I think most of us on here can agree that Nintendo had a weak year in 2020 when it came to software output. Again, quite a few of us on here seem to drift away from the platform altogether and focus our gaming time elsewhere. Despite this, Nintendo managed to rake in the cash thanks to titles like Animal Crossing and evergreen games such as Mario Kart and BOTW. As a platform, the Switch has done nothing but go from strength to strength, at least in terms of sales. 2021 will hopefully bring some big hitters to the table, as well as a few surprises. Some of Nintendo's own franchises are celebrating anniversaries this year and Nintendo have proven that they aren't shy about dropping games out of the blue. What do you want from Nintendo and the Switch this year? Is there a particular game you are hoping to be announced or get released? For those who felt last year was a weak showing, what can be done differently this year? To anyone who fell away from the platform, what is needed in order for you to come back on board?

For me, its the little things considering I've been crazy bored out of my skull on furlough. So I've been playing a lot of Animal Crossing on the Switch and just recently found out you can make your own designs and stuff. I found a Beauty and the Beast flag and even a jumper that resembled the Beast's waistcoat in the ballroom scene. After posting how happy I was I found it,@BowserBasher said that he had a Noble Coat and very kindly sent it to me. I absolutely love it! I'm also loving Animal Crossing so much. Its helped me during this lockdown. Its sort of therapeutic.

The only game from 2020 I played was Atomicrops, which I reviewed for the site. The other two titles I reviewed were technically older (released on the Switch this year, but elsewhere earlier). So I'll stick to a list of Best Games I played in 2020, and I'll do it in descending order because that's how you read it. It's my list, okay?

This year the Pokémon brand is celebrating its 25th anniversary. I'm sure there will be plenty of news to share about this to warrant a topic of its own! I hope we will see some new games, but it would be nice to see some love for the older titles outside Red/Blue as well. The official anniversary website can be found here: https://25.pokemon.com/en-gb For now, a new overview video was posted which looks awfully cute: Next to that, Katy Perry is somehow involved:

Started playing this today and got serious deja vu! Was pretty confused for a sec, but then remembered playing the demo version on Switch! Anyway, wow the English dub is just sublime! DQ Heroes was also amazing for that, all of the different accents and slang it’s such great stuff. And man, Gemma’s voice... I see there was talk in here of a visual downgrade or something, but it looks pretty nice to me. Kinda low poly, but everything is super colourful and more importantly it runs incredibly smoothly. Only thing I’m not keen on so far is the save system and how it’s possible to lose a chunk of progress if you’re caught off guard and cark it, which has happened to me a few times already. Yeah... I probably shouldn’t avoid so many battles, but find running away from the monsters really entertaining for some reason!

I just want to see new stuff from them. At the moment it feels like they've essentially abandoned their most loyal customers, everyone that supported the Wii U. Not saying that they were wrong to port all that stuff to Switch, I mean we're talking about some fantastic games that absolutely deserved a second chance, but it shouldn't have been done at the expense of original content for those of us that have seen it all before. Also, it seems like the merging of Nintendo's handheld and home console divisions has had little to no positive impact on development or software output whatsoever! And this I simply cannot comprehend, how is it possible to actually be less productive when you unify all of your resources but only have a single platform to provide content for!? Why are we not really seeing any benefits from the entirety of Nintendo's teams focused 100% on Switch? The Wii U ports and mobile titles (most of which is probably outsourced) surely can't be responsible for such a lack of new content. As for what I'd personally like to see from Nintendo in 2021, or you know... ever : An original WarioWare game. Or D.I.Y. 2, that would be a dream come true for me. A new entry in the now criminally overlooked F-Zero series. New Pilotwings, Nintendogs, Wii Sports/Music, Rhythm Tengoku, Advance Wars... Do something creative with StarFox. It's a great IP but I feel it needs a new direction. More content added to MK8DX, or better yet a brand new MK game. They didn't even add LABO VR support to it, which is bonkers. Much more content added to Mario Tennis Aces! That was (and still is) basically half a game. Update Animal Crossing to bring in some much needed QoL improvements. Additional styles/mechanics for SMM2, not sure why they've ended support for this so soon. If a new "Maker" title is on the way then fine, a Zelda Maker would be fantastic. Add a character that I actually like to Smash Ultimate. Kiryu, Ulala, Tingle... you know the drill. Way more incentives/rewards for Switch Online members. More retro systems/games added to the service, and more stuff like Tetris 99, Mario 35 etc. Make something quirky and unexpected again, like Rupeeland or Tomodachi Collection. Do more with My Nintendo. Try to bring something like the Stars Catalogue back. Create a messaging and social feature/app for the Switch. Either something standard or something more Nintendo-y like Letterbox, Miiverse or Miitomo. Enable Joy-Con deadzone customisation in the Switch system settings to help with the drift situation. Have a change in attitude to eShop sales and be a bit more generous with discounts, particularly concerning older titles. Get Zelda BotW 2 released.

What do I want from Nintendo themselves? When I think about it, very little! There are plenty of Nintendo games I still don't have (Fire Emblem: Three Houses, Origami King, the Wii U ports, etc) and since my ownership of a Switch doesn't live or die by Breath of the Wild 2 or Metroid Prime 4, I'm in a good place with it going into 2021--in fact, I'm snowed under with games. Personally, I suppose it would be cool to have more updates in Mario Maker 2 (there is still space for another style!), it would be nice to have an Animal Crossing update that adds makes menu management and island renovations faster and easier, has the ship sailed on Odyssey and Super Mario Party DLC? Hmm, in fact, maybe they could ease off on the Mario output for a while to let us (me) play what is already there. A Nintendo RPG that isn't Mario or Xenoblade but something totally new? F-Zero with a story mode and galactic travel like a Mario Sports RPG mixed with a Star Fox Battle for Atlas? A new Super Tennis? Crazy asks. Perhaps Another Code is gone forever but what about a new Nintendo-made point-and-click style adventure game? What about Nintendo sending Camelot to assist the Sports Story indie dev? Ooh, wait, what about a follow-up to Mario & Rabbids. I do like the Rabbids. A Rabbids RPG with a job system. Imagine the chaos! Nintendo are far better at coming up with ideas than me, so I'm glad to leave it up to them and if none of what I said comes to fruition there will still be the eShop! Okay there is one thing I'd like as soon as possible: Joycons that don't drift. If they release a model with no drift (have they?) I'd be there day one. I never really played the Switch in portable mode anyway, but since the left joycon went out of whack over a year ago, I bought a pro controller and keep it docked now. It's just no fun to fight with it.

GamesRadar interview with Housemarque shines a bit more light on the game. Plenty more in the article itself, which I think is definitely worth a read. Count me even more intrigued by this game

@darksnowman there is definitely depth to the game. The demo is there to just ease players in and the charging in approach won't really work in the main game, especially in higher rank quests. Beasties end up packing quite a punch and so it's more about picking your moments and just trying to survive rather than going all in. In terms of tutorials, honestly it's probably best to just watch ones that get put on YouTube by Gajin Hunter or Akkrez (probably spelt that wrong). Both of these guys usually show you how to play using each weapon and often dish out tips and tricks that aren't really well known by the masses. The time remaining is usually on a clock at the top corner of the screen. In past games if you opened up the menu and checked the quest info you would get to see a proper countdown. Outside of special hunts, you should never really be in danger of running out of time. The game gives players a warning on the screen when they hit the final 5 minute mark.

Ready to make my first 2021 post! It's been a long time coming, but it's finally done. After 165 hours of recorded game time (but surely 200+ hours in practice), I finally finished: Fire Emblem: Three Houses I feel so attacked right now After months and months of slow progress, I finally beat my first (and hopefully the longest) campaign in this game. I've been intentionally exploring as many aspects of the game as I could (trying to master several classes, complete every paralogue that came my way, went for a few rare beasts, read the vast majority of the dialogue, saw every single support, etc.), hence the long playtime. For future playthroughs, I'll likely be much more efficient, even if I keep focusing on the plot. As a whole, I actually liked the different pace of the game, compared to other FEs. In Garreg Mach, we can talk to our units during peace time, read up the lore at any time, interact with other characters in smaller situations that make sense, influence character growth and supports a lot easier... On one hand, it becomes easy to exploit the best paths, but on the other hand, Maddening exists. Loved playing as the Golden Deer, and I definitely enjoyed soaking the world's lore from that perspective. In fact, I love how this game possesses such a thick lore, but rarely spells it details out loud. So many reveals weren't reveals at all, but left for the player to find or figure out for themselves (or even just talked about in a different route). Also, it's fair to say Claude is now one of my favourite lords in the series, and I now want a prequel starring his parents, Blazing Blade style. Plot-wise, there's a lot to dissect, but I'm overall very pleased. It's a bold choice to do a grey conflict like this again (being able to choose any of the sides), but they actually managed to do it very well, and I enjoyed the results. The worldbuilding is fascinating, and its conveyed in a subtle way that reminds me of Elibe, which as high a praise as you get from me. Even without the lore, the characters on their own easily carry the game. The writing and voice acting are easily on the same level of Shadows of Valentia, and that helps in creating a huge lovable cast you can easily get attached to. I also want to give a shout out to Tea Time, a surprisingly good "Date Simulator", even if I think it still needs some extra polish. Shamir, why do you keep hurting me with truth? Gameplay-wise, I like all the toys we're given. The gauntlets, the gambits, the monsters, the combat arts, the utility spells, the various Rallies, the versatility of picking your dancer... Lots of good stuff, once you understand how it all mixes together. My main complaint is that the endgame jobs are so weirdly implemented (Why does Mortal Savant feel worse than Swordmaster? Why aren't Assassin, Fortress Knight, and Paladin considered Master Classes? How am I supposed to build a Great Knight? Why the fuck are fist-leaning classes barred from women? Heck, why are the Dark Magic classes male-only, when only 3 people learn dark magic, and two of those are women?!), resulting in a system that feels far more rigid than it should be. The DLC classes help in this regard, but I do think they're patching an issue that shouldn't be there in the first place. (P.S.: I don't like Divine Pulse, and that's all I'll say) Map design was unimpressive. A lot of missions had cool ideas in a vacuum, but bizarrely designed maps (like, a lategame map has a treasure chest in a far away corner, surrounded by enemies. If you risk going there, you're rewarded with... a Brave Sword that you can buy in Garreg Mach. Why even?). I thought the most impressive thing about the second half of the game is that you're implicitly encouraged to spare enemies and finish missions super quickly (something that barely any FE game has convincingly done), but I can't help but feel that this was a fortunate accident. Presentation-wise, a lot of fun has been made of jpeg oranges. Rightfully so, they're hilarious. But overall, the graphics are more than serviceable, what matters is that the anime cutscenes look great, and the art style is expressive, memorable, and bright. Music-wise it's phenomenal, with some impeccable music choices in key moments, using a soundtrack that's gorgeous on its own (I had listened to Chasing Daybreak before, but hearing it in context is to experience it properly). I'm also personally proud that I managed to avoid hearing a single note of God-Shattering Star until I reached that battle myself. There are a few other flaws scattered throughout the game, though to avoid rambling (like with the job system above), I'll just say that there are a lot of rough edges in design and/or writing through the game still. It's normal for a game of this scope, and minor in the grand scheme of things. I'm only saying that, as much as I loved this game, I'm not blind to its flaws. tl;dr Narrative..........5/5 Characters.......5/5 Mechanics........4/5 Map Design......2/5 Graphics...........3/5 Music................5/5 Game Length.................................................../5 Overall, an ambitious (but still excellent) game that accomplishes most of what it wants to do. Can't ask for more. It might be in my personal Top 3 for the series, but it's hard to say right now. In the future, I'll play the Cindered Shadows missions (I bought the DLC some time ago), followed by a Crimson Flower run. Just not right now. After finally felling this juggernaut, I can be content with 2020. As for 2021, it feels like an open book right now. I want to do more of my physical backlog, but I'm also pondering a potentially fun way to help thin out my digital backlog... Hopefully I'll put it into practice this month.

At 00:03 today, I finished Donkey Kong 64 for the first time, with 101% completion and everything found. Incidentally, the single most frustrating part in terms of camera and platforming was in the first level, so a lot of the rest of the game was a lot more enjoyable.

You don’t wait until your console dies before putting out a successor. You strike while the iron is hot and keep the momentum going. This industry is entirely momentum driven. Once you lose momentum, it’s incredibly hard to get it back (Wii U is a great example; which was launched too late, after Wii was allowed to fizzle out without any major releases and Nintendo’s mindshare was lost. Even when the big Wii U releases came, it just couldn’t manage the release cadence of smaller titles needed to keep up a consistent schedule; thus the likes of Mario Kart 8 could only ever manage temporary hardware sales bumps). Switch 2 needs to launch before Switch 1 runs out of steam; and Nintendo’s internal developers HAVE to make the transition at some point. Better it happen now, while 3rd party support is strong enough to prop up the system in Nintendo’s absence; and while Switch is still healthy.
  34. 1 point
Switch 2 is probably coming out in March 2023 (6 years after the current Switch launched - No Nintendo home console has ever had a longer lifespan than 6 years, and I don’t see this changing here; especially with the inevitable loss of 3rd party support happening when cross gen games stop); that’s only 2 years away now! We’re pretty much almost there! (Hell, the announcement will probably be made in just around a year from now!) It really isn’t that far away now. I don’t see a point in wasting these games on the current hardware (which is selling like mad by itself, without any big new 1st party games even being needed), when they’d be much better spent on ensuring that the Switch 2 explodes out of the gate and becomes a success. So I’d rather see Nintendo pump out some good ports & localisations of older games on the current Switch and for them to push all their big new games onto the Switch 2 at this point.

The issue with launching a successor in four years time is that the sales of the OG Switch will have really fallen by then. Ideally they'd want to release a successor as Switch sales are still relatively strong as the newer console will target early adopters and not mass market at launch. I think in two years or so time makes most sense given the current pipeline for the chipsets available to them. Whilst they might not care about 'power', it's worth remembering that the Switch is pretty much the most powerful it could have been (they could have opted for weaker, cheaper hardware but they went for more power + higher price). I imagine the inevitable successor will be fully backwards compatible too, so in the short-term, the successor may not immediately replace the current Switch, but it just becomes the futureproof model. Agree with your other points in general though.

I don't really "want" anything as my active playing is down significantly lately so I'm not looking to engage with their products, but as a company it would be good to see them branch out into more new IPs. My problem with Nintendo consoles is they essentially go through a checklist of franchises to include and while the games themselves may become good it all becomes a bit unexciting for me personally as I know what to expect within the fiveish years of a console's life. I would welcome some improvements to the eShop navigation and keyboard next word thing but not huge problems, just nice to haves. And more Rick obviously.

I took a break from this to concentrate on Yakuza but with that now done, I once again started working my way towards the platinum trophy. I decided to tackle the Vs mode yesterday evening. I needed to reach the platinum rank (highest in the game) and beat 20 opponents. Man, the AI gets tough as you progress through the ranks. They throw all kinds of things at you, like enemies becoming invisible, notes going in wrong places and timings needing to be perfect. Some of these things come at you two at a time. There was a stage I was stuck on and I kept restarting it if I knew my score was too low. The AI had consistently been getting around the same score for about 10 turns now and I figured I needed to smash that number in order to win. It took a while but I finally managed to go above and beyond the score the AI was getting only to see that this one time the AI had also smashed his previous score...as well as mine! I was furious. I felt really robbed. I took a break and when I came back I did eventually reach the platinum rank. It did prove though that there was a lot of luck when it came to the Vs mode, especially with the power ups you recieved and got dished out at you. I'm still not even sure if I can achieve the platinum trophy on this. Completing 50 songs on Proud difficulty without missing a note is going to be VERY tough for me.

Seemed to sneak under the radar a bit with the Indiana Jones news today, but the next-gen update for the game is up. Also, went back and read some of the thoughts I and others left when this first released, and having played Demon's Souls recently, I find it hilarious just how many of my issues with this game were clearly influenced by From's games. I hadn't played any at the time, but seriously: the lack of fast travel points to try to teach you the level layout? Falls flat because the levels are super bland by comparison (and lacks the awesome shortcuts). The enemies with their backs to you like @Hero-of-Time mentioned in one of his posts way back? Means absolutely nothing and comes across as buggy because of how harmless these enemy types are. Sounds like I'm ragging on the game (still love those last few hours where it gets more linear and focused, best part for me by far), but yeah, now I've played a Souls game this is absolutely a Souls-lite like so many more familiar with those games were saying at launch, and it just falls flat looking back trying too hard to be like those games rather than being its own thing. No-one is playing a Respawn-developed Star Wars game for anything but a good time, so the lack of fast travel just hurts the game because that's not what anyone was hoping for. Really hope they can get that right next time around!

I've been wearing a watch more recently, but the only watch I had was the fancy one my dad bought me for my 30th, which I'm really paranoid about catching on things. I was planning on getting a cheap Casio for those retro feels, but whilst looking for some things in my cupboards, I found my old watch from about 10-15 years ago. It wasn't working, but a new battery seems to have done the job. It's not fancy, but it works and I completely forgot it had a really good light, so that was a nice bonus.

My first completed games of 2021: Tetris Effect: Connected Doom Eternal Tetris Effect was cool, I really liked how well it blends your gameplay with the visuals and audio. Lots of variation with all of the different themes as well, although a few of the vocal ones were slightly too cheesy for me. The co-op multiplayer mode is genius though, that moment when each player's individual screens connect and you can then momentarily work together across the entire puzzle... epic stuff! As for Doom Eternal, well I was definitely impressed with the presentation (something I wasn't really expecting, coming off Cyberpunk 2077), it looks amazing! Super well crafted and everything is so crisp, not a single dodgy texture in sight. But as for the game itself, while it was enjoyable at first, the longer it went on, the less fun it became. I think I just got tired of the extreme and relentless pace of it, there's basically no downtime at all. It was exhilarating initially, but the later levels started to take the piss, they basically throw multiples of every enemy type at you all at once, at which point it just becomes a complete and utter clusterfuck! I get that it's supposed to be overwhelming so that you feel like a badass after finally defeating all the demons, but it's absolutely ridiculous at times. Also, I wasn't a fan of the "platforming" at all. Lost count of how many times I fell to my DOOM (sorry ) as a result of the flaky climbing/jumping mechanics. Oh, and the online multiplayer isn't my cup of tea either. Was expecting it to be like the 2016 version, but instead it's this weird 2 demons vs 1 slayer malarkey. Anyway, still glad I finally got to check it out, but yeah, also happy that it was via Game Pass and I certainly never want to play it again!

The 2021 AGDQ has now been and gone, and yet again raised a ridiculous amount of money (well over £2m)! I only caught a little this year, and pleased to see some of my very first games get a showing (e.g., Donald Duck Lucky Dime Caper). The videos are all up as usual, and already my mind was blown by the blindfolded Super Mario 64 run! Not only with the memorisation but the back-up strats to recognise when Mario had missed something, and I’m learning new things about that game all the time, such as the different sound effects where walls join. I’m beginning to change my opinion on the no-crowds too. While some games lose energy due to lack of reaction, at least you don’t get those late-night games where only a handful of people are left in the auditorium watching. The tech team for these events do a fantastic job!

In regards to your edit @Julius, I think part of the problem is a lot of people with YouTube channels are wanting to make a quick buck and instead of putting out meaningful content they sell their soul and start making click bait videos with stupid thumbnails. Its a weird one because on the one hand I don't blame people who are playing the algorithm game and churning out streams of content and top 10 videos left and right in order to get clicks. On the other hand I have for more respect and I'm more likely to watch something that isn't click bait but instead made with passion. I always go back to something like My Life In Gaming as an example of this. Truly passionate gamers who don't seem to put out videos for clicks but instead because they just enjoy talking about gaming. These are the kind of people I give my time to. I think Andre seems to have lost sight of what made GX so appealing to a lot of people and instead starting chasing the money. I think he can still salvage GX if he takes it back to what made them popular in the first place, as well as treating his staff with respect and paying them what they deserve, obviously.
