Jumped in on this last week (patch + 20 quid on GoG seemed like a good time). This game is fucking lit!!! Feel like the general internet-deciding-it's-a mess has kind of displaced any chat of it being a bit of a corker - I'm on the bit in the hotel - just wandering around the bar area, listening in on conversations, admiring the incredible detail to costumes, character design, architecture, it's just.. on another level really. Obviously most of that's to do with what an insane budget it's clearly had but I can't remember the last game I played that has this much imagination and visual madness. I was apprehensive of the first person viewpoint but the immersion has been brilliant in places Still early doors but `iI haven't noticed a single issue or bug yet, probably 7 or 8 hours in, playing on PC with a 2060 super. Haven't really got my head around the combat yet which feels like it might be a bit of a weak spot - though I suspect I'm just a bit crap at it I really hope people wind up giving this a chance because you can feel the blood, sweat, and passion of the CJPR staffers across the game

A combination of being crazy busy with work and delays in getting anything shipped to me means I’ve been a bit behind on this. A few small things I’ve been working on: I now have all the parts to make a fully upgraded Game Gear. I have also had a machine delivered but I haven’t been able to get it running with the easy fixes. Need to get my hands on a few more to see if I can actually make this work. They seem to sell for decent money once done so I might make a few and see if I can make money with them. Upgraded my stock GBA SP from the grey buttons above to… One with black buttons. Not much of a change but I think it looks much nicer. Only weird thing is that the kit doesn’t come with a volume slider which means you have one old mismatched button. This is actually not the final form of the GBA I’m going for, I have something quite special on the way which I’m looking forward to creating the ultimate GBA with.

Why suffice when you can have something far more impressive? Neither of you have given a compelling reason why they should do a worse thing instead of a better thing.

Given that we’ve been trapped inside for the better part of a year and it doesn’t seem to be changing anytime soon I thought it would be a good time to pick up a new hobby. I’ve always had an interest console modding but never done any myself. I thought now might be the time to give it a go and see what I can do. I posted in the “What Have You Bought” thread that I’d recently picked up a few tools to get started and @Happenstance suggested I make a thread to document my progress, so here it is! I have a few projects in mind and will document my progress, any ideas or suggestions are very welcome! Project #1: My Japanese GameCube I bought this GameCube back when I lived in Japan and haven’t used it in years. Given the simple nature of the console and the quite nice quick work you can do on it I thought it would be a good place to start. I have a few plans for things to do with this. Mod #1: Region Switch The first mod is a simple one, a US/JP region switch. I don’t actually have any US games here but this is a simple enough project to get started with and very easy to test the success of. I’ve ordered a pack of switches and some cable and hope this one will be pretty easy to get done. Mod #2: Region Identifying Power LED Linked to Mod #1 is installing multiple LED lights such that the power light will be a different colour dependent on the region selected. This is a little trickier than the first but should be easy to test and not cause me too many issues. The LEDs I need for this have also been ordered Mod #3: Controller Port LEDs This is a little trickier than the first two as it will require some gaps be made in the existing body. The idea is to make the controller ports light up when the console is powered on. I need to acquire a glue gun to help with this one but otherwise everything is ready for it. Mod #4: HDMI Output Currently I have to use this mess of bad quality to get my GameCube on my TV: Luckily, the GameCube I have has got the digital output which means there is a kit available that will turn this into and HDMI port. It seems I have a few options on this one so will be doing a bit of investigation into the best way to do this before I take the plunge. Whatever I go with this will be a challenging mod. Mod #5: USB-C Power There are a few parts to this one. A couple of years ago I totally forgot about power differences and managed to blow up... something. I bought a new power supply so the first thing to do was test everything actually works: Great, I have a working GameCube! Being more sensible I now have a step-down transformer but my god does it take up a lot of space: It also weighs a ton. So that I can avoid all of this in the future and not worry about power issues I’ve found a USB-C power board that matches the GameCube power adapter output that I will attempt to install into the console. This one is completely self-created so I have no clue if it will actually work. Based on my research it should do, but it’s untested. So that’s the plan for my first project. Looking forward to getting started on it. Have any of you tried anything similar? Any thoughts or tips?

Yes, I read it too. I have some minor misgivings for now, but my opinion is the same as yours.

Cool glimpsing through your evolving feelings on this game @drahkon - I started this a couple years ago, liked what I played (particularly vibes-wise) but didn't stick with it as I found the first palace / combat a bit tedious / repetitive. Nice to see you pushed through and wound up loving it - I think i'll return to it one day!

I have the IPS screen ready to go, I’m waiting for this other thing before I use it though.

Likewise I needed to stock up and thought I'd try some new stuff (in part because my preferred flavours were out of stock):

I want to argue for Pokémon Mystery Dungeon's case, but it's only 5 entries long, so I don't think it can stand up to the likes of Castlevania. It's still super consistent with the high quality of the soundtracks. I love that Smash Ultimate gave Castlevania so much attention in the music department. It must have been a nightmare whittling down those songs to the selection we got.

BTW, this has nothing to do with anything we were talking about before, but I just started playing through Castlevania: Circle of the Moon again after listening to some of its music and HOT DAHYM does it have a great soundtrack! Special shout-out also goes to the amazing arrangement of Awake as heard in Super Smash Bros Ultimate though! I NEVER thought that we’d ever get to see any sort of love given to COTM, as oft forgotten as it is by Konami (and also IGA himself), but I was SO delighted when I saw Awake surface in SSBU! (Oh! And there’s that extra little addendum at the end in this arrangement too @Glen-i ) On a bit of a tangent, I think it’s safe to say that throughout all of video game history, Castlevania has the most consistently amazing soundtracks of any long running series. Even the absolute shittiest, most utterly awful Castlevania game has an AMAZING soundtrack to go along with it!

Look, I don't want to belittle the effort that went into this, because there was certainly effort, but it still doesn't make it more interesting than a remaster in my eyes. I've said it before and I'll say it again, graphics are the least important aspect of a game. I think that gets more and more true as we go further into console generations and the increases in graphical prowess get more and more miniscule. The fact is that by sticking so close to the original game, it's cemented itself as a remake that doesn't try to do anything new or interesting with the source material. And don't games as popular as the Souls series deserve better than being the same game, but prettier? Ironically, if a Last of Us remake were to happen and it just so happened to include mechanics from the sequel, then I'd have to concede that despite it still being way too soon, it at least tried to mix things up more than the Demon's Souls remake. And that's my issue with remakes like that. Yes, I'm well aware that I'm in the minority on this matter. A lot of gamers are perfectly content to have their remakes be purely visual upgrades and not much else. But that really shouldn't be good enough and no-one will change my mind on that.

Why suffice when you can have something far more impressive? Neither of you have given a compelling reason why they should do a worse thing instead of a better thing. Opportunity cost is one very big reason; the time and effort spent on a full graphical remake would be much better spent on a new game if you’re not going to make any meaningful changes/additions to the gameplay. Another reason is preservation of the original game. Why remake a game instead of just re-releasing the original? Why “delete” the original game from existence in favour of a new paint that doesn’t preserve the original game’s artistic intent? (SOTC is particularly guilty of this). Imagine if Nintendo keep remaking the original SMB each and every time they wanted to re-release it? Not only would it become garbled beyond any recognition of its original version, it would also have taken away significant resources from making new games.

This is where I stand as well. If you're gonna remake a game, do so in a way that offers something new to those who have already played the original. (Metroid: Zero Mission is another good one) It's kinda why I'm a bit apprehensive about the upcoming Pokémon Diamond/Pearl remakes. The previous 3 remakes (FireRed/LeafGreen to OmegaRuby/AlphaSapphire) take the familiar settings of older games and use the more modern mechanics and new Pokémon available to offer a different take on those games. But Brilliant Diamond/Shining Pearl are hinting that it's going to remain very faithful to the original as far as the mechanics go. If this is the case, I think it's a mistake. Most of the appeal of a Pokémon remake is experiencing a game with updated mechanics and a larger roster of Pokémon and moves to utilise.

Agreed. It’s not a very common approach for a remake to take with its soundtrack (even amongst those that might be considered full “Retellings”; like Metroid Zero Mission), but I do wish that more remakes would take a similar approach! It’s really great when it does happen! Actually, come to think of it... some games DO do this when they include rearrangements of music from previous entries in the series... The “Final Fantasy Prelude” is perhaps the best example that immediately springs to mind... You might be fooled into thinking that what you know as the “Prelude” has always been what it is, but you would be WRONG! Here is the original version... Here is Final Fantasy 3’s version... And HERE is Final Fantasy 4’s version; where the additional section that we know today was added... This isn’t that uncommon of an approach for a long running series to take with recurring themes, but it IS uncommon to see in a remake.

A few people in the media spotlight have died recently which of course gives some people on social media the right to say whatever hatred they have straight out. It doesn't matter if someone died less than an hour ago off they go spouting whatever on twitter, reddit or wherever. The Dalai Lama's right, anger shouldn't be welcome. It's a negative and destructive emotion that in the end leads...nowhere.

So did anyone else finish Attack on Titan the other day? I felt it ended well, brought about the story to a good close. Loved the series overall.

Actually, I'm playing that on the side. I had a feeling you'd mention that. Just recruited a robot called Adam. Which sounds cool, until I realised that he's 30 levels behind everyone else and can't hit any enemy for more than 1 damage. Completely useless at this point in the game.

I've been thinking about a certain kind of remix today. Mostly because I've started playing most of the console entries of the Wonder Boy series (I'm dubbing that the "Wonder Bender"). The kind of remix I'm thinking about is the remix that subverts expectations by adding a new section to an original track in some way. Whenever I think about this, Death Mountain in A Link Between Worlds comes to mind. Here's the original. A pretty great song. But the version that appears in it's 3DS version is one that I absolutely adore. You hear that? That little extra bit at 42 seconds? It's a small thing, but I think it really elevates the track while not sounding out of place. The way it flows into the last few notes of the song is just brilliant. Anyway, moving on to Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap, the game that got me thinking about this in the first place. Here's a song from the Master System version. Pretty catchy, huh? Nice beat to it. Here's the remake version. OK, it has to be mentioned, but taking that original version and making it sound absolutely melancholic in comparison is already pretty amazing, but that's not even the aspect I'm thinking about. At the 1:20 mark, just when you're thinking "Oh, it's looped, that was quick" the song takes a sudden swerve from melancholy to bombastic! It's such a powerful moment and it gives me goosebumps. Speaking of goosebumps, back to Zelda and the game that takes subversive remixes to the extreme, Link's Awakening. It's 51 seconds long, and while it does have some atmosphere to it (as atmospheric as the Game Boy can do, in reality), it can get really repetitive. Enter the Switch version. I mean, wow. What else is there to say? I might have spent 5 minutes standing still in the first room of that dungeon just to take it all in. Apart from 80% of the Link's Awakening Switch soundtrack, I have to say, I can't think of many other examples of this kind of thing. Which is a shame, because I think it's really powerful when done right.

I don't think Naughty Dog themselves pitched the idea. But the reason is pretty obvious. It's money. It normally is when it comes to games. Sony have themselves a smash hit in The Last of Us and they want to milk that cash cow as much as they can. It's the same reason why Nintendo are doing a straight-up sequel to Breath of the Wild, not to mention commissioning Koei Tecmo to make a Hyrule Warriors sequel that serves as a prequel to BotW. That said, it's not seen as blatantly greedy because at least fans will get a new game out of it and even a BotW sceptic like me got some fun out of it. Age of Calamity is legit fun. The difference with this is that a theoretical remake of such a recent game shouldn't cost nearly as much as most remakes. The Last of Us still holds up as far as it's production values go (I don't care for these kind of games, but that's besides the point). A remake wouldn't really bring that much to the table. It'd look as good as the second game while maybe bringing a few mechanics to it. But yeah, because it's so recent, there's not much that would feel different. You'll never get a remake that feels fresh out of it. You want remakes that do this well, just look at the likes of Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap. When this remake came out, the original game was 28 years old! And I legit think it's the gold standard for video game remakes. It's one of the most beautiful games I've ever played. (Seriously, seeing it in motion is something else) Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX is another good example. It's impossible to apply that kind of radical shift to The Last of Us, doesn't matter how good your development team is. It's far too soon. So yeah, big profit with relatively little effort is the reason for this.

Absolutely the right decision as far as I’m concerned. So long as you’re not really into Sony’s first party exclusives (save for MLB The Show ), going Xbox over Playstation this generation is a no brainer.

Well, a deal has been made A mate will buy my Switch. I bought it in 2019...It's only been 1 1/2 years. Aside from the myriad of roguelites and indie games I enjoyed, none of the exclusives made me think that the console was worth it...the only video game device that has given me buyer's remorse, which is a shame... I loved the N64 (even though I got it way after its time), GameCube and even the Wii... The WiiU was a horrible outlier but even that one had a few gems. For me, the Switch has a lackluster library of exclusives and bar Metroid Prime 4, there's nothing announced that interests me... I gotta say...I've fallen out of love with Nintendo and I doubt they can get me back anytime soon
