwise get. I think, ‘Well, if I just had the game, and I didn’t have the Amiibo, I feel like I would be missing out on things.’ And I noticed in the Yoshi game, Woolly World, if I have an Amiibo I get an extra mode or ability that I otherwise wouldn’t get. I think, ‘Oh, Nintendo wants me to buy these Amiibos, so are they going to put really enticing things in these Amiibos that I can’t get.’ How do you draw the line to make sure it is not tempting you to lock really cool stuff off?”

Miyamoto: “So, I don’t really want to talk about Nintendo in general today, but in terms of what I’m doing with Star Fox, I’m really not thinking about there being locked content or there being a mode that you won’t be able to play if you don’t have one. Since we already have the existing Smash Bros. Amiibos I basically want to put in something so if you already have those Amiibos, I imagine people will try and tap them on Star Fox anyway, and I want to make sure there is something that gives them a nice charge when they do that.”

  11. When it comes to Yoshi, I just think that they know that it will sell well, especially with the amiibo, so they are not trying to advertise it, but they are happy with the numbers they will get anyway (I think that they could increase it with more advertising, but.....).

I don't know why they are not doing it with Devils Third, but maybe it's to violent for them and they don't want to advertise it a lot.

From the brief description on Nintendo's website.

    Devil in the Details

A Wii U exclusive third-person shooter/combat game arrives from the creative mind of legendary designer Tomonobu Itagaki.

    • Devil’s Third is an over-the-top, third-person action shooter that combines modern military weaponry with ninja-style swordplay and melee combat.
    • The game has a unique vision for a deep and challenging online mode that blends clan-based action, resource management and strategy.

    http://www.nintendo.com/games/detail/_HvDpYyz5qD2kAKuSCj62VmKyYV3RKP1

The biggest focus of this game is online. What's the point of buying an exclusive if you just send it out to die? Nintendo have advertised mature titles in the past. It's supposed to be out in a couple of months and has had very little exposure.

  12. I was thinking about Splatoon and how Nintendo advertised this game and not others like Bayonetta 2 or The Wonderful 101. I bet Devils Third doesn't get any advertising nor have I seen any ads for Yoshi's Woolly World released today. Could it have anything to do with the NX? I know it's a new franchise and Nintendo want to get it established but look at when it released. It released right before E3, it released before it was fully ready but Nintendo may be using it as an example to get support for the NX. Its sales certainly wouldn't hurt its chances. I mean like they really pushed Splatoon. Other games got absolutely zero support or advertising. Sales of 1 million in less than a month, a new ip that came from nowhere showing that with the right leverage third party games could have similar succes on the NX. You know Nintendo had to have been trying to do deals behind the scenes at E3 and I bet Splatoon was mentioned. If they went into E3 using sales of Kirby and the Rainbow Paintbrush, MP10, Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker or Mario vs Donkey: Tipping Stars as examples of great success, it wouldn't impress 3rd parties. But Splatoon does and you need a showpiece to sell your wares.

Splatoon's advertising has been a blip on what otherwise is a flatline this year.

  13. I think analogue triggers will be back next generation. I've said it before but if Nintendo don't publicly disclose the specs by launch you can be sure it's a weak system. They did that with the Wii and Wii U. I won't believe a word they say, I'll rely on Nintendo websites for information and Digital Foundry to tell the truth. There'll be no Wii branding anywhere near its name. It's toxic. The DS brand too could die.

  14. So as some of ye may know I wanted the blue Yarn Yoshi. Well they're gone everywhere. There was only a limited number left for retail this morning and they were all gone in an hour. Now the only alternative is Ebay and looking there it's anything from €40-55 with delivery. It's the day of their release. Is there no end to this supply issue? The people on Ebay clearly love them so much they're willing to sell them on day one for 3 times the asking price.

  15. We are prioritizing satisfying customers who purchased the Wii U.

    That was another notable quote.

I'm still laughing at question 9.

Shareholder: Sunrise, Sunset, Sunrise, Sunset, (sings faster) Cats and the cradle and the silver spoon. Yes, Nintendo has no bread. (starts sobbing)

    Iwata: Please understand!

Shareholder: No, it's not that, they have no bread. (runs away crying)

  16. Had the silly thought of buying the blue Yoshi when I'm collecting my Yoshi&amiibo bundle later. Then thinking if I buy them 2 then I may as well buy the pink 1 and complete the set. But then thinking about it logically, why would I do that? And that's €100. They do very little and I could buy another game with that money instead. Far more practical. I have the green Yoshi but would prefer the blue Yoshi. I'm not going to open the green Yoshi. It's bad enough buying one and supporting the scam.

Smyths have taken the money out of my account. But if I don't collect it in 2 days will they refund me? Should I support any amiibo? No, probably not but the Yarn Yoshi is cute. Then there's the cancelled thegamecollection order that was supposed to be refunded but never was and may actually arrive in the post today though they said it wouldn't. Should I just play the game and forget about Yarn Yoshi? So many questions. I might ring Smyths later. God, I hate amiibo. And yet here I am fretting over a piece of wool with an NFC chip shoved in its butt. If the game arrives, I could get the blue Yoshi separately but then I won't be here to know if it arrives. And there's no guarantee of getting a blue Yoshi and I'd have to be in the store first thing. F### this!

Now I check my bank account and thegamecollection have refunded me just there so is anything arriving? It's a mess.

Right, I guess I am going to Smyths so.

Or I could wait until tomorrow, see what arrives in todays post but then the blue Yoshi's will definitely be gone.

But I want to play the game today. What if the game arrives on Monday?
